the short length could go either way. exodia gets an ftk or bricks turn 1 and then metalfoes otk's exodia. it is rare to see exodia survive on turn 1 where the ftk fails or even win going second. that is why this deck is a real coin flip. it is the ultimate make or break deck.

Turns out really broken cards on multiple copies require negation spam to stop it and most of them aren't equipped for it. If spellbook lose I think it will take the cup cause neither spright nor tear lists are very well equipped for the exodia deck.

Tear can potentially mill 10 before Exodia even plays, if they hit all copies of one piece, Exodia loses. Big 'if' though.

If they are at that they are already under last will and need to god mill to not die (and exodia has to misplay by board locking. As long as it doesn't board lock they can continue thanks to last will) It's truly a "do they win the coin flip" cause without they rely on exodia drawing a brick hand (which did happen tbf)

In the inital TCG versipn one canon soldier send itself allows for massive spam. Since the if a card is sent to the gy part of the effect is fullfilled no matter how many cards you special summpm from the deck.

The only limited list of the year 2000 (in April) hit all of these cards from 3 to 1: Exodia Pieces, Raigeki, Dark Hole, Change of Heart, Last Will, Pot of Greed, and Mirror Force. Graceful, Duster, and Reborn were semi'd and Trap Hole went from 1 to 3 (early example of power creep)

I still find it hard to belive Last Will worked like this. I know its not OPT, but I always thought you get 1 summon per monster destruction. I googled it a bit, but couldnt find anything conclusive.

Well we have multiple erratas of this card looking at the yugioh wiki. The first version said this. If a monster of yours is sent from the field to the Graveyard during the turn that you've played this card, you can select a monster with an ATK of 1500 points or less from your Deck and play it as a Special Summon. Shuffle the Deck after playing the card. This card is active for 1 turn only. Every version afterwards specified that the effect could only be used once You can only use this card's effect once, and only during this turn. When a monster on your side of the field is sent to your Graveyard, you can Special Summon 1 monster with an ATK of 1500 points or less from your Deck. Then shuffle your Deck. I think with these versions in mind its pretty clear, that spamming out monsters was how the initial print was legal to be used and had to be fixed in subsequent prints, but clearly still too busted so it got banned eventually.

What I'm questioning is how they're playing it like 1 monster destroyed = summon as many times as you want. In my mind, summon once per monster destroyed should be the correct way to play. The biggest tell for me are the 3 monster reborn in the decklist. The way they are playing it, monster reborn adds virtually nothing to the deck. Just NS Cannon Soldier, sac itself play last will, GG. No point in monster reborn at all. If it worked like I described, you needed Last Will + Cannon soldier and searcher on the field, so the Soldier can tribute a searcher, last will summons another, and thats the loop.

This is because even after the first summon from the deck, the condition that a monster was sent to the gy this turn is still met. Therefore every consequent summon from the deck is perfectly legal with first version. I mentioned the updated text, as that spamming part was pretty much the only thing fixed in it. The ocg version though probably does work as you say. Here is a copy of it. このターンに基地へ送られたモンスター1体の代 わりに、デッキから攻撃力1500以下のモンス ター1体をフィールド上に出すことができる。 Instead of a monster sent to the base this turn, you can put a monster with Attack 1500 or less from the deck onto the field. Its a bit hard to decipher what is meant specifically since its translated by deepl from the original japanese and it was also back from when konami was terrible at writing effects. Since this list is a ocg decklist it should follow ocg ruling.

Spamming out 4 is correct. It doesn't say "This turn when a monster goes to grave you can summon", it says if a monster went to grave this turn. That only has to happen once and you have access to the ability for the rest of the turn. It may have misled you because he happened to use it sequentially earlier in the cbc, but he doesn't have to. I imagine Monster Reborn is there simply because it's a great blowout card in case last will isn't drawn or is negated, and this is OG OG Yugioh, so there's not much to choose from.

i'm pretty sure the old last will is supposed to be 1 monster sent to gy = 1 monster from deck, as in that every time a monster is sent to gy you can get one from deck. this is how the deck was played in earlier videos of this tournament so i dunno what changed

I think these lists didnt use the initial print of last will which was printed in the very first yugi starter deck. It got an errata after 2 years in the second yugi starter deck in 2004(TCG), which is probably the version you saw in previous cbc. This is the initial print version. There was never a deck that existed before the second yugi starter deck in the cbc, except for exodia now. This why all other decks use the erratad version od last will. one thing i noticed is that thunder dragon was released in volume 7 which was in january 2000 however even without it, the deck would still be very strong. you could use black hole, waboku, and raigeki as substitutes. tribute to the dead is also good to run as it can give you 2 pieces.

What are we comparing here. Comparing to its time, it's much, much stronger - it takes roughly 18 years for decks to become better than Exodia, Tearlaments will not last that long if they haven't been surpassed already. If you're comparing based on strength alone, it can beat any deck if it draws well enough, sure, but it wouldn't do anything in tournaments, past let's say 2017. It can brick sometimes, loses to Droll and sometimes it can semi brick and loses to Ash, all going first, and they can't beat any modern deck going second.
