Here is a real trip down memory lane...
A North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) documentary based around a military exercise in the English Channel, the North and the Baltic Seas. The narrative is based around six individuals, all from different NATO nations. Their social relationships are symbolic of the defence co-operation between NATO nations. Much of the footage used has been taken from a NATO exercise called "Teamwork 76", which involved 80,000 military personnel from nations including: Canada, the United States, Great Britain, West Germany (Federal Republic of Germany), the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and France. Beginning inside the cockpit of a Royal Netherlands Navy patrol aircraft, undertaking a long-range sweep of the Norwegian coast, the documentary switches to ground level, where little remains of a NATO military exercise. The swift nature of the amphibious landing by marines from the British, Dutch and US military demonstrates that even the most remote parts of NATO territory are not out of reach. The narrative follows the crew members of participating military personnel to Amsterdam (Holger, Paul, Jim, George, Arie and Carl). The exercise is then played-out, taking into account the various personnel, military hardware and locations involved. The fifteen day exercise is set to conclude once the Marines have linked-up with Norwegian troops, starting from a distance of 5,000 miles apart. By moving eastwards, reinforcements are expected to come under the control of SACEUR. It is demonstrated how this will be factored into the wider strategic plans of SACEUR (Autumn Forge). Supplies and reinforcements must also be brought to the troops of SACEUR, via the oceans. This task is undertaken by SACLANT, operated from the NATO headquarters at Northwood, England. The vital sea-lanes are protected by STANAVFORLANT, a rapid reaction naval force based around the Atlantic. For the purpose of the exercise, they are to ensure a flotilla of merchant vessels can cross the Atlantic safely. Dipping sonar, operated by the Royal Canadian Navy, are featured as a modern method of identifying enemy submarines. Long range maritime patrol aircraft, Cruiser class warships and electronic intelligence craft are also featured as examples of advanced military technologies available to NATO counties. A Soviet bomber aircraft is seen being escorted by a US Navy fighter aircraft over the NATO flotilla. A US/UK carrier "strike force" is also deployed for this operation, seen emerging from Scapa Flow in Scotland. Shots of the various forces involved show them preparing for the landing operation, intercut with shots of senior military commanders plotting the operation. Units of the Federal German Republic play a role in monitoring the exposed flank of the Baltic Sea. Reconnaissance aircraft are dispatched to photograph possible threats at sea. Navy vessels then engage the enemy, thus eliminating any potential threat to the carrier strike force. Aboard a US carrier. Multiple shots of aircraft being launched from the deck, including one aborted take-off, as pilots eject into the sea. The landings are then underway. Troops from various NATO nations arrive by landing craft or helicopter and heavy armour is driven ashore. The operation moves inland and is monitored electronically by the SACEUR from afar. The military exercise sequence is concluded by vessels coming into dock at Amsterdam, where a crew is celebrating successfully completing the operation. Finally, the group from the opening sequence take a tour around the large flotilla of international military vessels, now all docked in port together.
