An expatriate seems to be a job that requires a large amount of diligence and education. I appreciate the way the video illustrated this through the Core Characteristics section and the Training section. For me, the Training section perfectly shows the way that arising barriers (Cultural, Training, & Practical) are countered to ensure the job runs smoothly.

Before watching this video I was unaware of what expatriate management was. I think this is very valuable information to have if you have the desired to work internationally. It also shows that it is important to learn about the cultural differences if you want to be a successful expatriate. I think this would be a great learning experience because you would have the opportunity to learn how different cultures work.

As a business student I find this video very informative and entertaining. Before watching this video I didn't know anything about expatriate management but, after I did I feel like I learned a lot. This video gave a lot of insight on expatriate management. It was surprising to see that spouse/family issues adjusting was the main reason so many of these managers fail. The culture shock of moving to a new country for business is one I think so many overlook or don’t take seriously when considering these jobs. I’ve also never thought about the compensation differences that might be needed for these positions as far as premiums and taxes. I appreciate the way it was all broken down in this video to help truly see the extensive behind the scenes work that goes on when hiring expatriate managers

This video directly conveys the important attributes that are sought in an expatriate. How often does expatriate management occur within a multinational corporation over management from individuals in their host nation? It is interesting that there is implicit and complicit cognitive bias for expatriate management, and this video relays that concept well.

I appreciate the emphasis on the necessity of being well-rounded in all areas of self-orientation, others-orientation, perceptual ability, and cultural toughness when it comes to being successful as an expatriate. While we may not have strengths in each of these areas when evaluating whether to be an expatriate or not, it's helpful to analyze which areas are our strengths and our weaknesses so we can best prepare before hand and train and grow in our weaknesses before simply going to be an expatriate.

Also, it was interesting to understand the rewards expatriate managers receive for the sacrifices they are willing to make. This video was very informative of the many factors that come into play when selecting an expatriate manager. It can be very difficult to select the proper candidate for these jobs because of the risk of turn-over. It is justifiable that self-orientation is a core characteristic of an expatriate manager. One of the major causes of turn-over in these assignments is family issues. A manager in this position would need to have a very high self-esteem in order to be successful in this role, because it is likely that it could cause strain on the individual's family.

It's good to know that many corporations include the family in training and support for adapting to foreign culture. These things can considerably reduce an already stressful situation of starting a new job, in a new country. Helping to acclimate the family is a huge weight off the expatriate. It also helps the company entice workers to take the leap of faith to take on a foreign assignment.

I have always been interested in living in another country and it always seemed like the best way to do so would be with a job where I was transferred out of the US. However, it is always a concern when moving that there will be some isolation, so I thought it was very interesting that part of the practical training is becoming involved with an expatriate community. It makes sense because a lonely and unhappy manager is probably less effective, so cultural integration would be a good investment for the company as well. This video placed a more practical lens on the dream of living and working internationally. I also found the characteristics of empathy, strong communication, and high self esteem that expatriate managers should have very interesting because they seem incredibly important in domestic business as well. Thanks for an interesting video!

I found this video informational and helpful for someone who dreams of entering the international business. Something I found interesting is how many companies will pay for the expatriate's child(ren) education. At first, that sounded sort of odd to me, but when one thinks about the locations of the expatriate's family is placed, it makes sense how the public school education may not the be best or less than the standards the child(ren) is used to in their home country. Another thing I didn't know is how the expatriate is usually required to pay taxes for both home and host country. Overall, this is an excellent video and gives insight into expatriate management.

It is interesting to learn that one of the reasons for expatriate failure is the inability of the manager's spouse/family to adjust to a foreign environment. Given this, the importance of cross-culture transition is crucial to the success and job performance of the expatriate. It is excellent to learn that firms have noticed this issue and produced a training guideline that includes families participating in cultural training to ease culture shock.

Prior to this video, I was unfamiliar with the concept of "expatriate management". The Performance Appraisal section was interesting to me, as it made sense how one would have bias based on their own expectations or even lack of experience towards expatriate managers. The compensation package section made it easy to understand how exactly an expatriate would get compensated in order for them to live comfortably.

What I found interesting about Expatriate management was the core characteristics required for someone to become a good expatriate. I believe that it is one of those things that, to be a good expatriate, one needs to have 4/4 qualities to be successful. I think only have 2-3 out of the 4 qualities would be result in a failure to adapt or be successful in the business being conducted. Which is why I think that aspect contributes to the extra compensations for expatriates, alongside the potential separation of family members for prolonged periods.

This video interested me because I work with a few expatriate workers and i hadn't considered all that went into it. I'd assumed that they were treated almost exactly the same and that they would have to do much of the cultural training themselves. There are many more differences than I'd thought. For example, companies often pay more for expatriate workers than domestic workers to make up for the fact that they have to move as well as the fact they may be taxed twice.

I will be honest I was not familiar with "Expatriate Management" until watching this video. Training is a major part of becoming an expatriate management. There are many downfalls such as being away from family or your spouse, and trying to adapt to another culture as well. Thats why I believe that training is the most vital part of this process. It is also not easy to learn a different language, I am currently learning Italian for another class of mine. There is the struggle of being able to read and write a language but speaking it, and even trying to learn it quickly must be a difficult task.

I did not realize that an expatriate is someone who lives outside of their native country while an Immigrant is someone who comes to live permanently in another country. While both could apply to anyone that lives outside their 'native' country, the difference is that being an expatriates carries a more positive connotation than it does to be an immigrant.

I never considered the qualifications and core characteristics needed for expatriate. The core characteristics make sense considering you would be moving to a new country, having to make new friends, understand a new language/cultural differences, etc. I also never thought about the extra pay for expatriate managers. I always assumed the new experience and location to be the extra pay but I now understand the extra pay is for compensation for having to learn new languages, going thru training, etc.

I learned a lot about expatriates and how much training is involved. I didn’t realize how much training his dependent on the company rather than the expatriate. Being an expatriate seems like a big investment and risk for both the company and expatriate, because the expatriate has to uproot their lives, and the company has to manage their expatriates from afar.

The biggest thing that this video misses is personality traits. Companies often overlook an individuals personality and whether or not they are suited to a particular position. If you want to send someone who won't be overwhelmed with culture shock make sure they are high in openness along with other qualifying traits. Someone could be a great manager in their home country because they are very conscientious and make sure everything is going smoothly all the time; but they may also have a low tolerance to change. The big 5 personality test has the most statistically significant predictions of personality differences. I think this should be the very first step in choosing someone for this type of role.

It makes sense that it is hard to get people to transfer to many other countries. Lower wages, housing, and language barriars are huge issues that end up costing many firms lots of money. Many companies have moved facilities to other countries to save money, so I imagine only the most successful companies even make the effort to hire expatriates.

I heard the term "expatriate" for the first time a while ago on a video about workers in Dubai, and I wondered the difference between that term and "immigrant." It's good to learn that expatriate refers to workers temporarily working within a host country. I can only imagine how difficult is is to move from your home country to a foreign one to work (depending on the host country I suppose). Nonetheless, I don't know if I would take the opportunity if I were offered. It would be a tough decision!

Unfortunately, my brain made the connection of the show "Emily in Paris" and this video. The main character goes to Paris and the shows gives multiple examples about her lack of understanding of the culture. To put it more specifically; I now know she was lacking pretty much all the core characteristics. An expatriate would have to be very good with change and adapting quickly in a positive manor.
