Thanks for explaining well Im M.phil physiology student and its first time im learning this so i have many questions. When they say aerobic and anaerobic exercise, what does it mean exactly? They say that when you sprint you use anaerobic and incase of marathon its aerobic. I want to know the exact sequence of shifts between metabolic pathways
@Pauliuris
@Pauliuris 3 жыл бұрын
There are no exact shifts, it's all a continuum.

Hello Doctor, I hope you reply to me I have a question that makes my brain melt thinking about the question for days if I am training for muscular endurance the 50 60% RM for higher reps we are training red muscle fibers here as it has a lower threshold and can hold the force production for longer periods with weight this muscle fibers primarily uses the oxidative pathway to regenerate the ATP my question is in first movements does these fibers when first get recruited uses the ATP Stores in the muscle before replenishing it with the oxidative pathway?

All cells would use the available ATP before attempting to create more.

hi, do you think that when i have lots of acids, - sore muscle, it makes more ATP? cause I had before, and the result was better as long as weights, i felt sore after all work out, thanks
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 2 жыл бұрын
High acid concentrations in the muscle means high rates of anaerobic metabolism is occurring. Keep in mind that long lasting soreness is not from long lasting high concentrations of acids. It's likely due to muscle damage from the work performed or from inflammation.

Hi Evan, In your opinion what will be the best intervention to burn fat, especially intra-abdominal fat? Will it be cardio or resistance exercises? Or just fasting?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 8 ай бұрын
Diet and exercise together is best. Aerobic exercise burns more calories than resistance exercise. So it should be the focus of your exercise routine when attempting weight loss. Resistance exercise is still great for you and should be included but for other reasons. Fasting only works short term because you end up just eating bigger meals once you become accustomed to it. A balanced diet reducing calories is the only effective diet plan long term. With both exercise and diet, don't start something you cannot do for the rest of your life. Behavior and lifestyle change is necessary for long term weight loss. Short term diet and exercise routines only work short term. It's like medicine. If you stop taking it, it stops working.

Sir can you share pdf please, and sir i have a question i dont understand what is the meaning of lactate threshold?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rohit Pandit. I am sorry, but I only share my presentation material with my students. It is in an effort to maintain the value they are paying for. Measuring the lactate threshold is a way of assessing when anaerobic energy dominates, and effort becomes very difficult. What this video to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqDbd4aFiK2eY5I

Hello am I correct in thinking if from this video that if I was to increase the mass of my fast twitch muscle fibres it would decrease my lactate threshold as the fast twitch fibres would be converting more pyruvate to lactate acid ? and possible recruit more fast twitch fibres ? also in reverse if the fast twitch fibres were fatigued or detrained would that cause an increase in lactate threshold ?
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's a bit more complicated than this. Fast twitch fibers do produce lactic acid more readily because they are worse at aerobic metabolism compared to show twitch fibers. However, increasing muscle fiber size means there is also more muscle mass to share in the work and distribute the acid. On the other side. If you fatigue or in some other way reduce the fast fibers that can produce force then you would be forced to rely on slow fibers that produce less force and less acid. I really don't know the answer. If you come up with something definative please share it here.

But i read that fast twitch and slow twitch are genetically predetermined and you can't increase one type through training. Its in guyton
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 3 жыл бұрын
That's true, but you can make their phenotype shift slightly to behave more like another fiber type. In reality muscle fibers exist on a continuum not as distinctly different types as we teach for simplicity.

Why do you use lactate acid term? Lactate acid doesn’t exist. It’s lactate and h+ ions.
@VivoPhys
@VivoPhys 4 жыл бұрын
You are correct that lactic acid is not produced by glycolysis, and is not the cause of metabolic acidosis from exercise. In fact lactate actually counteracts acidosis. The main cause of metabolic acidosis appears to be the breakdown of ATP produced by glycolysis when the mitochondria is unable to uptake the protons produced (when exercise intensity is too high). That is an error in this and some of my other lectures. Unfortunately, I learned this shortly after finishing this lecture series. When I eventually redo my lectures I intend to fix this and other errors that have been identified by intelligent viewers like yourself. Thank you! I am always learning and trying to improve my knowledge base. For more information on this please see this link. pdfs.semanticscholar.org/61cf/69c5e71f865ef1a6080d013448ed2f1336ba.pdf

Do you mean lactate? My understanding from my human nutrition degree is that we do not produce lactic acid and this is widely misunderstood in the sporting world. You did refer to lactate at the state then switched they are obvs both very different things.

Yes. My understanding was incorrect on the role of lactate when I made some of these videos. In time I hope to make updated videos correcting this.

It really is. Unfortunately it ripples through a lot of the other content in exercise physiology as well. Fortunately the practical applications of the material is largely unchanged. Just the theoretical understanding is incorrect. It's incorrect in a lot of exercise physiology textbooks too.
