I heard someone else mention that the dad is the one Claire is most comfortable with, as in the original animation she watched her dad's little show with normal eyes, but watched her grandpa's and mom's show with fear in her eyes. Her dad is a rather nice guy deep down, he just happens to suffer from severe self-image issues and implied abuse from his wife.

@@ShinOpaque You're right, he isn't a good parent, but I'd argue that he's the lesser of 3 evils, or maybe tied with the grandpa for Lesser Shitbag. He does make passive agressive comments towards Claire's, but uses no physical violence and makes no threats as the mom does and doesn't chase her through the house like the grandpa does. The father is totally most likely neglectful and a bystander to Claire's terrible situation, but Claire doesn't fear he'll outright harm her. She totally feels safest with him. She doesn't run from him. She runs from the grandfather, who was chasing her.

I don’t think she’s the most self-aware of her mistreatment of Opal as she treats her, she abuses Opal the most, there’s no “self-aware” tier list, especially when she’s too busy with making sure she appeals to Opal to get what she wants. I think he’s think that’s why Jack made her so deformed and putrid, because she’s inhumane, without integrity, and painfully in denial. I’d interpret that making of her looking more human is to illustrate human desperation and how dirty even someone that looks like a human can be. Maybe I’m projecting, as that was my parents’ dynamic; my mom was the leader in the mistreatment, but she didn’t look like it, and she was far from self-aware, she used me to be both her little radio and her mirror, a therapist she could berate and then confide in, refusing her mistreatment with statements like “I feel so awful tha-I just feel so awful…” Deluding herself until she could take her anger out on me. And while my dad tried to help, he was too wrapped up in his worries and problems. Though, it’s kinda hard not to project on such a relatable story, so I think there’s less parallels to “self-awareness,” it shows “self-pity.” Her looking human there has nothing to do with awareness, in my eyes, it just deepens her depravity.

The weird thing about Opal. You can interpret the story at face value, and it still works. Like, if you think about it like it’s own of those old “moral” stories. The ones where a kid disobeys their parents, and the universe decides to be extremely cruel to them for some reason.
