Bo Burnham was raised in an environment deeply rooted in Christianity. He grew up in an atmosphere where religion played a significant role in his life. Bo attended a Catholic school where he was exposed to religious teachings and practices from an early age. His experiences with religion and the way it shaped his worldview have been reflected in some of his comedy and performances, where he often touches on themes related to faith, existentialism, and societal norms. Burnham's upbringing seems to have influenced his introspective and critical approach to various topics, including religion, which he sometimes explores in his creative work.

The Mormon Church, officially known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), is a Christian religious denomination originating in the 19th century in the United States. Founded by Joseph Smith in 1830, Mormons believe in the Book of Mormon as another testament of Jesus Christ alongside the Bible. They follow unique teachings, including the belief in modern prophets, continuing revelation, and the potential for all to become gods in the afterlife.
The LDS Church is known for its emphasis on family values, missionary work, and strict moral standards, including abstaining from alcohol, tobacco, and premarital sex. Temples hold a central role in their faith, where sacred ceremonies and ordinances are performed.
In 2002, the church gained attention for its involvement in genealogical research and extensive humanitarian aid programs. However, controversies have arisen regarding historical practices like polygamy (discontinued by the main church in the late 19th century) and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals due to their stance on same-sex marriage and gender roles. Despite criticisms and controversies, the Mormon Church continues to grow globally, maintaining a significant presence in various countries.

That line "My love is the type of thing you earn and when you earn it you won't need it." I'm not really that religious anymore, at least not of the Christian variety, but that line just hits differently

it is true many people do good to try and gain some sort of reward and there are those that feel nothing they do is good enough, we spend to much time looking at how we are perceived we don't look inwardly at who we are if we did and excepted that we are not perfect and that nothing else in the universe is we might find our point of ground where we can just be.

The adoption of a hard materialist philosophy need not lead to nihilism, but even if you do go down the nihilism route, it joins back up with recognition that you are resigned to the reality you exist within. And that dictates things like pain and pleasure, joy and anguish, etc. It also is such that your brain recognizes other people, and through mirror neurons reflects suffering witnessed in others onto yourself, which provides inherent (and unavoidable) incentive to seek to alleviate suffering, to avoid spreading it ones self, etc. Enter rational humanism.

A big inspiration for Bo is Tim Minchin. You might want to watch his song Thank you god, but other interesting songs by him are The pope song and Prejudice.
