I have the Royal overdrive and a Revival drive , I find them quite great pedals but there is something quite special indeed about the Royal overdrive. Winner hands down for me.

I've owned the original RevivalDrive Custom, the Compact and now have the Hot Rod. The Hot Rod is amazing, and it is correct in that the Compact did not have enough gain. The Hot Rod really does a great job.

Hey Tom! Yeh, I'm rarely using all the gain, but it's nice to have it there if needed on the Hot Rod init!

If your looking for the Dumble tone go with the Royal Drive But If you want a Truckload of incredible amps from the 1940s all the way up to the 1980s and be able to reproduce there signature sounds of these amps at there extreme high volume levels at slightly above conversation volume levels, get the Revivaldrive Hotrod It will also do all of the clean and crunch tones. It sounds, breathes, is dynamic and articulate like the best tube amps from those time periods It’s just a matter of getting your head around it’s in-depth tweaking abilities, so you can come up with just about any sound you fancy, possibly even the Dumble .........but I haven’t taken it down that road Yet

The revivaldrive series to me is a literally an actual pre-amp that happens to be in a pedal enclosure. I group the revivaldrive series with things like the synergy more than I do other dirt boxes. If you're someone like me who likes to run a pre-amp but A. isn't a fan of rack mount units, B. likes to keep the amp's effects loop dedicated to modulation and time based effects, this is where the revivaldrive shines.

The Van Weelden is amazing. They have stopped making them so hold on to it.

The tiny form factor pre-amp bug got me bad. I like the little compact revivaldrive a lot and I have a bunch of the synergy stuff. Not sure its worth the money but if you want to get a few different amp sounds without getting the amps its a decent way to go. But I also rock the Kemper and have to say the digital stuff is amazing these days. We have a lot of stuff to choose from which is great.

The Royal Overdrive is jus amazing ! I had one, and off all the overdrives i have tried still have it sounded and felt the best. It just has something special i have never found in other overdrive pedals. Unfortunately It’s just too big for a compact pedalboard ,that’s why i sold it. Still miss it though….

Suggestion - for long videos (like 23 minutes) give some timestamps in the description for demo sounds. Thanks for sharing.

Some of them are worth it, some not. I think the Origin stuff is the best on the market, but Im not as keen on some of the other pricey stuff. I dunno, if I really, *really* cared about my overdrive sounding good, I'd just turn a Marshall/Trainwreck circuit up and make sure Im playing through speakers that compress a bit.

Both are great and more affordable than buying the real amps, PLUS these can be used at a reasonable sound level that the original amps CANNOT. Also, current draw is 120 miliAmps on the Revival Drive (page 16 of the manual). I didn't think it sucked enough power to require it's own breaker in the fuse panel, 🤣

Hi John. No doubt, two very nice sounding pedals, with a nice range of tones and options. I'm just curious about the sound we're hearing on your video. Are we hearing a room mic along with your direct signal? Also, is the Revival Drive a little more "noisy" for want of a better description, or is it just when you have the gain up high. Thanks for the great in-depth comparisons - I find them very useful, as I'm sure a lot of your subscribers do.

Hey, can you elaborate on your signal path after the Iridium -- XLR or 1/4 into monitors? I had an Iridium and ran it into a Line 6 PowerCab+ (both with the amp sims on and the speaker set flat and with the amp sims off and the speaker doing its digital modeling thing), and I could never get it to sound good. Great work as always. Really appreciate your honest opinions on things.

What you're hearing here is just the Iridium into the daw!

Regardless of the fact that the Revival Drive Hot Rod and the Royal Overdrive are super versatile and tweakable (and of course much different products than other regular/smaller overdrive pedals) you would personally still gravitate more to the J Rocket Dude and HRM, no? In your experience, the latter 2 are probably much easier to use as well, no?
@TCMx34 жыл бұрын
well cant speak for the Royal Overdrive but putting anything from Origin on your board is asking for back trouble lol. they are bricks (and kind of awkwardly sized for pedaltrain boards IMO)

You do get a great sound but there are so many ways to clip a signal I find it hard to imagine ever spending this sort of money to do it. Not many playing situations allow for the sound quality that's available when making videos. Quick question: How do you lose the single coil hum from your vids?
@jordanmontoya73864 жыл бұрын
sounds good, but theres a lot of clipping goin on

Hey Jordan - is that during the explanation bit where there's playing alongside the talking? Potentially I forgot to take it down to -2db to avoid clipping YT! Sorry!

@@johnnathancordy sounds spectacular as all of your demos do. You really turned me on to the versatility of the Kemper. I just ( this week ) purchased the Origin RD Hot Rod Compact overdrive and it is amazing and can get really heavy especially with an amp with with crunch already dialed in but the Royal Overdrive, consisting of over 400 parts, built like an amp not a pedal, is something quite special. I’ve been trying to purchase one for a while but I can’t find one for sale online. There is one on Reverb but it’s $100 shipping and comes from Russia which is very far from where I live in Connecticut. But the compact Revival Drive Hot Rod has one of the best clean ups I’ve ever heard. It goes from blistering gain to a perfect clean up with the turn of a volume knob. Always very impressed with hit legato technique and tasty licks.
