@AlexEnterprises "With the end of the Golden Age, we got to see the end of Guts's search for purpose...." I want to rebuke that. He didn't stop searching for purpose, not until after he gets the Berserker Armor. The Golden Age was all about learning to love again, and Conviction and Black Swordsman were all about what happens when Guts persues an unworthy purpose; it's only when we see him calmed from his rage by Casca that we see Guts decide for himself what his purpose is. Given the choice between fighting for revenge and fighting to defend those he cares about, we see him pull himself together and decide his own fate, right then and there, to carry on for the sake of others, to use his strength and rage for something greater.

Berserk follows Nietzsche's philosophy. History repeats itself. His child follows the same story with Gambino's. Guts himself follows the same story of Griffith in the Black Swordman arc. Guts was driven by hatred, ignoring what matters to him, becoming empathetic to other people around him.

This perfectly captures why Berserk is such a captivating story. The characters are all flawed and have such emotional depth, things you just really don't find too often, let alone in a Manga/Anime. It also worries me that if we're ever lucky enough to a full adaptation of this on screen, the soul of story would be lost for sake of quick entertainment. I mean, the Manga is the epitome of take your time with the story and characters. You encapsulated their struggles and why this story is so engrossing perfectly. Bravo.

In berserk, as is alluded to here, guts's sword is his will to life, or in other words, his purpose. The sword in general has a quality of will in berserk, as is shown with casca. It represents the will to live and the taking of responsibility for one's own life. In makes sense then that gut's sword has always been large, too large for a man, or when he was younger, a boy. The swords guts carries, being larger, show that his will to live is larger than others, which is ironic because he himself does not see a purpose for himself. That is, not until his mountain training, where godo tells guts his own life story, and it being so near guts's in symbolism, shows him his purpose. Godo, like guts, never knew or thought he had a purpose in life. But Form a young age, like guts, he was given his purpose without knowing it. Godo since childhood was taught to swing the hammer, and make swords. Guts from childhood was taught to swing the sword (perhaps godo makes the sword (the purpose for life) and guts swings it, an interesting thought considering godo shows guts his own purpose). It was not until much later in Godo's life that he realized what his purpose was and is to make swords. Guts upon hearing this realizes that he is much the same, that his purpose was right in front of him the whole time, his sword was right in front of him the whole time. Considering that the sword is a representation of the will to life, then it's interesting that guts's swords have always shattered. At this point it's not all to litteral because every time this happens guts does not suffer an existential crisis, rather, it reflects that his will is not strong enough and that a new will must be forged. But even this sounds wrong considering guts, until the eclipse, has never really been 'broken' (I'm not counting the fights in which his sword breaks or he is 'defeated' because in those instances guts does not loose his will to life or never knew he had one). Indeed even in the fight with the leader of the holy purple rhino knights guts' s sword was only broken to be replaced by a larger, more powerful sword, which was zodd's. Which brings up another interesting action: guts's refusal to keep zodd's sword. was it that he thought the sword (will) was too strong? Unlikely. Was it because he did not want the sword (will) of a monster, which is to say not a human sword (will)? Perhaps. But now I'm off track. Every time gut's sword is broken he gets a stronger, larger sword, which represents a stronger, greater will. But as I stated earlier the breaking of his swords never really corresponds with a breaking of his will. What is more likely is that his swords were not strong enough for him. And so every time his sword could not match his will he got a sword that could. Of course, this goes to THE sword. The sword so great no other man may wield it, the sword so great it cannot be broken (as far as we know): The dragon slayer. The eclipse did break guts in a way, but it also gave fuel to his will, it gave him a purpose strong and destructive (not only to his enemies), revenge. After this infusion of will even the strongest of swords could not withstand his will, it was then that he acquired a sword that matched his will. Think of the swords name... dragon slayer. Swords are usually made to kill other humans, indeed the sword Godo gave guts after the eclipse was made for that purpose, but broke. But the dragon slayer is different, it is meant to kill dragons. This means that by guts wielding it he has a will that can kill dragons. And he does, he kills many dragons, in the form of apostles. Remember the scene right after guts kills his first apostle with the dragon slayer. Remember the line that dragons are only dragons because man can't kill them, then the question of what someone is if they are a dragonslayer. Well, unless miura is pulling wool over our eyes, if man can't kill dragons, and if guts kills dragons, is guts a man? I say yes, absolutely. But he has also transcended the will of man, his will is now superhuman. He may now be ubermench. It is either that or man is enately capable of killing dragons. But when it comes to guts it's hard to say. He certainly seems superhuman, but is human. There have been so many instances in which guts should have died that might make one think that he is not human, but then that sort of goes against the point of guts's character, which is to be human and dify the odds, which brings us into the realm of causality. Does guts always survive because he has to, because he has been ordained to? Or does he have full control over his fate? Whatever the case may be the story of guts is the story of the will of man. Ultimately he and we dont know if we are in full control or are guided by causality, or even both (the philosophical implications of which are quite complex). I have a feeling that if berserk ends this question will not be answerd. It will be up to the readers to decide and discuss, as it is in life.

Another great manga/anime (that imo, reminded me of beserk due to similar themes and gory, horrific artstyle) is...Trigun. Vash and his brother Knives aren't exactly human though, but Vash feels responsible as well as immense guilt for the death of Rem and that city he unwillingly detonated... death surrounds him, often portrayed merged with twisted manifestations of people's deaths that he caused, and knives welcomes it. He blames himself, and tends to hold onto the belief that everyone's fate is a blank canvas.. so he keeps going against his seeming fate of being a doomsday device by being a believer in "love and peace" and trying not kill anyone including his enemies. This theme is similar to beserks, yet on the opposite side of the same coin. Trigun is also very old, so I can't remember it all, but vash like guts, is heavily scarred and traumatised and seems to welcome his demise

I see Guts as a metaphor for mankinds eternal struggle against causality. We fight so hard against it and we tell ourselves we have free will, and sometimes it seems like we are overcoming the causality of nature with our willpower, our intelligence, our technology etc. We are clearly different from other animals but at the end of the day down to the psychological level our brains are still subject to the same laws of nature and our decisions are still part of causality. Guts also seems to be a metaphor for the struggle of man to find meaning as you said in the video. Looking at the world in a purely scientific way though life has no objective meaning and humans have no free will. But psychologically we need to think there is meaning and free will in order to function. This was Nietzsche's dilemma and unsurprisingly Nietzschean themes are all over Berserk, he was even directly quoted by Slan. There are also clear references to Carl Jung's ideas. Like Gut's beast of Darkness is like the Jungian Shadow, our unconscious mind,and our suppressed desires. The more Guts tried to suppress the beast the more it grows within him. Gut's embodies the struggle of man in many ways. Skull Knight even says that himself. This is really a great work of psychology based on Nietzschean and Jungian themes. That's how I interpret it anyway. We still don't know how it will end though or the ultimate point Miura is trying to make.

From reading Berserk since 2006, the themes of fighting against causality and pre-destiny is a central aspect of the series. In the lost chapter (083. "God of the Abyss (2)" which was pulled from Volume 13), the idea of evil was introduced. The idea of evil is essentially dictating causality in the Berserk universe. With the astral and physical planes now merged together (shown at the end of the Falcon of the millennium empire arc), the idea of evil and its agents the God hand now have more influence than previously. However, I'm in the camp that the merging of the worlds will ultimately lead to the downfall of the idea of evil and the God hand since it will be easier for a being to cause harm. It wouldn't be surprising to see Guts and Griffith team up at the end if the series and finally bring down the idea of evil and God hand. Thus restoring order to the world and allowing people to create their own destiny without an outside being exerting its influence.

I know I'm finding this late. But lately I've been revisiting this series through YT fan analysis, and I'll say the work put into breaking this series down is much needed. Not only that it is GREAT! It's amazing how much people are finding in this groundbreaking series. This adds on to many things I've thought about the series. The parallels, philosophical views found make for great conversation to be had for many many years to come. I've heard of "existentialism" but was never quite clear on what it meant. But when you hear it so much you begin to understand it somewhat. But those who wrote on it, the philosophers of the past, takes much examination. This is why the Skull Knight always refers to Guts as the "struggler". The concept of having the "WILL TO SURIVE". And by doing so he is defying what would've been. By changing one's own FATE.

Griffith know Guts are very independent minded which show in when Guts always reject the offer from Griffith to join the Band of the Hawk until very last, this mean by definition Guts who don't have dream but yet not depend on other people dream = Griffith's friend.

Crazy that I never realized Guts ended up just like Gambino.
@bethanyreynolds72705 ай бұрын
Not his character but his situations definitely. Unlike Gambino, Guts actually tries to mature and be a better person focused on the beneficiality of survival rather than only procuring angst against it. Gambino shuns away Shisu but Guts goes on this entire journey of purpose to restore Casca's mind and agency back. That is the point of Berserk. Moving away from tragedy and trauma, overcoming it and trying to survive for the better and more rewarding facets of life (love) even when the odds are stacked against you.

Your voice fits the situation in this story! And using the first anima music was an awesome idea. It’s way better then the other ones.

As many times as I’ve read Berserk never saw the parallels between his foster parents and Guts and Casca. This series has so many layers and has meant so many different things to me over the years. Great video my dude. 🤘

9:43 I know I'm not the first to point this out but on the last page of Vol. 9. When Guts refers to the medicine he rubbed into his wound, Miura alludes to Casca as that medicine to Guts now! In fact, if you analyze the last panel, you will notice that Casca's head has "covered up" the nose scar inflicted by Gambino. Deftly done by the author!!!
@teemdynasty89296 жыл бұрын
Edward Gaines actually the symbolism in that page signifies that casca has become Gut's sword. Casca always wanted to be griffith's sword and as guts said that a sword must be by it's master's side. But instead of griffith's she became his.

@@teemdynasty8929 Whoa! Casca *IS* Guts' sword?! Never considered that, thanks! (In fact, Casca does seem to "shine dimly.")

Interesting pronounciation of Guts. Sounds almost like Götz, an actual medieval German name. And I read the name was meant to be cool and somewhat German sounding. Though supposedly any similarities with a famous badass one-armed mercenary captain named Götz are purely coincidental.

How I think berserk will end, is Guts, now with a ruined body due to constant use of the berserker armor, living a half decent life with Casca as his wife, thinking "this isn't so bad after all" . And finally, we'll be shown their son, who they'll have named after Griffith. This is what Griffith saw in his vision, when he's shown being taken care of by Casca as his wife with a son named guts. But the reason it will be guts who experiences this fate is because he will become the human Griffith abandoned to become Femto
