My favourite part of this is how much Raynor worked with the Protoss. In SC2, aside from meeting Selendis and Zeratul in Wings and the time on Korhal in Void, there is little of this friendship born of necessity, that endured the fire of the Swarm and the UED. Having it play the pivotal role in defeating the Hybrids is very satisfying.

StarCraft 1 was a character-heavy story but based primarily on interplay between the various factions those characters were aligned with. StarCraft 2 was just a character-heavy story. It's a fun campaign but it really is not the same kind of military sci-fi and it's a shame. I still remember theorycrafting the story on BlizzForums and SCLegacy before release and being very confused by the prophecy arc. The real crime then, of SC2's story is that Taldarin isn't hanging out on the Hyperion chatting with Jimmy, basically.

I really want to see the original creators of SC and see what influenced their vision for SC1, and what they are doing rn

There are quite a few issues with the plot of this story, though I suspect that their first and foremost goal was to make challenging missions, which is fine. If their goal was to have a better plot than SC2’s, though… yes and no. Nothing will top the narrative disaster that is HotS, but this campaign falls under the same traps that SC2 and even Brood War fell into: Tactical genius villains becoming no more than jobbers (Mengsk and Kerrigan), and characters that frankly should have stayed dead being revived (Duke and Stukov). Also, this issue in particular is exclusive to this campaign, not SC2: armies that suffered massive casualties springing back up instantly like nothing happened (Duran in Episode 1 suddenly having a full army despite suffering pyrrhic victories that should’ve had long-term consequences, Raynor and Artanis being able to easily overcome the tower of Babil despite losing their Arkship and most of their resources in the process). And not only that, basing the story off the assumption that Kerrigan wouldn’t be spending every waking moment hunting down the hybrid upon discovering them (This was something she was concerned about at the end of BW, she wouldn’t suddenly tunnel-vision on the terrans and protoss even if they are still hostile to each other. She probably would still engage in skirmishes if they meet by coincidence, but no major commitment to killing anything but hybrid). Also, how do you suddenly LOSE the ability to make Dark Archons? Dark Archons aren’t Dragoons, they don’t require a blueprint to make like machines do! While I can’t call SC2 the best in story, I found WoL and LotV a bit better than this. Now, what about the missions? It seems like they’ve been hit or miss, because a good majority of the missions were just “rout the enemy,” which isn’t inherently bad, but a good number of them are slogs and a half, from what I’m seeing. The few that weren’t just rout missions, however, were pretty interesting. Assaulting the Tower, scrapping ships for Duke’s Norad IV, etc, they’re pretty unique objectives that break up the monotony. I just wish the monotony wasn’t so heavy.
@bluefin8445 күн бұрын
I believe this is a product of it's time and being unaware of the story traps that the actual SC2 fell into gives a better leg to stand on since it appears this could be revised a HELL of a lot more without big wig overhead. A lot of the issues you highlighted regarding mass casualties are a big glaring flare that I do absolutely believe undermines the scope of the threat at hand. That's something LOTV at least addressed by establishing that you have NOTHING and you need to find common ground amongst varying protoss factions to actually have a chance at defeating the big bad. Granted, this story doesn't have the whole corrupt khala angle so there's not a whole species of Khalai under the thrall of the Dark Lord here. From my understanding, the Golden Armada was still sizeable to attack a lot of the major factions in Korpulu, so you can make the Argument that Artanis is in command of the entirety of the Khalai and remaining Dark Templar. That's not established in the story but the argument can be made that the protoss are simply more numerable without any controlling figure enslaving them, doing most of the heavy lifting. Of course, this was made before any of the SC2 ideas had existed so I feel like most of it has to be taken with a grain of salt.

I don't HATE StarCraft II from a story perspective... it has some excellent moments, but overall, the whole "everybody teams up and fights the bad guy" felt anticlimactic and I was also not a fan of some of the retcons from the first game (ESPECIALLY the bits with the Protoss religion and the Overwind). I loved the ambiguity and shades of gray from each faction in the original meant it was difficult to call any of them good. It feels like something was lost when the villain from the second is a Thanos or Darkseid-esque uber villain. I'm reminds me of how great the StarCraft community was for so long at coming up with continuations of the story. Granted they were all made by amateur fans in the 90s, but the variety was just so much fun. Stuff like War of the Tribes, Legacy of the Confederation, to the batshit fun anime craziness of Vision of the Future, to now this fun little idea.

The mission design is quite cool, very impressive for a a custom campaign. I have to boo the use of AI voice as I consider generative AI theft, just getting that part out of the way early. Plus its quality is obviously uneven and slightly unnatural. The story writing I'm gonna have to give it a C as I find it a very mixed bag. I'll split it into pros and cons. Pros - Raynor working tightly with the Protoss is wonderful and brings in a nice multi-faction dynamic. I must also mention Durans campaign involving mixed forces being really fun and appropriate to what he's doing both in this and in regular SC/SC2. Really nice ludonarrative integration that makes all the multi-faction mission design feel good. - The big bad evil guy is interacting with and doing back and forth missions against the heroes. Big problem with SC 2 is that Duran/Amon barely interacted and their hybrid didn't say much either. What paltry dialogue they had was basically exclusively stock bad guy phrases. Here however we we see Duran, and later Cyan'Tzu actually do schemes and be actively engaging our heroes. - Kerrigan dies and doesn't get a confusing "redemption" arc that ends with her being given godhood and miraculously forgiven by the narrative. Not perfect because Raynor didn't get to do the honors but I'll take it. Cons - The clone army thing was just a weaksauce way to try to have your Stukov and Duke dying cake and have it too. It undid the meaning of their deaths in brood war and then had Mengsk be swept aside when Mengsk was a character that didn't need a convoluted clone thing to come back as an antagonist. - The Duran campaign missions got a bit repetitive in narrative premise, basically always being about "oh no gotta run and escape" followed by "here's yet another thing preventing you from doing that for the fifth time in a row". - The heroes felt too gullible in the Protoss campaign. Both Raynor and Zeratul experienced shapeshifting infiltrators backstabbing them and yet Cyan was just trusted with the mcguffin crystal all the way until the inevitable betrayal. I was honestly expecting for Zeratul to pop in and tell him he wasn't as smart as he thought he was and kicking his ass there. Doubly egregious because Zeratul knows of a Xelnaga named Cyan'Tzu AND because they found Cyan the human scientist unarmed by himself on Char in the midst of a mega war zone. Something that given the infiltrator things they experienced before should have been bloody suspicious.
