Anybody that understand economics understand that GDP is a lag indicator, while stock market is a leading indicator. GDP tells what has happened, stock markets say what will happen. For rest of the country shock came when GDP was reported -23.4%, but for those who follow markets it was no news to them as they saw market crashing more than 40% on 24th March.( the day lockdown announcement) and knew what was in store. So the future is better than the Quarter 1 that went by. How fast would be the recovery that is to be seen. ( people may be differ in opinions)

Any market without fundamentals supporting it is a bubble as is the case at hand. There are reasons justifying this bubble: 1. Low interest rates on savings encouraging more retail investors to invest in stocks. 2. Lockdown has provided opportunity to many to try hands in the stock market as they were looking for revenue generation avenues. These two factors primarily is what creating this bubble in the market. If GDP is a lag indicator then market running on emotions without fundamentals supporting is also not a wise choice. It's not about being negative but being practical seeing the numbers that r being presented by leading agencies and economists. There is no point in being false optimistic ignoring the loomy picture ahead and losing money. If the indicators aren't right then something is definitely wrong ahead and we must acknowledge it.

If you believe it is a bubble, please go ahead and short the market. If one has taken note of recent IPO performance, one would have observed that even the QIP placement was oversubscribed. And certainly new retail investors cannot participate in it. So the claim that the market is where it is only due to new retail investors is far-fetched. Nobody said financial market shows an accurate picture, but what it does show is a direction. In this case it shows the worst is behind us - again not claiming that we are back to where we were. ( Before covid) And for the point regarding numbers by economist and agencies - they are again based on lag indicators. And if you watched Mr. Jhunjhunwala speak he said if the economist knew/can predict how the market would behave they would be among the richest person in the world.😉

The topic was to get a market guru’s views on surging markets Vis a vis a sagging economy.. the questions were being asked only with the view of eventually attributing it to the current dispensation. There are many reasons for the economy to be where it is. If that’s was the core discussion point, perhaps Raghu Ram Rajan or some one of that stature would have better addressed it. The point is that it’s becoming a bit tiring to see the hidden agendas of channels based on their political leanings. Let’s have more dispassionate discussions.
