I appreciate the honesty coming from a singer-songwriter who was not being sponsored, but who realistically has different expectations of those two guitars. They sound DIFFERENT. That's super helpful. I can see many people being encouraged to either really appreciate what they own, or are not intimidated to write and record because their guitar isnt a $3500.00 model. I love these " inside the life of a musician" type videos. You're talking to two different audiences at once and both are incredibly meaningful and helpful.

I've lost enough hearing to notice much difference at all, maybe a more resolute bottom end on the Martin but the same sound still. Diminished hearing could be a real money saver.

I bought an orangewood Mahogany in may of 2022 based on your recommendation. It arrived with no problems and with good intonation. The factory strings did tarnish a little after 1 year. But I think that is normal for all strings with my hands. The finish on my guitar is not one hundred percent perfect, There are some imperfections in the matte Clear coat where the neck meets the body. But I do not mind at all for the price. The guitar still looks stunning to me. And the finish has held up very well. I am most impressed with the tuners. I was worried about them, but they still hold a tune better than any other acoustic that I have had. I have never had an expensive acoustic guitar. I have had some japanese made acoustic electrics, but this is my first all acoustic. I am in my 30s and have play guitar since I was 11. And I can recommend the orange wood oliver mahogany. I have been extremely impressed with it. Especially for its price. The case it comes with, it's nice also. I used your code. Mary's friends ten I don't know if it's still active but it worked for me in 2022.

Loved your song. Loved your honest comparison. I've been playing guitar "unprofessionally" for 64 years. I veered into medicine instead of music for a profession. At 74 I'm retiring from medicine and veering back into music - primarily guitar. I've purchased high end and inexpensive guitars over the years. I still play both. I learned to play on a chunk of wood with strings but my second guitar let me "feel" the music reverbrating through the guitars body into my body. That emotional link inspired me to continue. I doubt you could have written your marvelous new song on the orangewood ( You'll tell me if you think I'm wrong) but I absolutely see it's terrific value as a beginner guitar and later as a travel ax. Like people, every guitar has it's own personality. Search for one(s) that compliment yours.

Nothing wrong with the Orangewood, especially for that affordable price! I have owned my OM-28V since new in 2002. I can hear the differences. The Martin has a fuller sound with warmth and deeper lows. I was expecting the Orangewood to have the warmth because of the mahogany, but I was wrong. It's a good comparison, due to similar body style and size. Great video!

The Orangewood sounds really good, the Martin sounds better. But not $3500 worth better! If I was comparing these looking to buy one or the other, the Orangewood wins hands down! I had a similar experience comparing a Washburn acoustic to a Taylor. I ended up buying the Washburn. Actually TWO Washburn guitars, a 6 string and a 12 string, for less than the price of one Taylor 6 string. That was around 20 years ago and I still own and play both of the Washburn guitars!

Nothing wrong with inexpensive guitars… Seagull models are wildly popular. I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to have the same life span or take the same intense use as a Taylor, Gibson, Collings, Santa Cruz… But you never know.

1 second ago when you go expensive value is out the door, spend tons more for better. like a honda 25k or porsche 125k. typically high end has a reason folks are willing to spend big money. at a certain point it takes tons more money for minor improvement. like making a really fast car even faster

“Six Thousand Miles” is brilliant. I kind of heard those two guitars as complimentary, not competitive, in that tune, a woody thump in the Orangewood and a kind of crystalline yet smokey bourbon refinement from the Martin. Fantastic!

Lovely song. Much appreciated. For me, the Martin is brighter, livelier. It competes with your voice for attention. The Orangewood has a more blended, harmonious, 'melted into the background' sound. If I had a superb voice, I would probably prefer the cheaper guitar. If I was a less serious singer and the focus was on my guitar work, then the Martin would be for choice.

The Martin sounds so good and had a noticeably warmer "thump" when you hit the bridge. I really enjoyed the Orangewood, nice guitar at a very reasonable price. Playing was very enjoyable and top notch as always.

Using a mahogany top on a more cheaply made guitar is honestly a bit of a genius move. The natural compression of the hardwood balances a sound that could otherwise be warped by cut corners in other places,- not saying that is the case here, but the results speak for themselves. I'm impressed, and it looks gorgeous.

Really well made and interesting video. I have a Cole Clark that I absolutely love. Recently, in order to have a guitar when I am in the UK, I purchased a Tanglewood Crossroads. Totally different price points but I thoroughly enjoyed almost three weeks exclusively playing the Tanglewood and managed to write a couple of songs on it. Will record them next time in the UK.

50 years ago I wanted a Martin but the cost was just too high for a 22 year old at the time. The Martin at the time was around $800. I tried an Ovation which had a beautiful full, Rich sound. It was also almost $400 less. I bought the Ovation and still have it and it still sounds great. However I often wish I could've afforded that beautiful Martin. The Martin would have aged gracefully as would have the sound. Of course the Martin would now be worth a pretty penny. I don't regret buying the Ovation but I wish like hell that I could've found the money for the Martin. Thanks for the video Mary. I love the comparison of the two guitars and your final thoughts on the two.

you put orangewood on my radar and I eventually got an Oliver mahogany junior and a Brooklyn junior live (since discontinued). I LOVE the Oliver mahogany junior. just a perfect cuddle guitar. I can play so fast on it. the Brooklyn junior live is a beauty -- I hope they offer another junior like that some day. I didn't think orangewood would live up to the hype but it did. not that I'd turn down a Martin :)

Mary, you are SO GOOD! :) Through headphones, the Martin is definitely fuller, richer and so much more resonant... felt like it was projecting gently shimmering "audio snowflakes" that floated around the width of my sonic spectrum. The Orangewood had a narrower, thinner sound by comparison. On its own, it would be more than serviceable in any situation, but if you want that extra special sonic sauce (and have a pocket deep enough), it's clearly the Martin. Thanks for assembling this video!

The biggest difference I have noted over the years are the better guitars are usually more consistent in quality and sound whereas with cheaper ones, two seemingly identical guitars of the same brand and model hanging on a rack side by side can be quite different, one surprisingly good for the price and the one next to it pretty ordinary. The occasional guitar just through happenstance gets everything right and stands out, I recall playing a $700 Washburn steel string in a guitar shop back in the 70's (probably a $2500 guitar these days) that was just stunning and I regret not buying it as no Washburn I have come across since since was near as good.

I was able to play two Martin D-28 Authentic 1937 guitars, the same model year in two local shops (identical climate conditions) within the same month (both instruments were new). One had a very large sound, and the other seemed much more muted. This is as close to an apples-to-apples comparison as I could get. Even premium guitars vary in sound within the same model.

Even tho the cheap one sounds good, expensive guitars normally are more comfortable to play and allow your fingers to play for more time, and since I play for 2hours or more, most of the time, my fingers will thank me 😂. Not to sound mundane but as good videos are your norm, nice video. There is a comprehensive analysis of the Orangewood guitar done by DriftwoodGuitars. He has a KZbin channel. Driftwood Guitar is a luthier. When reviewing the guitars he actually cuts the guitar in half; then, provides detailed analysis of the type of bracing, woods used for bracing, tonal affect of woods used, thickness of sound board, thickness of clear coat or paint used and on and on. Understanding the process used to make a guitar is helpful. I happen upon the channel while having my morning coffee. Cheers

Thank you, that's very interesting. I've been thinking about getting my first acoustic to go with the electrics that I already have. This adds a lot of useful information for me. One thing to note about the difference between a company like Martin that makes everything in-house and a company that outsources some of the manufacture is the potential differences in quality control. Note that this has nothing to do with where the article is made (there are skilled luthiers and woodworkers the world over). Different organizations will necessarily have differences in processes, and there is a greater chance there can be a wider range in the quality of manufacture when a guitar or it's parts are made in multiple location and shipped longer distances. No two guitars are ever going to be identical, of course, and no company makes a perfect guitar every time. What I like about Orangewood is that they are careful to do their own setup and final check before the guitar goes out the door. I think this mitigates potential problems over other companies that rely more on outside organizations to do more of the setup. Of course, not matter what the guitar, the final setup should be done to the player's needs, whether by the player or a qualified luthier. I will definitely add Orangewood to my options for searching for my next instrument.

I had an Orangewood Mason Live that I purchased as a backup instrument. I played the Orangewood on many gigs and really appreciated the playability and feel. Oh My, you've got me shopping Guitars and Guitar tones again. Your comparison, I like them both. The Orangewood thru your Mic picks up the low Bass tone likely not heard so much in studio. The D28, always sounds well balanced, but a Price only an accomplished Musician can afford. Personally, I tend to look for close sounding Guitar alternatives vs the 'High Dollar' Acoustics because due to my luck, my Guitars are likely to get stolen or stepped on by my un-appreciative audience. it's a Fun Journey, shopping for a new Guitar, (especially comparing Acoustic Guitars in the stores, closed in glass, control booth's and swapping out the Guitars with my favorite own song creations). The drawback is , it's quite time consuming no doubt and finding someone to suffer through the experience with me is a miracle. Love your Voice and your Music, Big Luck going forward. And Folks, Support these Artists, Creativity, it really is Hard but enjoyable Work!

Well, done! Most reviews/demos are only new products. My Morgan sounded pretty lack luster out of the box. But after a couple months, it really bloomed and sounds great! Comparing the Martin and Orangewood within context was great! There is a need for players to have both "precious" and not as "precious" instruments. There's no need for snobbery and much need for practicality. Again, well done, Mary!

Started 1st March 2023 buying a fairly cheap, Takemine GN20 NS, without any electronics. Around $230 USD. It was somewhat dull, but after changing the nut and saddle from plastic to bone, the guitar certainly came to life. Also a proper setup was needed. This year I got myself a Taylor Guitar (Baby BT1e). Yes, I do clearly hear the difference. --- As also have been working with wood, I also see the difference in the quality of wood and especially in the finish/details. At the shop I also tried some of the more expensive Taylor and yes, there is difference between cheaper and more expensive guitars. -------- As a beginner songwriter myself, I really luv your music!!!! Orangewood might be my next acoustic guitar. Having seen the collector and high-end market craziness, I've settled on a philosophy to get the most guitar for the least money. If I ever do get a Martin, it will probably be a D-15 Streetmaster. Your playing and singing is incredibly consistent to be able to swap back and forth the way you did in the demo. Great review.

Thank you for your comparison of expensive vs inexpensive guitars. Here's my take on my Orangewood: I'll start by mentioning that I am a retired guitar repairman in the eastern United States. I was authorized by C. F. Martin and other respected brands to do warranty service on their guitars. I had never heard of Orangewood until I watched this video a few months ago. I decided to give Orangewood a try. I bought a factory-second, non-electrified, mahogany-topped Ava model. The only "secondness" I can find about it is that it came without the high E string, and the nut grooves could stand to be a hair lower, two problems easily rectified. Skipping all the nuances of a full-fledged review, I'll skip directly to my conclusion: My Orangewood Ava guitar is the most bang-for-the-buck acoustic guitar I have ever seen. Period. And thanks to you, I own one.

Nice Video! As mentioned, it's really all about what your "performance" consists of. Solo guitar performing is quite different than accompanying vocals/other instruments. Over many years of live performing I have found that with the acoustic guitar amped, the only thing that really matters is that the guitar is comfortable to play! If amplified, the sound of any guitar can be adjusted to taste whether using a pickup or a mic. "More comfortable to play" also includes how YOU mentally feel with it when standing in front of an audience. That could be affected by the appearance of the guitar - think of the difference between a Martin D18 and a cherry burst Gibson Hummingbird. Each makes a considerably different visual impression which affects your own feeling of using the guitar. In reality, NOBODY in the audience is ever going to say or think, "I really liked your song but it would have been much better if you played a Martin instead of that Orangewood"! OTOH, nobody is going to walk up to you after a song/performance, and say, "That's a really nice 'Orangewood' guitar!"

I listened to this with good-quality over-the-ear headphones. What I hear out of the Martin is more sustain and more depth/resonance in the lower registers (strings 4-6). It's not possible to hear a difference in the amount of hand strength needed to play clear notes, but I appreciate your mentioning it at the end of the video.

I think a big factor in the price difference is how it feels. My last acoustic guitar was a Mexican Martin and it was 100% serviceable and a solid workhorse. But eventually, the small things started to wear me down: the fretboard, the shape, the finish (satin that began to shine and get sticky), and it seemed to become more and more lifeless as it aged vs my other acoustic becoming more alive.

I love that we now have a number of "budget-friendly" instruments that can sound, feel and play remarkably well, especially compared to the 1960's and 1970's :D It's still a good idea to get hands-on and try a number of examples of brands, models, and even within same models, due to potentially less quality control with budget instruments and/or changes that occur between manufacture site and final destination. I loved watching/hearing an interview with Eric Bibb (an amazing singer/songwriter and acoustic guitar player for those unfamiliar) He had a collection of wonderful instruments, but wanted a different SOUND for a particular song. He found a music/guitar store that had a number of the exact same model approx. "parlor size" guitars that were of the type he wanted. (He WANTED that dry, thumpy woody sound without overtones or much systain) He tried a number of them before finding ONE that didn't have fret issues or other problems, but the one he eventually found was just what he wanted for recording that particular song. The guitar was something like $150 to $180 US price at the time. If the tool matches the job, that's what matters! :D Another "good excuse" for owning more than one guitar! :D

Crazy how even on studio monitors, you couldn't really tell when the guitars changed unless you were really listening to it! I'm sure the room and mics help a bit with that as well. Great video!

I started on a borrowed Ibanez, then bought a $300 Yamaha, and in four years it hasn't disappointed me one bit. A few of the components are made of "lesser" materials, but I don't think it matters at all, especially at my level of playing. My first electric was an entry-level Kramer, but the tuners were crap and the fret wires overhung the fretboard and cut my fingers. I picked up a used Schecter for $450 and it was like upgrading from a motorbike to a limousine. It's so smooth and tunes so easily, it's just a joy to hold in my hands. No beginner should spend big bucks on a guitar. Buy an inexpensive guitar, and use the savings to support the amazing content creators who help you along your musical journey.

I started out with an torrified top acoustic, then I picked up a baritone and finally I got a 12 string. All Orangewoods. They are all nice guitars. I also have a couple Martins, a Zager parlor and a Gretch resonator. I pondered the Oliver before I got the Zager. I may still get an Oliver. I have my 6 strings set in different tunings. Plus I signed up for your finger style class.

Can you elaborate on your Orangewoood 12 string? I am dying for a 12 string. I had a mid 50s Hofner, made in Germany, and even called the German headquarters with the serial number they could only say it was a mid 50s. They were bought out by Selmer, the band instruments company and they were of lesser quality. If you have any specs etc, I would appreciate it! I have not sang a song since my nephew brought it back with a collapsed bridge and bracing. I found that he tried to tune it to G instead of using a capo.

I own Taylors, Martins, Breedlove, and Gibson Acoustics. The guitar that sits on a stand next to my desk is my Orangewood Oliver M with Elixir .013-.053. It's my everyday guitar that I can take anywhere. I love my Orangewood! Thanks for this awesome video Mary. Fyi, it was your 1st video that sold me on the Oliver M. Thanks again!

I've never plucked a guitar string, but I do build speakers as a hobby. I absolutely thought the dark (Orangwood?) one was the expensive one. It is brighter and doesn't have the mid-bass resonance of the expensive one giving the lower priced guitar a flatter sounding response. I also like the dark color.

You picked up on something which is that “bright” sounds are increasingly popular among acoustic players, especially new players. Taylor capitalizes on this and they double down on their signature sound, which is bright. But one thing to know is that instruments are the opposite of speakers: a guitar with a flat non-resonant response is terribly uninspiring. It’s the subtle resonances and color that good instruments produce that generates an emotional connection. I preferred the Martin for the exact observation you made.

Love your openess and honesty, love the vids- nice song here, keep on writing- and we all hope LA is working out for you- I've had a D-35 for 2 years now and it is love...However, for years before I could afford that, I have played a DCX1E ( of the made in Mexico Martins) - marginally affordable at $700 or so, the neck and sound are excellent- these are made using more laminates, which have tremendous stability over time, but are not made completely of the traditional hard wood.

Both sound great imo. I'd use the Martin to record and the Orangewood to take with me everywhere: if something happens I can easily replace the Orangewood but not the Martin, I also prefer the Martins sound for recording, but enjoy the darkness of the Orangewood for a live setting. Owning the two I'd use both differently.

It may sound strange, but I liked the shots with the Orangewood better. The Martin sounds great and is second to none, but I had the feeling that it was competing with your voice instead of accompanying it. A mix with the Martin doing the instrumental sections and the Orangewood the vocal parts would be ideal, in my opinion. You're a great artist and I am a big fan. Cheers!

I own 7 guitars including Martin, Taylor, Yamaha, Zagar, Gibson and even a Keith Urban $200 accoustic special. They are all unique and the Martin and Taylor are my favorites. When I bought the Keith Urban, I put good strings on it and made some minor adjustments. Decided one night to ask my friends I wanted to do an experiment. So, I played 2 minutes of the same song on all 7 and then asked them to give a score of 1 for a guitar they thought sounded amazing, a 2 for one that sounded good, and a 3 for a guitar that was just okay. 3 of my 4 buddies ranked the Urban as a 1 along with the Martin and Taylor. Gibson and Zagar scored a 2 and the rest were a 3. All of the guitars were pleasing, but they thought the Urban was a cut above. Just shows that even a cheap guitar properly setup can be pleasing to the ear in the right hands.

The build quality of the Orangewood is amazingly good for a guitar of that price. I've done set-ups for cheap guitars a few times and, as long as the basic build of the guitar is good, you can generally absolutely transform the playability just by making relatively simple changes such as adjusting the truss rod, upgrading cheap components etc. You can end up with a quality guitar that sounds and plays like it would have been way more expensive than it actually was.

Mary let me start out by saying I'm a long time musician and with eyes shut just listening there is a night and day difference. The Martin is so soft and warm with a sound that feels like a warm fuzzy blanket that envelopes the whole room The Orangewood gives a warm comparison and not bad for the price point , but the Martin run's away in the studio setting .

Thanks for your work in putting together this video. I will probably never own a Martin or Taylor of other high end guitar, but I do love my Ibanez concert solid top mahogany (very much like your Orangewood) and my Orangewood Rey S. I'm an open mic and home player and with a good set of strings, both of these guitars sound perfect for me. Thanks again Mary, well done!

Nice demo. And beautiful song BTW. My go-to stage/recording guitar is my $1500+ US made ovation Elite T. But my everyday, and sometimes recording choice is my $300 China Ovation Applause. They play like completely different instruments but they both are a joy to play. Sure there is a notable quality difference in the sound...but in a pinch I might just choose the cheaper one if. I had to make a choice. Thankfully I don't have to choose. 😊

I have always wanted a Martin guitar. I recently bought a Martin 000-16 Streetmaster. I didn't love it, and was trying to force myself to like it because it said, "Martin", on the headstock. I returned it, and purchased a Recording King RO-328. A 000 sized guitar, just like the Martin. As soon as I strummed it, I loved it. That was the reaction I should have had from the Martin, but didn't. The Recording King, is all solid wood, made in China, but that is the one I wanted to keep. It's not just the country of origin that is the deciding factor, it's the standard of quality the company ordering the guitars will accept that makes a guitar great or not. I still want a Martin though, and now an Orangewood too. Thanks for the video and for confirming my decision.

Thanks for the comparison and your philosophy about cheap vs expensive. My main squeeze is an Art & Lutherie made in 2004 in Quebec purchased at a pawn shop. I'm not a performer but I have tried Taylor and Martin. They are great but my Quebecois guitar with a cedar top, laminated cherry back and sides is just fine.

They both sound good. The Martin just has more of a damp sound to it compared to the Orange Wood. Based on this comparison I would definitely prefer the Orange Wood for sound and price.

Although I didn't agree with your thoughs on how these guitars sound individually (to my ears, the Martin sounded the brightest and the Orangewood was the warmest), I however 100% agree that in a mix, with vocals over it, it doesn't really matter. That was a cool experiment, great job!

Mary, thank you for posting this. My grandson is 12 years old and he's just learning to play guitar. He has an electric guitar but I thought it would be nice to get him an acoustic as well. I had him watch this video and even listen to it with headphones on to see if he could tell the difference between the guitars. It was really close. Then, as a surprise, I bought the Orangewood Junior guitar for him, and he was thrilled to death. When he opened the box, he thought I had got him a new guitar case and he was super excited. Then he unzipped it and realized there was a guitar inside and he was like WHAT!?! that little moment would've never happened without this video. So thank you. Also ... I love that song 6000 miles. What kind of mic do you use to record your guitar when you're playing?
