I applaud Paul for his good heart. This is a must-see for future expats to deter them from giving Filipina girlfriends and their families money. Their poor living conditions is something they're used to and they die happy because being poor is normal to many of them. Building them a house isn't the boyfriend's responsibility and even if it's not asked for shouldn't be given since it is never a guarantee for a stable relationship. Expensive dinner in dating, even cellphones are okay but even then, if a girlfriend asks for a cellphone, laptop, anything that is money, red flag is as clear as the sun.

I have been traveling to the Philippines for 16 years and lived over there as a young American guy. I tried a few businesses and dated around. BEST advice I can give anyone thinking about going over there... Go with the intention of spending no money or as little money as possible no matter what. Also, do not move in with ANYONE, not with locals, foreigners, girlfriends or anything of the such. Keep your personal life separate. People with little or no money will do what they can to drain your pockets in any part of the world.

Exactly!!! My stomping grounds are Colombia. I have a woman that I date in Colombia who asked me for money 1 time when she was robbed along with her girlfriends during the protest that were going on, she still didn't ask me to buy her a phone. Ironically I have a friend who is originally from Mexico who asked me for $200 for food for her and her kids. I gave it freely, 2 weeks later she asked for $300 for food. I told her that I have a freezer full of food and full cabinets and that she is can have as much as she wants. She said I want to go to Costco. I didn't respond. She was never like this before, but I got a 6 figure job 2 months ago and she has become a parasite. She also just found out that her 17 year old daughter was raped by one of her boyfriends when she was 11 years old. I asked her, why did you move your kids in with this man? She responded "because he said that he would take care of me and pay for everything." She still has not told her 20 year old something son what happened to his sister. I think this friendship is done.

@@2000ViperGTSsubscribe Why not? He wanted to be with her and a woman expects a man to support protect and guide. She might have had feelings for hom but his passive weak behavior was an extreme turn off to her and almost all women. A self directed man would have used that$30 k to get extablished and create an income stream. Start a business or invest for example. I moved to another country 21 years ago and did not know the language and had no work permit but started a business in a field I did not have any experience and it was successful. He had 5 times more capital than I did. I had a spare $13,000 one quarter and invest in Telsa at $58/share. I was not an investor in stocks but that seemed like mad money and I believed in the company mission. If it failed I would not have gone hungry. My intuition paid off well, with stock splits and great growth that initian capital is $930,000. That is an extreme case and I have no invested in any other stocks. The point is be in control of your life and not passively allow life to control your life. REgardless of the money, woman are naturally attracted to men who are their own captains. That has been a genetic predisposition of women since humans evolved. As the child bearer she seeks men who are protective, supportive and provide guidence. A secure feeling woman is capable bonding very tightly with a man who can represent security. Men often complain that is gold digging but it is nature. If he was in control of his life, the very modest demands by her might have signalled the security that allows them to be as propor mother and wife. Only loser men complain about this natural priority females have. He thinks he was taklen advantage of but he simply failerd the test of being a competent male so it is not unexpected she has no respect for him. If he had just gotten a job or put an effort into creating an income stream, and provided leadership she might still interedted in him. As a Filipino, I feel the need to caution foreigners who plan to marry a Filipina. It's unfortunate, but I believe that the majority of Filipinas from poor to lower-middle-class backgrounds are primarily interested in foreigners for their financial resources. It's important to be aware of red flags, such as frequent requests for money. If you notice this behavior, it's best to distance yourself from her and leave..lol. While there may be some Filipinas who are primarily interested in foreigners for their money, there are also many wonderful and genuine Filipinas out there who are looking for love and companionship. If you do happen to find a legitimate and trustworthy Filipina, it can be like hitting the jackpot. So, while it's important to be cautious and aware, it's also important to keep an open mind and heart.

Paul, I really admired the way you conducted yourself through this interview with John. You showed empathy and sympathy and a huge amount of respect throughout your interview. You withheld judgment when it was so tempting to judge. I’m so disappointed that John still doesn’t appear to have learned any lessons from his ongoing experiences. I have thought about living in the Philippines for several years but never chose to because I didn’t have an income until my retirement. How does one help a person that shows every indication of going and doing the bad things over and over again. This is also mathematically and logically sound. How can a poor & serially unsuccessful person be of help to others? Why would others defy their logic and common sense and seek help from an unsuccessful person. Even animals would know to go where there is plenty of food and water instead of wasting their energy on places where there is a scarcity of both. "...ever since I don't I don't have any money, anymore, I don't matter..." That's EXACTLY the situation I found myself in. My brother-in-law went from being best man at my wedding, to, years later, punching my 8-year old daughter in the face and attacking me with bamboo sticks, rocks and a hammer. My mother-in-law went from "loving" me, to telling me not to call her "mum" anymore. Not just thrown out of the family (by this time, my wife was living with a new Filipino boyfriend - and pregnant to him - and her siblings and parents were all singing from the same hymn sheet..."Go back to your country...and don't think that we will allow you to take (my daughter.)" The reason was obvious. If I left my daughter behind, they knew I would send money, every two weeks. The long and short of it was that, at my lowest moment (violent and abusive in-laws, a cheating wife and just 20 pesos to my name,) I made a decision that I WOULD return to my country and, if necessary, would smuggle my daughter out. As I saw it, even the worst life with me, in my country, would be better than the best life my little girl could expect to experience if she stayed with them. I won't bore you with the details but, thanks to the pandemic draining finances of all expats, my country's government FINALLY decided to help the stranded return home. In addition to securing flights, they even threw in a one-off loan for living expenses, being the equivalent of 105,000 pesos. What I can say, 22 months after our escape is that my daughter has never been happier. She loves going to school, now that she doesn't have to share the classroom with 48 other kids (when the room has only 30 desks!) She eats what she wants and, even though we would be considered as being below the poverty line, here - we live like millionaires compared to what we went through, back there. With that said, I am NOT down on the Philippines, or with Filipino people. I love the country and most people are great - helpful, friendly, curious and kind. Indeed, the godmother of my child INSISTED on sending us money, one Friday evening - so we could eat on the weekend - despite me not asking her to help us. Later, I discovered she had wired the money from her hospital bed, where she was because of a heart condition. There were many others, like her, who were impressed that a foreigner was willing to endure hardship, in order to raise a Filipino-born child, that its Filipino mother had, effectively, abandoned. I should say, I also came back to no family. It's me and my young daughter, starting from scratch (and I am older than John.) Never give up hope. Best of luck. And thank you for sharing your story.

We have built a property business together and I am glad that I listen to her and invested when I did. She is older, beautiful, wiser with many years of life experience. She is now retiring and we will travel between countries. It must be for love and nothing else. This man is weak, naive and simple and this family saw him for what he is and decided to exploit him. When you're a 60 year old man and having sex with a 19 year old, there's a big problem there. It's all his fault that he's broke. He chose to pay for a young woman's affections/sex and lost everything that he had and unfortunately, I don't think he even really understands what happened to him and why and is bound to repeat the same behavior with he same female or another.

Interesting how they almost never can find a woman to fall in love with in other countries that is in their 30s/40s/50s when they are pushing 60+. Nope. Always just seems to happen that the 20s and younger “women” (girls) are the ones they keep meeting and getting into relationships with. Then it’s “poor me, they took advantage of me!” No, pal. You wanted young 🐱 and when you’re 3x their age, that costs money. Keep it 💯. No 19 year old woman wants someone broke & in their 50s.

This certainly is a good cautionary tale for those of us who are considering retirement overseas. So much can go wrong and without friends or family nearby, you can end up in a very bad situation. Sadly, elderly expats ending up homeless is not unique and there are no services available for expats if they run into financial hardship. Hopefully John is in a better position now but this really is a hard lesson that all of us should take very seriously.

Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam etc.etc. first rule is your to stabilize yourself first and only then can you have an idea of bringing a partner into your life. That means knowing exactly how much money it takes for you to live in a way that you find comfortable and how much more you are willing to spend to add someone else into the mix. Women 20,30 or 40 years younger than you don't get involved with you because you're the love of their live, it's about the security you can provide them and in Asia, their families too

An old story, watching with someone who would love to move here. Great educational vid. I have built a house here, and everyone absolutely loved me as i paid them... out of the process i learned that here you are a financial source... when the finances end, your relationships will change. The filipinos are a great people, they are resilient and strong. They got along fine before i arrived, and will be fine when i am gone. Money will not fix the issues, as the mentality generally is use everything today, tomorrow never comes.. Great education... sadly reinforces the fact that learning is lost on some... A woman's affections that includes her getting money for sex/love is not be confused with love... the 'john' who hopes that will change is lost...

That's like looking at a severe alcoholic and saying hey who hasn't ever drank a little too much? It's not the same thing. John has an extreme problem It's bad enough he put himself in this situation but the most disturbing part is that he said he would do it again. He would build that house again. He has little regrets. He would still get into a relationship with that young girl who us talking to other guys online and lied about having a child because he says she's a good girl. He has learned little to nothing from his ordeal. How do you help someone who can't or won't help themselves? And by help I don't mean get a job or make money. I mean just simply learning his lesson and not making the same mistake again. If I knew someone was managing his money for him and ensuring he spent it on necessities for him and the twins he irresponsibly fathered I would donate. But to give this man money directly would be a waste. I have no faith he would make good decisions with the money. Which is sad to say about a nearly 60 year old man.

We aren't being asked to support him for life just accept him as a guy in a spot and give him a boost. The world is full of people who don't have good judgment, but he's far from his home turf and can't be employed. That's enlightening. A couple of my takeaways: - Solve the income question *before* leaving. Don't assume teaching or whatever else will work out - try it out first. - If a girl says she's into you, make sure that's it's not for your money. I'd tell her straight up that I'm not rich and cannot afford to support either her family or to invest in family property or business. If she still follows you after that, she's actually into you. Quite clearly he is in love with the facade that girl projected back when he had money, and not the actual person he has in front of him.

You're a good man Paul. Your empathy really showed through. Bad decisions lead to homelessness in America, the decision to drink, to do drugs, to quit jobs, and yes fail to live within a budget. It's no different in most countries. I'm not clear on how much of his problem is a natural gullibility and how much is sequelae from the stroke. It's a very sad story, but you handled it about as well as could be done. I was in his position 10 years ago, broke, unable to find a job that paid enough to live, another victim of the Mortgage Crisis and underhanded State Human Resource workers. One month from becoming homeless I found an English teaching job at a University in China. I had to leave my 11yo son, borrow the money for a one-way ticket to China from my ex-wife, and hope nothing went wrong. Except for missing my son it was the best 7 years of my life. Met many new friends, had beautiful Chinese girlfriends, and enjoyed teaching ten times more than teaching in America. Took Social Security at 62 but continued to work in China until 66. The adventures in China will be some of my best memories. His timing for Medical problems was unfortunate. I suffered the same symptoms transiently in China but didn't have a stroke until two weeks after I returned home. I recovered fully, but as you say "But for the grace of God there go I".
