My dudes, if you have one of the twins, I can guarantee you that the left pipe's cat is the one that'll be discoloured. This happens when the left silencer gets waterlogged while washing the bike( while on a side stand). The flow resistance added by the water causes the gasses to back up and temps to build up. The likely hood of this being SP or fuelling issues is very low. It'll happen when some idiot looks at the hole and decides it can be filled up, the side stand just makes the job easier for the water.

@bigbearbangalore, in theory, yes. I have a GT650 and i am living though the pain of having this issue be redcurrant. I also believe that the issue is exacerbated when the drain hole near the cat is clogged by debris. Also, I was appealing to the audience when i said "My Dudes". Nothing but respect for you Sir. The water- logging also caused my CAT to sort of have a meltdown which worsened the issue. I have learnt to use a paddock stand for water washes, which I do myself now.

So, I'm here for the nerds. Majorly a catalytic convertor is made of 3 metals i.e. Palladium (Iron Man thing), Platinum, and Rhodium. Now these metals acts as catalyst and makes a redox reaction to convert the unburnt hydrocarbons(fuels) oxidized to carbon-di-oxide, carbon-mono-oxide, and water, and it reduces nitric oxides to carbon-di-oxide and nitrogen gas respectively.

tip from a welder here after we make an exh. its discolored every where to remove the discoloration use a wire brush wheel on an angle grinder, follow up with a scotchbrite wheel, if you want a mirror finish use finally a buff wheel with buffing compound

Fun fact, The header costs around 13.7k from the showroom. I faced the same issue, in the end I had to replace the whole exhaust header. Prolonged riding in the rain with a broken plug adaptor, melted the CAT in the header and exhaust.
