Executions Graded: Orochi

Finally done with the vanguards, and now it's time to move on to the assassins! I'm very excited to start with Orochi, he was my original main before I really got further into the world of For Honor. After looking over his executions, I was a bit surprised by a few outcomes, but I feel satisfied with this one. There was one execution though that I KNEW would get the grade it got...you'll see what I mean.

Shaolin? I know it’s technically a two-handed weapon, but it’s still one weapon. And yes I’m fully aware that the game classifies Shaolin as a Hybrid. Considering he literally has the Reflex stance and deflect, let’s all save ourselves sometime and just call him an assassin.

I can actually explain Tobasu a little bit,Raven. It's a ledging execution. The idea is that Orochi strikes their opponent then does a running jumpkick to knock them off a cliff or high ledge to actually kill them. Wouldn't be useful on ground level,but on high places like the Castle walls in breach or the ledges on citadel gate and overwatch are where it's actually meant to be used,in context.

I would agree about the intentional use of a ledge, but the grading is of course about a common battlefield. Not any specific area of a battlefield, just a plain old field. Likely flat area. Etc. But you're not wrong about the ledging lethality intention.

Fun fact, the "From Above" execution behaves a lil different if you do the execution from behind someone, when doing the execution from behind the Orochi will still climb upwards and slash down with the Katana, however it will not decapitate and will instead just slash down the back, just something that I noticed when doing this execution in matches against bots.

Edit: Final addendum, you're right, katanas are designed to be two-handed weapons, but they can still be very deadly one handed weapons. Musashi Miyamoto was an undefeated kensei known for dual-wielding katanas, granted the guy was just kind of cracked in general 😂 He beat this other swordsman in a duel using a boat oar that was only slightly longer than the other guy's odachi, lol

The “from above” execution actually has a different execution if you get a heavy from behind. Same animation but it doesn’t decapitate just hits the spine.

Okay so I'm an Orochi main (i picked up the game a few months ago and made some great friends) and as someone who is also a martial artist that studies Kenjutsu and iai, i absolutely agree with most of these. You've got a very well thought out grading rubric but the one thing i will personally disagree with is the sheathing process automatically getting all efficiency scores as a one. Specifically because you have the option of battoujutsu techniques. That's not to say it isn't fair at all but making it an automatic 1 is a bit too far. Take a look at the kata from muso shinden Ryu known as Junto, as it showcases an iai drawing guard to protect the head :) absolutely enjoy the content tho, keep up the great work, and i hope to see you getting to the two newest heroes, Ocelotl and Varangian Guard!

Stabbing is actually a very practical with a katana. The only problem is against a katana it is somewhat easily to parry for someone trained. But stabbing between te ribs, shoulders and neck is in kenjutsu en kendo kata used. Also one handed can be used to get more reach but the main downsides are that you sacrifice control (for iai draw and nito (two sword)) and force (by using your two hands for a lever movement). The force is can mainly be negated by strikes from above by using gravity and extremely good edge alignment.

6:51 This execution actually bugs me the most out of any other execution in the game. It would get a 1 on the realism scale for me for the one simple fact that when he slashes with the katana, it shows him decapitating his opponent. However, if you notice where the blade is afterwards, it's placed right at their waist. Even during the slash itself. Though you see the bright white slashing animation go through the head, if you follow the katana itself you can clearly see the Orochi slashing through the waist or lower torso. So it feels weird to see a decapitation despite the positioning of the katana. But that's just me haha

I completely expected those 2 executions to get a 100% because they are definitely some of the best executions in the game, lethal, fast, cool and I could see them working. I really don't like any of the other Orochi executions that much, but those two are completely worth getting by playing Orochi.

Neck snap definitely is one of my most hated for all the reasons stated. Hell, Orochi could've just spun and used centrifugal force like in Senkei to go for a decapitation while Warden has his head down after being struck in the leg.

Great video as usual and I didn't think the Orochi would have faired that well! I expected a lot worst. Also, out of curiosity, if you do decide to stab with the Katana, how deep would it actually go? Like, considering it's a slashing sword first and a thrusting sword second, I would assume it wouldn't go that deep anyway.

You can definitely stab with a katana, it's just more designed for slashing than stabbing compared to something like a longsword or a rapier. A katana made of decent steel wouldn't bend much while stabbing, unless you hit the bone.

So in response to the thigh not being a lethal spot, there are major vascular structures in the thigh/groin area known as the femoral triangle, damage to the femoral artery in particular can cause massive hemorrhaging and death from blood loss in less than five minutes. Not disagreeing with the score on the execution, just offering a piece of information

As a swordsman i want to comment on the ending of kneel to me, the little flick back into guard could be done faster but i really like it as its important to go back to neutral stance quickly after strikes. I dislike many of them because the strikes are way too wide and leave you open to attack, but this one goes back into neutral guard fairly quickly.

I honestly love tobasu because of its non-lethality, i like to have at least one non-lethal exe on every hero, not only is tobasu not lethal but it also gives a lot of health very quickly. I like :)

Here's how I'd fix the neck break animation: Flip the katana so it cuts into his neck instead of their arm. Have them stand on his leg to help pin him down, and actually wrenching his head up and clockwise while slicing into the throat for good measure.

With Senbazuru that could have hit the femoral artery, which could be pretty lethal. Nothing near the jugular or carotid artery, but still will result in blood loss within minutes. It looked like it could've been deep enough to sever at least one if not the artery in both legs.

I feel like the Neck Snap execution gets a little too much hate. The animation is a little weird but the concept behind it is sensical. The neck is meant to be broken given the sound and head movement. But maybe the breaking was more of just the pressure of strangulation and cracking the neck as a result. We do see the Orochi kind of yank back a bit when the break sound occurs. But my main point is especially regarding how fights between armored samurai usually ended and the nature of armored warriors, finishing your opponent with a grapple and using your sword to aid that grapple and make it easy is a pretty common idea. As you said for the “you’re not using the weapon the way it was meant to be used” well a katana wasn’t meant to cut through armor either but here we are. Using it to aid a grapple to finish off a particular well armored opponent isn’t the worst idea.

...yeah because that's what I do with a sword: choke people out with it and break their neck. And going to the "well a katana wasn't meant to cut through armor either," boy that is weak. Of course katana's can't cut through armor, but as I've said numerous times, I do not take armor into account when doing this series, so that's a non-point. In fact, let's take that an run with it: if katana in this game are capable of cutting through armor, and we're treating that as legit, then why choke him out at all? There's no point. Just cut him. He's capable. As for the grappling bit, yes, samurai did grapple. But this is not a grapple. He struck the dudes legs out from under him then choked him. There were numerous other options at his disposal.

With half of Orochis decaps you can just see that it would work because it looks like hes just slicing over the neck. You can already see how litle impact it would have just visualy but they wanted to give him one anyway because Katana sharp. Same for PK tho she barely ever has aenough leverage behind those tiny swords to actually cut the spine.

I bring this up all the time on The Subreddit. Warden's armour is actual dogshit, especially talking about Larry's. A halfassed coat if plates that don't properly protect his chest, single heartplate, patches of chainmail in neck, armpits and a modestly strip of the stuff (shows that he doesn't have a full haubrek) yet super expensive articulated gauntlets, semi decent couters and spaulders that float up off his shoulders... His major upside is his Barbuta, better style helm in this game, would provide some good protection to your head and it has an avental to protect the neck , we can assume a coif... The basic warden just has tons of issues

Katana have alot of reverse grip attacks and uses in kendo, ido, and other styles. Mostly used for extremely close quarters attacks/defenses. Theres one where if you sre sitting down you draw the blade in reverse for a good defense across your body. From thete you can go into a stab if they are close or move away and swap to a more traditional grip. Its not used often but yes, there are ways to effectivly use teverse grip

Following you Categories and grading, This is how I understood the grading. Let's take lethality as an example: 4: Will absolutely kill; 3: Potential chance of survival; 2: 50/50 it would kill, highly doubtful; 1: Will not kill; IMO, you're being a bit too lenient with the grading, just in the 1st execution, you explained thoroughly how both the slash and Kunai would likely not be lethal but then gave it a 3.

Wanted to correct something I've seen you say multiple times, but the heart is not in the center of the chest, and you repeatedly have wondered if something would hit it when I'm quite certain it would not. Warden has a plate covering where his heart is- likely for that purpose. I noticed this on the Kunai- it hits complete center mass towards the top, it would completely penetrate the wind pipe right before the lungs. The heart is slightly left of the torso- where Warden's torso plate is.

I don't get the hate for neck snap. With all his executions being slashes, a neck snap stands out. The animation could be adjusted but that shouldn't decrease the rating to a 2 and even if it does under the argument of broken necks being survivable, there's still the leg slash at the start which added together with the broken neck, should give it a 3. Realism I'd give it a 2. You can do all of what's done in the execution. It's just the animation needs some touch ups. Efficiency I give it a 2. It took a bit of time to snap the neck but everything else is fine. For cool factor I'd give it a 3. It's a cool idea for an execution that just needs some tweaking, the the flaw is so minor that I can easily overlook it. You kinda blew that part out of proportion a bit. You kinda overhated on this one.

For toro toro you see where she’s slashing on the thighs Orochi is potentially hitting the femoral on both legs so that’s like mega bleed out and then the final stab could fuck the spine up and piercing the gut is gonna cause a boat load of bleeding very quickly.

while the katana is certainly capable of cutting through the neck, the upwards swing takes away the benefit of gravity. Plus, from the way the blade cuts, it goes in an angle up the neck, which means even more muscle and bone to cut through. I have trouble believing it would get such a clean cut, let alone a full decapitation. But it's still likely enough that I didn't take away more than 1 point.

I never count the victims armor in the grading for realism because if I had to change the grade based on each individual heroes level of armor, it would get all kinds of confusing and longwinded, so I treat it all like they are unarmored.

Bit late to the party here, but discussing things is always interesting. And I don’t have anything better to do rn anyways. Oh and sorry if the points described here were already done in the comments or discussed in the previous videos, since I don’t have much time to watch them as of now. So, about the throw and kick execution - it looks like it definitely does not hit the heart, I think the kunai goes straight to the center, maybe somewhere in trachea region, which could be quite deadly. Besides, Oro kicks it in deeper, so, not mentioning the immense pain - wouldn’t it, like, leave a massive somewhat kunai-shaped hole in the chest or at least tear the windpipe apart? If someone actually tries to remove it in an attempt to save the Warden, of course. Now, about all the one-handed grip executions (except for clean kill, obviously) - maybe it’s kinda justifiable? Mainly because, imo, heroes in For Honor universe seem to have superhuman or near-superhuman strength, even the assassins, who are the swift and agile type of hero. You know, considering how, for example, a pk can parry a charged heavy from shugo’s comically large kanabo with her cool toothpicks. The point is - they have the right amount of strength required to make one-handed attacks cut deep, even with weapons that are usually meant to be used two-handed. Also, a little nitpick about senbazuru lethality - iirc there’s a lot of veins and arteries in thighs and bleeding there is a serious thing, so it probably should kill if it goes deep enough, I think. Or maybe I’m being too much of an Orochi main here. Great vid btw, keep up the great work.

Yes you can be lethal with a katana one handed wtf do you mean lol. There are fight styles in Japan just for that not to mention it's a sword to be used for cutting down at people from horse back. It's 2 handed most of thr time because the cultural lack of shields and its about a foot shorter the longswords of Europe but using the same amount of steel. Katanas are heavy blades to add force to the chops

They can't have mortal kombat level gore to see the body split in half because they'd probably have to change the games rating but I believe that was the intention.

@@RavenKnightYT while the animations aren’t exactly accurate to where they need to be (mocap just is that way sometimes) the executions can be misleading sometimes. The cut was meant to be in the stomach area/lower stomach area in which with a very sharp blade of any sort (this one being the katana) will cause a massive and deep laceration which will cause this man’s guts to spill out. Which believe it or not is lethal.

I INTEND to pass my math test, but my end result might not show this. The same goes for here. Maybe it was their intention for them to cut the stomach, but that’s not what we see thanks to the animation and visual, and I cannot grade based on supposed intention. And yes, if Orochi cut across the stomach that COULD be lethal, depending on how deep the cut and location. But considering the cut was done with a reverse hand grip, which is going to limit the amount of control and firmness of grip as it passes the body? Who can say. So again…if the animation doesn’t show the intention, that’s a shame, but I don’t grade by intention. I grade by what is given.

U know what? I'm gonna say it. It really feels uninspired with the news heroes from Warmonger to Medjay. Why u ask? Despite them looking different (no sh!t) all have their attack animations are copied from other heroes. Every time I fight these new heroes it feels like I'm fighting the old hero since the new heroes are reusing the old heroes' animations. Let's look at Medjay, when he is in staff mode he is using Shaolin's animations, and when he is in axe mode he is using Berserker's animations. It feels like I'm fighting Shaolin and Berserker at the same time! (I know that Medjay uses other animations from other heroes but Shaolin and Berserker are the main ones the Medjay uses). It's Lazy as shit! Since Ubi said they are giving Jorm new animations for his rework to the point he feels like a new hero just tells me that it is still possible to mo-cap new animations. Yet they didn't mo-cap new animations for Warmonger to Medjay and instead reused animations from other heroes. WTF!? The only unique animations that the new heroes have are their executions, emotes, and signatures.🤦‍♀️🖕

Think you might be digging a little too deep. Sure the animations are reused but the speed and the properties of the attacks themselves are entirely different.

Just going to say youre right about mediation but for warmonger it fits the hero to have similar animations to warden and others. Because she’s essentially a mix of several knight heroes.

This video shows the problem with the dumb grading system you made here, that’s convoluted and allows for so much bias. You can tell when he’s grading an execution he likes he finds any reason to grade it higher even negating his own system. 6:40 minutes in and you can already see this happening. Despite orochi literally moving at the speed of light to the point he has an anime slash effect he still gives it a high realism rating like what? And there’s the same problem with some of the other ratings in other videos. It’s just dumb, and I don’t blame you cuz you put yourself in a corner with your convoluted rating system. Makes me wonder why you didn’t just rate them by how much you like them when it’s so obvious that’s what you end up doing anyway. Still a good video tho, like the rest. I just think your rating system allows for bias and convoluted explanations.

Well to be fair while some of the executions showcase orochi moving extremely fast, he's still cutting his opponent. Even if he wasn't moving at light speed, he would still be cutting his opponent which is still believable considering he's using a katana.
