i really dont think that will make any difference. Id say its a waste of time to be honest. What i always did was use a small copper or aluminum bar and essentially make distro blocks for your speaker wires using tinned copper lugs. Simple, easy and feels more permanent and durable than the braiding to me. Plus its far easier to add jumpers to each block to easily change the impedence to go from daily to burping.

The way I braided speaker wire when I was in high school was I twisted the wire into 9 parts. For each 3 sets of 3, I french braided them(left goes over center under right, right goes over center under left, left goes over center, under right, etc). Then I took those 3 set of braided wires, and I braided those again the same way, following the natural ridges of the braided wire. The final product looked nice and took solder REALLY nice, as there was a lot of places for the solder to soak into.

Can't imagine a day without beard. The so called skin effect only occurs at very high frequencies. Technically you could use single core wire aswell. One great thing about this is, it is a extremely good connection, maybe almost as strong as soldered. Can't wait for the build videos of I guess frankie 2.0! Forgot to add a thing about the skin effect. for example, with 60Hz the "skin depth" would be around 8.5mm if I remember correctly. Also it becomes a real problem in the 30kHz+ range. Here you can get into real trouble if you want to transmit lots of power through a cable, for this the so called litz wire is used. It consists of many fine insulated conductors to minimise the losses caused by the skin effect. Hope I could clarify it a bit.

The Litz effect of ac currents traveling over the surface of a conductor, is so tiny over the audio frequency, that your better of just using crimps. The contact resistance of a spliced cable is probably more than you would have gained in the first place. All the best.

What size Twist on wire connectors are those?
@seancarraher7 жыл бұрын
Crimp the wires together using an Uninsulated butt connector then solder both ends and then heat shrink over that. Think about the other two connections in a circuit like this. The 8 gauge direct leads to the sub are soldered to the tinsel leads which are then soldered to the voice coil. Then the amp connection is a set screw to a terminal block that is soldered to the circuit board.
@joshthoulion90817 жыл бұрын
Where do you get your psi recone?
@Gcrilla7 жыл бұрын
Current traveling across the surface of the conductor is known as the "skin effect". It doesn't really happen until you get up into 350MCM wire and larger because the size of the conductor forces the current to fill the whole conductor, so I have to say that ultimately your wire twisting is unnecessary but if thats how you like to do it. I would crimp a lug to each 8gauge and bolt the lugs together like you hook up an industrial motor it's fool proof.

Nice little trick, but i do believe it would work just fine on DC too also when you have twisted it around you could maybe finish it off with a crimp too? That would also make the connection even stronger but it does look really beautiful and do whatever you want about your beard. after that, you should dip it in flux then into some molten solder. the solder can fill in the air pockets and will put a protecting coating on the wires-preventing oxidation, do a resistance test to see if it is better.
@michaelwilkes06 жыл бұрын
@EXOabigdeal So, if you then took that and soldered it, would it actually make it worse because it would reduce the surface area?

Michael Wilkes I was told not to solder my direct leads. The wire does not like the heat. It was from a Digital Designs dealer in my area. I can't say if it's 100% true but I did mine similar to this video and haven't had any issues. Hope this helps.

Fear the Beard FTW! Just wondering why you wouldn’t additionally solder the connection and use a mining clamp instead of a wire nut that could vibrate loose over time. Not saying it’s ever happened but, that would certainly not be a bad idea on top of the braiding. Then you could just heat shrink it all.

Ok. Whats the difference between ac and dc on a sub set-up
@UniCrafter7 жыл бұрын
Main differences- AC is high-ish voltage, can travel decent distances without needing thick wire. DC is low voltage, requires cables twice as thick as rated current in order to deliver power to the amps without voltage loss. AC CAN benefit from higher-end cables depending on what speakers you're driving, even shielded for SQ. DC isn't picky.
@TheTardis1577 жыл бұрын
DC is what powers the amp from your car. AC is what is fed to your sub from the amp.

A crimp connection that is done well with the right tools is always better than twisting wires together. without compression, the amount of contact on twisted wires is pretty inconsistent. I A quality crimp should create a colloidal bond between the surfaces of the metals due to the huge amount of force involved, which leads to very low contact resistance.

Why not unravel all strands then mesh them together and solder it? You can then use some thick wall marine grade heat shrink to cover it. Marine grade has a coating on the inside which keeps moisture out.
