Might have said ‘engage the hindquarters’ a fair few times! 🙈😂 Would love to know your favourite suppleness exercises?

I was wondering, what do you specifically mean by supple? I have heard different meanings form different trainers, some say it has to do with their jaw and neck, others say it has to do with the back and hind. I personally think it is a mixture of both but what is your idea of supple?

Hi, I agree with you, every trainer/ rider has their own take on suppleness, and same as you I think it’s both. For me it’s that feeling that a horse is moving freely and relaxed without resistance to a riders aid. That relaxation comes through their jaw, poll, and over their back, helping the horse to produce elastic steps, and a degree of swing through their back and tail. Also that the horse can hold and maintain a balanced rhythm without needing to lean on you, and when you relax the contact to allow them to stretch they can take the contact forward, stretching their neck out while still staying in a nice balance. All of the above then helps when your riding for example a 10m circle where you want the horse to stay relaxed, balanced, soft round your leg, yet still coming through from behind.

@@EJMEQUESTRIAN thank you for your response! I tried the bending poles exercise today and found a huge improvement in my horses trot and rhythm so thank you for that!
