Back in 1972, when I had the chance to learn some Vietnamese, I got to the point where I realized every new vocabulary word I learned was a loan word from Chinese. It made me conscious of how much influence China had in Asia, and made me really interested in learning Chinese. It's 51 years later, and I never got around to learning Chinese, and have forgotten almost all my Vietnamese. I'm so glad I came across your KZbin channel, and enjoy your stories about the people and quirks of Vietnam as much as the language lessons. Thanks!

Chinese heavily influence the vocabulary of Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese. In fact many Vietnamese terms are similar sounding to Cantonese Chinese.

Tried my best to put the words and sentences that Annie shows in this video in Chinese characters (hanzi, hanja, kanji, Chữ Hán). Nom could get easily confused by non-hanzi users, and that's why I didn’t put them here in this post. Hope this would be helpful! This is so interesting, in southern varieties of Chinese. We often have 2 ways to pronounce a word. The literary pronunciation and the vernacular. In hokkien in particular, nang sounds like dang which is the vernacular and Trong sounds like Tiong which is literary.

Being a native, educated English speaker, I see how many words in my language are put together from pieces (morphemes) with their own meanings and how these pieces are shared among words. Now you show us that Vietnamese is similar and I can begin to look for these patterns. While I am still at a very elementary level of my Vietnamese learning, still these advanced lessons till the soil of my mind for a later fruitful harvest. Thank you for all the thought you put into your language and for sharing those thoughts with us.

I have never learned Vietnamese, but I know several Chinese languages and some Japanese. When you say these Sino-Vietnamese words slowly, I can figure out what they are. For example, the 6th group of words are: strength/advantage 优点, priority 优先, promotion/favored treatment 优待, best 最优.

This is so important when buying a dictionary for Vietnamese (=VN). The dictionary has to explain the morphemes (từ ghép in VN). Otherwise you just can translate but you hardly can progress with your learning. The Langenscheidt dictionary doesn´t do that. But I also have a thick VN-German dictionary printed in Vietnam, from nhà xuất bản Bách Việt, which does it. Sino-VN words can be detected by a different word order. Pure VN is a head-first language (example: that wise woman is literally "woman wise that") whereas Chinese has a word order such as English. Example: Ðộng vật = mobile + "thing" = animal, nông dân = shallow + people = peasants. Here all morphemes are of Chinese origin. But they are often mixed with VN words. In colloquial VN a VN word might by added on (bad language): Cây (VN=tree) cổ (Chinese = antique) thụ (Chinese = tree) = old tree, ngày (VN = day) sinh (VN (?) = to be born) nhật (Chinese = day) = birthday. The latter expression may also be simply called "ngày sinh". ===> A simple list of the most-used Chinese morphemes would be very helpful.

Nặng is an old Han word and Trọng is present Han word. Mắt is eye from "mục" an old Han word and Nhãn is a new one. Fujianese Chinese still uses "Mắt" for eye, but Mandarin Chinese uses Yan ( Nhãn) for eye. Heo is from Hai (Hợi), Lợn is from Lun also meaning pig.

I never knew the word 'mình' can be used to mean 'I' and not just 'we', interesting! And the video was very useful but may I also suggest include the corresponding chinese characters next to the han-viet words (perhaps show it in the captions), it also clears confusion of the homophones (tối/𣋁 means 'dark' in native viet, but tối/最 means 'most' in chinese)? Nice video!

There are some mis-translations : @2:25 tôn trọng luật phát should not translated as( a serious accident), should be as (respect the law). @@5:14 Hoàn thiên một sản phẩm, Hoàn thiện came from Chinese 完善, it means a product had been completed perfectly, it doesn't mean to improve a product.
