Thanks for the lessons. So,if gửi means to give in some context, then what is the actual word for “give” ?thanks

There are many words that mean "to give" depending on the situation. The most common and generic ones used in the Saigon dialect are "đưa" or "đưa cho".

That same way works in all underdeveloped countries. Corrupted officials are everywhere in every country. What is important is the actual ratio of those get used to being bribed from all the others.

in Southern accent v can be pronounced as v /v/ or d /j/, depending on speaker's mood (just kidding 😁) especially với is usually pronounced as dí in Southwestern dialect.

Why don't women in Vietnam drink coffee, is it only seen as a male thing? I am assuming that homemade coffee is, but starbucks is not considered coffee in Vietnam. Perhaps more women prefer milk tea

As someone learning Northern vietnamese it took me a while to figure out that "Thối" has a different meaning in Saigon - I kept asking myself "Why does 'stop being stinky' (khỏi thối)" mean 'Keep the change'"!?!?

It is a joke to compare VN to Japan. I left my cell phone at a restaurant in Tokyo once. The staff kept it for me until I came back the next day. My sis forgot her cell phone at a restaurant in SG, she went back immediately but the staff said they did not see her phone. When her friend dialed her number, her phone rang !! It was found in a drawer by the cash register. 🙃

At first, it's really worrying that people bribe at hospitals. But that's coming from a background where you expect medical staff to be uniquely 'good' people. Which, as I suppose many people know, is not true---no matter which country you're in.
