I have lost count the number expats that have ruined their lives because of a girl. Guys, stop making a girl your reason for retiring to Southeast Asia. Place a higher value on yourself than that. Golden Rule; having been an expat in Asia on and off for years. NEVER invest your own money in someones else's house or business It is not in your name and you have no rights, no matter how friendly everyone is. After many years you are still basically a tourist, even 20 years later. Keep your money in your OWN country.

It is not a regular person who ups and moves to another country, so lots of these expats are interesting (though some are "interesting" but not in a good way and should just be avoided). Many people talk about moving, but MOST cannot pull the trigger and just waste your time with idle talk that never happens. Sorry to hear about the guy from New York. So much knowledge and experience built up over decades and then suddenly it's all gone. Can't believe those ignorant people interrupting your interview with their trivial nonsense, and then one getting an attitude when you stop him. Lastly, it upsets me to see people with such selfishness to have a partner and not set them up with anything when you pass on. The guy probably never gave it a thought and the lady is indeed in a worse position than if she never met him, plus older and less likely to find another partner.

As a young Airman at my first base in 1988, the NCOs told me NOT to date a Fillipino women unless I wanted to fund their whole family. I heeded their advice! and stayed away! Looking back, it was the best move I ever made!

Sir, love your stories - I first came to Philippines in 1977, age 37, was 3 years divorced, got off the plane, fell in love with the place - 1979 met a Filipina girl through correspondence, wrote for a year, came over, met, got married, lasted 8 years, split - decided to come back and meet another one - was grocery shopping in the supermarket and met a Fiipina friend who had a Filipino guy with her, she had told him my story and he asked me if I would like to meet a Filipina whom he knew - anyway, long story short, 34 years together, 25 years married, retired now 10 years in the Philippines - purchased a simple 3 brm, 2 story house in a guard gated community, only 10 minutes down expressway to San Fernando City Pampanga - became Philippine Resident after 6 months, so don't have to go out of the country annually, live comfortably on my pension, drive our own sub-compact car, everywhere, once there are no longer lockdown restrictions ! - love the place - don't want to go anywhere out of the country - they are going to bury me here

This is by far the best video, that I have ever watched, and probably ever will. You talked about yourself, with out hiding around the bush! You also talked about what other people experienced. I did the same thing in Thailand 2002, about what you talked about at the beginning of your video about leasing land and investing in a bar and Restaurant in a Thai name. That is exactly what happened to me in Chiangmai , Thailand in 2002. Actually I thought you were talking about me, except my miss fortune came the same way , but in Thailand.

RULE 1: NEVER have a shared account RULE 2: DO Keep YOUR money in your own country, and just transfer enough to live on RULE 3: NEVER marry, especially somebody who already has kids, you will be used to extract as much money from as possible, including paying for loans taken out by your wife's relatives to pay for numerous bithdays, hospital bills, resorts and funerals resulting from uncontrolled drinking, lazy guys, obesity and bad diet. RULE 4: NEVER EVER buy property or land ( It does not matter what the law states ) you will be LEFT without a cent and then blamed by her and the family... RULE 5: CHECK her ID, do a background check, NEVER rush into a relationship and USE your brain not your middle leg BEFORE doing anything - RULE 6: Remember you are a foreigner in the Philippines and behave in a respectful manner - You don't have a right to dictate your own culture to the Filipinos, or complain, as you are the person who made the choice to live here

At first I "loaned" money to relatives, who would instantly go silent and not return my calls... money never repaid... why don't they ask "give" instead of "borrow"? I worked my fkn butt off for 50 years, going without alcohol or parties or pointless spending sprees, so why should I "loan" money to people who waste that money on alcohol and drunken parties the moment I give money for a supposed "new business"? DON'T give money to any Filipina who claims to be starving or needs a load for their phone. Nobody is starving in the Philippines because their family will always help them. A Filipina true in heart doesn't want your money, she wants you for love. If you start giving money to a Filipina you meet for any reason, even to help them out as a friend they will expect more. NEVER base your relationship, especially at the the very beginning on money because you will lose.

My brother lived in Japan while I was in the Philippines. We compared notes. Japanese are polite but not friendly to foreigners, but they are very honest. Filippino's are very friendly but could be picking your pocket while joking with you. We would catch students stealing from our store and next day they would be back as if nothing had happened with no shame at all.

It is not entirely based on the Philippines' economic state that there are lots of dishonest people. Japan has experienced World War-related devastation and certain dire situations but never did they resolve to dishonesty, prostitution, and unscrupulous behavior. They kept their integrity intact. These are great stories! Tragic, but real. I feel like vloggers are always aggressively selling us on how great the PH is and we don't get a balanced picture of what it's like. I lived there between 1998-2002 and left when the economy tanked in 2002-2003. Your advice is excellent and everyone should take 2 points away. One is not to trust ANYONE in the Philippines until you know them a very long time, and especially anyone who you don't know where they live or who their family are. Second is that you do not go to 3rd world countries to get rich, you go there when you are already financially secure. Another point would be don't look for girls in bars, go to small towns and find a girl who is not spoiled or to street smart. You will get a better quality person that way. I'm married to a Filipina and have 25 yrs of Filipino family life and everything you said is dead on.

There’s one group of expats in the PI that are mostly unknown and are financially stable and have no problems. I know a few. Guys who were in the military stationed in the Philippines back in the 80’s and 90’s and married locals. Went back to the states. Both worked and have pensions, social security and savings. Build really nice homes and enjoy life.

I'm retired Army and I had never been to Asia. The thing about military people is they're extremely adaptable. I had no problems moving here in 2007 after doing a recon in 2006. A retired Marine turned me on to the Philippines in 2004/2005. My original plan was Mexico, but I got priced out. I retired from the Army in '95 and moving to the Philippines was a good decision.

I wish I had a nickel for every sad story like these. I spent a lot of time in the Philippines while in the Navy from 1969 to 1973. Of all the countries I've spent time in, the P.I. is the worst if you are expecting any kind of ethics in business. If you can think of all the ways things can go wrong, it will turn out just that way. Even if you find a great woman, she is not going to go against their family. If you're happy living a very modest life you might do well. But show any sign of money in the bank, a pension, social security, etc., someone will take advantage of your relative naivete.

A fellow club member in the Manila Harley Davidson club had his house taken from him. His Filipina wife of 25 years whom he met in the US and lived with in the US, they decided to retire in the Philippines. Built a house together in the Pi, moved there. One day he was out on a ride with the group and when he returned home all the doors were locked and the locks changed out. Short story is that he had to move in with another club member until he got back on his own two feet.

Not only you guys who go to the Phillipines, my two experiences are one from a Filipino builder who set himself up in Queensland, hired him for major renovations as I had traveled to the the Phillipines in the past and thought I would give the him the opportunity, not only did he rip me off with the deposit ignoring the rules of the Queensland Building Association rules QBSA, but continued to produce non compliant work for final approval. When I told him I would be holding back funds until the work was rectified, he started throwing furniture around and threatened to break in overnight and tear down everything he had done. I will never employ his like again. No. 2 My 30 year old son engaged with a girl online for two years from the Philippines, both had traveled well, she was a housekeeper on a luxury cruise line. Soon after she arrived in Australia she started making demands for my son to buy a house, I told my son to take his time, get to know this girl this better... she soon moved on and found herself a 55 year old boyfriend to meet her needs. End of the story is my son found a beautiful Australian girl pure of heart with no agenda.

This video is great because it makes me think of all the things to avoid when constructing my own life. From this video, I got that health is majorly important. And second is to keep some distance from women! It seems like a man ends up paying for allowing a woman or her family to take advantage over the man . Its tricky to find a good relationship where you dont end up financially ruined. Make sure you select the right one and also dont give her too much undeserved power. Mark, very informative video. Living in Thailand, I have seen the exact same incidents of guys living beyond their means, eventually losing everything for one reason or another. Often times due to meeting a young lady and blowing everything on them, very sad. Hopefully, you have saved at least one fellow considering making a move to Asia from making a life changing mistake. I was in the Philippines in Summer 2019. Everything was going just great. But COVID, followed by travel restrictions, followed by the hurricane destruction was going to cause nothing but misery. Look at Reekay’s channel. He had a choice: suffer in the Philippines or come back to California. He returned home, and now he can’t simply return to the Philippines- especially if he refuses the vaccine. Philippines may not allow unvaccinated tourists for 5 years. The Filipina he left behind is probably getting slawed-out by some dude in his absence. That story probably repeats itself across expats unfortunately. I absolutely see how an expat could be jaded and miserable if they were stuck in Cebu or another inexpensive, unsophisticated province far from the city. It’s a great place to visit, but you wouldn’t want to live there. Disaster prone and isolated from good medical, financial and logistical support.

The summary of this video: woman are the same everywhere, and the support laws for your "ex" are as bad in the Philippines as they are in the US. Moral of the story: don't get married, don't let your girlfriend own your house or your business, and don't have kids. Pretty much the same as the US. Keep your money in your home country. BTW, if you ARE wanting to set up a business in the Philippines, you need to set aside at least $5,000 to talk to a GOOD lawyer in a major city about how to do it. You can't be the 100% owner, but there are ways to effectively secure control of the business through trusts and other complex arrangements. But they require a knowledge of the law that requires you to pay up.

Just ask one of the major accounting firms in a big city for recommendations of a good business lawyer with tax knowledge--they will tell you people THEY know and work with, doing your due diligence for you. Remember, a MAJOR accounting firm--preferably one of the Big 4. Get at least three recommendations, and then interview them, asking specifically about the recent business structures they've done. Also ask about pros and cons of various structures, and tax law pitfalls. Anyone who knows the tax laws well is likely going to be very skilled. Same here in the US. After the interviews you'll get a very good feel for who knows his stuff. Be prepared to have to pay for the interviews. Again, it's going to cost you some bucks, but it will be money VERY well spent vs. you winging it.

Find a large popular builder that can mortgage your loan (without the wife knowing). Now when she dumps you, and she will, just stop the mortgage payments. The company gets back the house and keeps your deposit ( a win for them) and wife gets nothing. Yes you lose your deposit but at least you didn't lose the entire cost of the house. Spread that mortgage over decades to be safe.

I think (hope) I'm doing it right. I'll have about 2900 a month after taxes in pension income and shoule be about 400 grand in 400k money. No long distance thing for me. If I meet someone there, good. If not, well that's good too. A small place and a motorbike and I'll be happy. A lot of guys are really lacking in common sense and experience when a pretty girl smiles at them and gives them attention. It may turn out great, but it might also be your downfall. Focus on a person's character. If their character is not top notch, when things get tough their claimed ethics go out the window. I really hope that some guys will learn a thing or two from the experiences of others and be able to avoid some very bad things. Us older guys are trying to educate the newer ones coming after us. Please listen for your own sakes and think about what you have heard and read as you mingle with the lovely ladies. You can literally lose everything you have. Choose the right one and you will be greatly rewarded. Last thing, watching how people treat others will tell you a lot. How do they treat restaurant servers, maids, kids, even pets like dogs. One of your best dialogs, filled with great advice for these would be geriatric Romeo's. I watch a lot of video's where guys go on and on about how they can live in the P.I for $500 US. These guys are living a fantasy, if a medical problem comes up then they become youtube beggars. For these geriatric Romeo's having kids with a younger Philipina nothing wrong with that. Just make sure that you can leave her on a secure financial footing, upon your passing. If I was leaving behind a child of mine in the Philippines, I would make sure that the child would not want for anything. I would have an understanding with my adult children in the USA, to make sure that that my wishes are taken care of. As a responsible man I could not let a child of mine grow up in poverty in the Philippines. My parting gift to the child would be the greatest gift that I can give, a USA citizenship.
