But always remember, Although Chinese characters have a very strict text structure, but its language organization pattern is in loosely form, or can also be understood as "flexible". in short, you might not learn fluent Chinese through strict grammar study, actually, stiffly grammar memory will only trap you in the dilemma of Indo-European grammar, so after listening to Blueprint's example, Remember the words mentioned in the clip and forget the sentence patterns these examples represent. otherwise, you may struggle to move on. Happy learning, cheers.

Yes, you can understand Chinese as, "You can describe the same thing in a dozen ways (words), but every way of describing is logical", so to the Chinese "the important thing is the meaning" , rather than expression"

Chinese characters are not only a symbol mapped to a meaning, it is also included knowledge of thousands year. For example the word of PAIN in chinese is 痛苦. This is composed with 2 words. If you look up the meaning of each characters, you should notice different level of pain. 痛 means a physical sense of being hurt. 苦is mental feelings of bitterness, is the p Saddness inside.

You are really good at Chinese! A thing I would like to add is when Chinese people adopt/translate words from other languages, the characters are chosen not only based on their pronunciation, but also have much to do with their meanings. For example, if a word is a positive word, people tend to use positive characters and vice versa. One of my favourite example is when people translate the famous movie star Marilyn Monroe into Chinese, they use "玛丽莲·梦露", in which the five characters respectively mean "agate, beautiful, lotus, dream and dew", together making it sounds feminine and elegant. In the example of Coca Cola (可口可乐), the translator also cherry-picked the characters and they express the meaning of "tasty" and "happy".

Actually, your understanding of the meaning of the word "cola" isn't very thorough. The translation of "Coca-Cola" into "可口可乐 (kě kǒu kě lè)" can be said to be elegant. On one hand, it is transliterated, and on the other hand, it gives it a beautiful meaning:可口(kěkǒu)" means tasty;"可乐 (kě lè)" means can (obtain) happiness. Together, it implies something delicious and enjoyable, bringing happiness to people. It's very meaningful. Similar translations include "Champs-Élysées"香榭丽舍大道,"Hermès"爱马仕,"Safeguard"舒肤佳,"Jetta"捷达and so on.

Woah, Im Māori and have been wanting to learn the Chinese language for a while. I tossed up between Cantonese, which is spoken locally by the lady and her family at the fast food place and the Mandarin options made more readily available online. I stumbled upon this video and Im so happy. I've tried Chinese tutorials with Chinese tutors and lost focus pretty quickly. Now watching this video helps me to make sense of the language and sentence structure because the morphemes concept is so similar to how Māori words are constructed and used to express meaning. Our language has a strong " imagery " base which to me😮 is the same as what youve explained here. E.g. roro means brain, hiko means power, which makes the word: rorohiko = computer. We also do the " borrowed word" thing too based on sound, e.g. moto-paika = motorbike. I feel my next attempt at Mandarin will be made easier although in Māori we only have 2 intonations, long and short whereas in Mandarin, there's 5...that I know of. Yes, the vowels are the same but the pronuciation or enunciation of words so different when it comes to conversational usage. E.g. we would say the word...Hui as 2 syllables- who-ee, whereas Mandarin is one syllabel- huway...Anyway, I just want to say many thanks for this helpful video. Its given me much food for thought and comparing it to our native tongue gives me a brighter view and appreciation of the beautiful Chinese language. ❤❤❤

The macron in Māori indicates vowel length, not intonation. Or at least it did when I studied Latin in high school, back in a previous century. It goes without saying that vowel length can affect vowel quality and/or pitch contours, but those Asian languages are outside the scope here.

@maynardhogg lolz, yes thank you for that explanation...YES, you are absolutely correct. Macrons do indicate the length of the vowel meaning when applied the vowel sound is a long sound. 事實上,私以為只需將基礎的一千個漢字(1000 Basic Characters)都習得其義即可,如「飛」「手」「書」「你」「機」等,因為若掌握了這些基礎漢字,基本上就可以拼湊出生活所需一切詞句,而且符合構詞法,更易於理解,就比如上述這個詞,「構(make up)詞(word)法(way/method)」it means the method to make up words, equal to "Word-formation".

It is awesome. I know kanji from Japanese, but I can recognize patterns and their meanings. Like 友 in 友だち (friend), 冷 in 冷蔵庫 (fridge), or 女 pronounced ("onna" or "djo") for female, 時間 for time (although the kanji are slightly different), 学習 pronounced "gakushuu" (study), 兄弟 pronounced "'kyoudai" (siblings), 左 pronounced "hidari", 右 pronounced "migi", 大小 pronounced "daishou" (size), 忘 in 忘れる (to forget), etc.

Truly wonderful content, you are an amazing teacher and have a great ability to convey meanings and concepts at a easily understandable level. I wrote down everything you said in my notebook so l can review it at leisure. This has been a great help to me as an over 60s learner from Australia, xie xie

As a master student in physics, my favourite Chinese compound words are: 自转(self+spin) for intrinsic angular momentum, spin. 宇称(cosmic+measurement) for parity. 激光(stimulated light) for laser. 共振(together+vibrate)for rosonance. these words make much more sense. And my least favourite word is 铁磁性(iron+magnet+property) for ferromagnetic. In Japanese, this is been translated as 強磁性(strong magnet property) which makes more sense.

Most scientific words in Chinese were coined after the introduction of modern science from Europe, some are appropriated from ancient Chinese, and some are translated, either literally or homophonically. Guess what "鲁棒性" (stupid+cudgel/club+property) means, it is rated among the worst homophonically translated scientific words in Chinese,

@@nullptr64 yeah, i mean there are many ferromagnetic metals not just iron. so i think the word 'ferromagnetic' is not very proper.

Many Chinese characters for expressing states have been lost, but they are still preserved in Japanese kanji. These characters are the most beautiful. For example: 咲, 雫, 凪. They represent flowers blooming, raining, and wind stopping.

Great job !Only one addition to that 。"“尽头” is normally pronounced as jin(4) tou (2 second tone. I'm not sure about the reason. Probably because 头 also means “tip, end” . We say "到头来” means to the end, finally(it‘s still) eg. “到头来还不是(竹篮打水)一场空” 。 also there are like“走到头”=“走到底” “一眼看到头” example for tip“笔头” “好记性不如烂笔头” means tips of a pen,“枝头” tip of a brunch basic 头can be either of the two ends (两头) and of Course the more understandable means"top , begin" (very related to the meaning of head) 头部玩家,top player 没头没尾,here 头means begin 。 the compound words for them are 开头 and 结尾
