EXPAT LIVING IN THE PHILIPPINES. (ARE YOU MENTALLY PREPAIRED?)

Living in the Philippines is a true blessing, it comes with some baggage. Let me explain, going from a job that consisted of 70+ hours a week to a paradise with no direction is very exciting for the first few months. Then- it wears off; you find yourself slipping into lazy mode. Gaining wight and not doing what you thought in your head before the "great" move.
Plan your move with a second and third hobby. Something to fall back on to keep your mind busy.
Don't thank me now, get over seas and figure it out. Thank me later. lol

My hubby retired having been corporate and commuting for 40 years it was pretty hard for him for 12 mths as he adjusted to managing his own time. He was used to having a PA and expected me to serve that function (big surprise I wasn’t going to do that!) we realised gradually that he was institutionalised…it took awhile to transition to his new life. Now he’s busy and happy- he learnt to play Saxophone and joined a Sax band, he’s got walking mates, plus he plays Golf. His most recent hobby is Archaeological Digs… and has made lots of buddies. Several of these things were never on his retirement list… so be open to new things. He’s now also really into cooking, who knew that would happen?!

That’s the word “institutionalized”… It’s been a year and things sure have changed-just loving life to its fullest. I’m living life-instead of giving my life to the company. Thank you so much for all your comments, I’ll take them to heart. Take care

Hi Dave, I've been a lifelong Naturalist, and I have plenty to keep me from being bored. I can drive up to the Taal volcano, walk into the jungle near our house, go to a Nat'l Park a couple of hours away and converse with some wild monkeys. We have all kinds of critters come into our yard, and the gecko's always call to me in the late afternoon. I have five dogs that always keep me entertained. Life is good here. I'm still trying to find the names of all the plants we have here on our property. My wife keeps bringing in more plants from the jungle.

Appreciate your comment. Takes time to twist the mind set of modern convenience to having too much time on my hands. I'm truly enjoying the small adventures that I'm starting to do. I've been keeping busy finding new things to do compared to western culture. Take care

I am well-travelled and also fairly well experienced, having worked in Europe, the US, Asia and Africa. I retired to the Philippines at 52 with my Filipina wife and our son. We met in HK and started a family, bought property in the Philippines and established a constant and significant source of income before moving here permanently, so I was not exactly jumping into the unknown. We had previously spent extended periods of time here anyway and I had taken my wife to Europe and the US as well as other Asian destinations. Re. getting lazy, I steer clear of that path by walking at least 10km a day. I will not drive even though we have a few cars/motorbikes. My diet is primarily vegetarian, not from any holier-than-thou perspective, simply a health issue. That is my choice. Ultimately, I just don't like meat and the Philippines is replete with alternatives. My wife still stuffs herself with as much pork and chicken as she can! and if we attend a function I am not above accepting a plate of lechon or sisig simply to publicise my dietary choices, the way too many vegetarians seem to do. My single failing is that I do enjoy a few San Mig Lights every day, and the odd smoke. However, I miss talking crap with my mates and meeting up with a few of my American friends to take in an NFL fixture, something we did regularly in HK, much to the chagrin of our respective partners/wives. (I am a Brit but I got hooked on football years ago).

Hey, new subscriber. Just found your channel and like it so far. I've just retired early and have been seriously looking into PH for a year or two. One of the things I was worried about was finding most expats are still spewing political bullshit and still just negative all the time when that's exactly one of the reasons I want out. I just want to live a peaceful happy, positive life with happy, positive friendly people. I hope I can find it and finish my time out on this planet like that. I feel like you may have done it so that's encouraging, thanks.

@@Patrick-oy6er It’s up to the individual and how they want to spend life. You can find plenty of expats that talk politics every single day over here. I stay away from it and enjoy the simple life with my wife and her family. It’s a great feeling to detach from institutional behavior. PH is a great place-Come visit and enjoy this beautiful country. Get yourself culture shocked and stay away from the negative westerners. lol Thanks for the comment. If I can help in anyway just send a message. Take care

thanks for posting.. prior to the big move most guys think total retirement 'll be great in a tropical paradise.. but 2 or 3 months after you've figured out comfortable daily living, ones ego usually reminds you that you're now insignificant.. you're no longer what you were for a few decades,, and if you don't find a purpose,, you'll likely suffer mentally, physically, and emotionally..

I know you’re not looking for advice but seems to me you’ve chosen the life of a provider for a young family. This happens to a lot of expats who started out looking for a good relationship as they tend to come live where their Filipinas family lives. Samar is very provincial as well which sounds romantic until you live there and as you noted you find out there’s not a lot to do. So you’ve chosen the life of a provider in the province. So that’s should be your focus. How do you help raise these boys into quality men. What can you teach them? What activities can you do with them? Etc. I’ve already told my Filipina we’re going to live where I choose to live, away from family, and somewhere not remote. Yes I foresee that becoming an issue but I just can’t do what you’re trying to do. You should be applauded I’m in no way judging. You’ve made your choices so maybe time to double down on it (or find a new place to live). You’re a family man, man. 😊

Great video. Boredom/sitting around waiting to die is my one concern with retirement, and wondering personally when, or even if I'll ever be able to pull the trigger. How's the infrastructure where you are in regards to internet reliability, electricity, etc.? I'd like to possibly work in a Telehealth environment if possible to stay active, engaged, etc. when I "retire" but it seems like infrastructure in a lot of places makes that a difficult proposition.

@ericg9092 Cebu, has some great areas to live and keep you busy. Plus it has a lot of western culture/foods compared to where I live. I’m in western Samar, not a big city at all. Wi-Fi is good and power doesn’t seem to be a big problem. It’s usually listed if power is going to be interrupted and we pack up and head to the beach for the day. Come over be adventurous/travel and enjoy a few times before you pull the trigger. It gets better every day, as I’m adjusting and loving life. Take care Thanks for the comment/question.

I'm working on the mental preparation ! -- ? -- Now what ? - - - I liked the 'sound' of the "good life" for the 4 of you - on $1200 -- $1500 / mo. !!! -- Should allow a decent "life" for - just me - on my $1500 SS alone ? Sounds like ?..... -- - -- - -- I can see me buying a 3 wheel tuk tuk just to explore all around the Tagaytay area and Taal lake. Temps are cooler @ 2,000 ft and I like "comfortable" rather than needing a shower all the time ?!? -- Beautiful scenery waterfalls farms even a trip to Batangas - and perhaps ferry to Puerto Galera ? Just explore.
