Liked it. Already subscribed. Good stuff. The diaphragm is 360 degrees and the back rarely gets mentioned. When I breathe with awareness, I try to start "filling the inner tube" in the back first, then the sides, finally the front (if at all -- the front is so accustomed to moving you can almost forget it for practice purposes).

Agreed. Even with singers of contemporary styles of music, I generally have them focus on getting more sideways and back expansion because that's not as 'natural' for them (usually because they've trained themselves to focus only on forward belly protrusion and have habituated that action).

Excellent video. Yoga and voice teachers often talk about belly breathing, but I have often said that I could move my belly without it being connected to anything. Trying to do it just felt like manufacturing a useless movement. I love how you addressed and explained that. Thank you for the exercise to address this.

I'm so very glad, very happy and joyous to have found your videos. You gave your heart and passion to these videos. I've longed for information from vocal coaches, but they are difficult to find, and reading from a book doesn't help too much. It seems to me, in modern time now. Not many vocal coaches are willing to give away "secrets", and that just cringe me to no end. I understand that they need to pay rent and so on. It is understandable. However, being paid for secrets that is known by a certain group whom was taught, then exclusively hold that information for money of an artistic form, it just doesn't sit right with me. Although again, understandable. So when you appear in these videos, with that smile, with those eyes, with that passion. your thoughts are like "I want you guys to have the information, becasue singing is awesome!" I feel like that's your first priority, as a true mentor. and i thank-you so much. because there are so many nuances that is needed to be known, so vocalist do not harm their voice as they continue their journey. not all can use our cash from our real job to pay coaches for their "secrets". if we did, we would hire coaches...for their live feedbacks, not for their secrets... those "secrets" are just techniques, that should be shared amongst the vocalist community, as any artistic community propel and strengthen one another to refinement. so thank-you..so much...

Thank you for this great video....I have one question. I read on your website that the best breathing technique is the Appoggio technique. However for singers who dance or move around alot eg. Beyonce or Chris Brown...how is it possible for them to maintain the posture required for the Appoggio technique? Looking forward to your response...thank you

HI! I think I get the same effect by getting my students to center their weight on the balls of their feet rather than on the heels. It works really well for me as in this posture the core gets engaged upto a point so the muscles you speak of move move freely. Is this an ok practice to continue? Also, Thank you so much for all you do. I learn so much from you!

Hi! The muscles in my neck seem to be in a constant state of tension (even when I'm not singing) and have felt this way for some time. It all started when I was singing one day and suddenly felt this clench of tension in my throat and it hasn't been right ever since ... that was 2 years ago!! Any advice?
