The Vemuram is really dark and choked sounding compared to the Golden Plexi. The Golden Plexi would be better for a metal tone with lots of definition, where I think the Vemuram would be better for a more blues sound. Just my two cents. I personally prefer the Golden Plexi.

The thing is, how are you going to get more tone through the Vemuram? With the Plexi, you can just use your guitar tone control rolled back and you have the sound of the Vemuram.
@CAPFlyer7 жыл бұрын
The Vemuram almost sounds like a combined fuzz/gain pedal to me, especially at the higher gain levels, while the Plexi is at half the level for the same gain and much more brightness, so I agree the Vemuram is probably a better blues-style pedal, but I agree with Chirn70 that the Plexi can do that same dark/fuzzy sound by rolling back the guitar.

The gain knob on the golden Plexi seems to have no effect at all. I watched him turn it up and down and the sound hardly changed at all. The expensive one is too dark for my taste, others will prefer it. I'm actually most impressed with how the little one stayed together even when he was playing high up past the 12th fret because THAT'S usually where you hear the cheaper pedals start to fall apart and reveal themselves to be pedals. I have to say I disagree with them there is a whole lot difference between them
@timwhite55627 жыл бұрын
So the expensive one is like $400 US? That's absurd. I just cloned an actual Plexi amp for 50% more than this pedal. I own an Ethos Overdrive Preamp pedal that was a little more than This pedal, so I'm not adverse to expensive gear. The Ethos however is an actual 2 channel Preamp, with DI out, mid boost, effects loop and an almost daunting amount of control, and not insignificant is that it's emulating an absurdly expensive amp. a $400 Marshall in a box though?

@KozmykJ7 жыл бұрын
My recollection of those old Vintage Marshall's back when they were new, that the Vermuram is supposed to be emulating, is that they were hard, bright and edgy especially up close. You had to work to get subtle tones out of them. The Plexi reminds me more of those than the Vermuram.
@Gummmibaer7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I guess I'm not a fan of Marshall-type overdrive sounds.Wasn't happy with any Marshall tube amp in the guitar store, but when I'm playing at home with my Line 6 HD 500 the plexi emulation is by far my favorite sound of all those amps in there. Finding yourself a nice overdrive sound is a total mystery I guess.

@midnightmerv35607 жыл бұрын
Reuben Solly this, 100% before you buy any pedals or tweak any of the settings on your amp you should really play with the tone and volume controls on your guitar. it'll take a few weeks but over time you'll find different "sweet spots", combinations of volume,tone and pickup. Here's an example: I've got an aria pro ii strat copy thing from the 70's and it's got a brass nut, as a result the thing screams and twangs like no tomorrow,it actually hurts my ears at normal volumes if I have everything on my guitar at 10 because it's so damn twangy. so I roll the tone halfway and the volume to 8ish for rithym playing and then any time I need a little extra or I have to cut through I just turn up the controls on my guitar. you could also set the gain on your amp for just a smidge more than you'd actually use durring rithym playing to account for the fact your rolling it back on the guitar a bit, that way you've got lots left in the tank for when you go to dial it up for lead playing.

You need to listen to them with your own guitar / amp, I wouldn't have touched either with the H&K, from the demo the cheap one is well worth considering but there's a lot of questions on how they were running the amps. I've tried and ditched cheap pedals in the past due to hum / ground noise with my gear and O/D can be very picky. I agree the clone pedals are getting better and better but if it doesn't sound right when you get it home it doesn't matter weather it costs 30 or 300 your not going to use it.

I love these videos because they help you avoid a lot of crap. I don't think there's any doubt that the Plexi is miles better, and while you can argue Vemuram might be more suitable to certain situations, with Plexi you're still looking at a pedal that is 270£ cheaper and sounds way clearer. So unless money grows in trees for you, there's literally no reason to get Vemuram over the Plexi, when the quality is so good. And honestly, a case made out of brass? Who gives a fuck. That's how they always get you, just like with guitars, they have gold knobs and diamonds in the fretboard, and while the quality is still good, does the useless extra shit you get justify the cost? Fuck no. Plexi all the way.

It's an odd one this; the Vemuram has more range in the controls and the Tone City is a one-trick pony with a single sound. I really appreciate you guys making all the content you do. As far as I can tell it always seems like you try to be honest, as opposed to just jocking the thing with the best margin. Sorry I don't really buy stuff from you. I'm in the U.S. and with customs fees and the wall, it's just not entirely feasable.

Do cheap cables vs expensive, blind test.
@oleauby75837 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Bailey what's the difference actually??
@birkett267 жыл бұрын
Nothing to do with sound and tone, just build quality. The expensive cables are advertised to last a bit better on the road.
@kennethcbailey277 жыл бұрын
Many people claim they hear a big difference with the super high end cables. I've never bothered to try and just use the average stuff myself, but I figured it would make for a decent vid
@swagnostic1327 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Bailey it depends on the shielding and how they handle some freqs. tbh, it's most notable with either long vs short lengths and patch cables. since you'd have more patch cables (theoretically), there's more of a chance for a less amazing cable to cause and build up noises.
@joebruley41177 жыл бұрын
I've blind A/B'd it and I have to say that more expensive cables (think $30-60ish depending on length) do send a clearer signal than cheaper cables. If you spend more than $60 on a cable (like 30ft) now you've gotten drank the kool aid. I guess you could say I am a fan of quality cables, not expensive ones. Some really great guitarists have opted for cheaper cables (or longer cables, like coil cables) because it snips some of the high frequencies. Also, the more expensive cables have a better build quality which in the long run makes them cheaper if you gig regularly. Plus, many companies give you a lifetime warranty. So as with many guitar tones, use your ear and decide what you like best. Cables don't do much from an audience's perspective, but the player will notice it.

Well I for one cannot hear £280 worth of difference between the two pedals. For the dearer pedal, you should be able to hear quite a lot of tonal richness, dynamics and general harmonic loveliness, but I certainly couldn't!

Here's a rather revealing experience I had recently. I purchased a BluGuitar Amp1 because I'm building a pedalboard with onboard amp. My current rig has the TC Golden Plexi as the source crunch. My $49 Golden Plexi bumped my $162 Carl Martin Plexitone off of my board, and I have also returned the BluGuitar Amp1. The Bulg unit is well built for sure, but I'm an old school gut. Give me one clean tone and one crunch tone. The Tone City pedals provide this for me nicely. So how do you like that. A $49 pedal knocks an $800 pedal off of my board.

The reason for the uneven response on the gain control of the Plexi is that they've likely installed a linear pot where there should be a log pot. Other than that, distortion is merely caused by the overloading of one stage by another, which is a very simple principle. This is why the early Tonebenders, with their simple transistor designs, worked so well. Mega-expensive effect pedals are produced because there's a market for them with guitarists who have more money than intelligence.

to everyone saying that the golden plexi beats the vermuraam (especially considering the price), here's my 2 cents: from the perspective from someone who deals with audio every day (editing, mixing, recording, sound design...), the golden plexi sounds horrible. and as captain said, the difference is MASSIVE. lemme elaborate why...the golden plexi has a very distinct solid state sound to it. it's not dynamic at all. all it does is adds fizz to your sound no matter what register you're playing in. this means it's always adding the same upper harmonics to your riffs, when you're playing high or low. when you're setting your sound to a mix in a band, that will always add noise in upper frequencies that is often unwanted and makes you noisy and the sound starts to fight other sounds like cymbals and drum and bass transients. what vermuram does is that it responds dynamically and adds harmonics to the tones you are producing via your instrument. its organic and creamy and adds a bit of hair to your sound. let me remind you all that a guitar is a middle instrument not a high or a bass one. that is a FACT that most of the bedroom players tend to miss or not notice at all. to mention one more fact: the clean sound is very dark and dull to begin with. you can't buy a pedal that will make a sound like that just better. the golden plexi is trying to fake that. it's trying to make a somewhat dark sound more present and (let's say) better. the vermuram is designed to push a slightly overdriven amp a bit more and retain that exact same sound you dialed in. that being said, none of these are made to make anything sound better. the vermuram changes the dynamic response a bit and adds a bit of overdrive, when the golden plexi just adds fizz. THAT being said, the vermuram can be used in a lot of different applications production wise. you can overdrive drum or bass sounds when mixing, add a bit of hair to your synths and maybe even vocals!. i just can't see the golden plexi doing any of these things. when looking at the vermuram i immediately think of strymon deco or jhs crayon. they are both expensive AF but have limitless potential when making sounds with them. the cheap distortion pedals don't do that. but they are great for playing at home, making a budget gear a bit more present. to finalise: the golden plexi isn't a bad pedal at all. especially for the price. so i advise ppl to try them and buy them if they like it. the more expensive drives are just more specialised kind of tools that you normally don't put on your pedalboard. peace out!

Respect to all the Vemuram endorsees, including tone-masters Pete Thorn and Tim Pierce, but like most other folks here, I too just don't feel it justifies a nearly 10X price differential over the Tone City Plexi. Of course, hard to say conclusively via youtube vid audio, but even so, the GPlexi here sounded just so much brighter and more aggressive, two characteristics I enjoy in Plexi-style pedals. Although yes, that awful 6-9 o'clock gain range is laughable. Strymon pedals however are among those that really do justify their price - sorry Vemuram.

At around 5:41 onward for a while the tones were finally set approximately equal which makes it easier to see which one is better. When the tones are equal... neither. I wish the entire test was done keeping the tones within similar EQ ranges so we could find out if there really is a $281 reason to buy the Vemuram.

Spot on Chappers, the more ££ you ask for something the higher peoples expectations. If it was marketed at £80 it would have joined the legions of £80 drive pedals and gone unnoticed. It did sound smoother than the plexi though. Yes do the wah pedals.

A lot of "boutique" type pedals are very vague about it, because the corksniffing designers behind them probably think it looks "cheap" with labels on them.

As soon as you crank the amp’s volume to a giggable level, the Karen cleans up and blows the Plexi out the water. The Golden Plexi only sounds ‘clearer’ because it has literally ZERO low end. Turn up the volume and it’s just glassy and unusable. Don’t get me wrong... in your bedroom, you are better off with the Golden Plexi. But you simply cannot gig with it. That’s why they’re cheap. Pretty much all high-end pedals sound shite below gigging volumes. They aren’t made for bedroom use, they’re made to be played at the very peak of their headroom. At low volumes, they sound muddy... just like high end amps do.
@mieszanesztuki6 жыл бұрын
I call bullshit, its a pedal, and its suppoused to do it's job at any stage of push of the power section.
@jake23556 жыл бұрын
Yeah yeah bullshit😂 not all overdrives have the same ‘job’ you know...Have you ever even played a Vemuram? Clearly not or you would agree with everything I’ve said. Anyone who has cranked an amp while using one of their pedals knows just how good they are. As soon as you turn up the amps volume, that muddiness you hear in the video completely disappears!
@jake23556 жыл бұрын
This is not me saying their pedals are worth the money... because they aren’t. The Plexi represents better value for ££. I mean, it’s 40 quid for fucksake! But the Karen is a much better pedal for higher volumes. The Plexi is a ‘bedroom pedal’
@indoshakermaker6 жыл бұрын
I don't know man. Everytime I gig, I get my sounds to my liking, then the sound guys can just mic that, and amplify it to a 'giggable' volume, keeping the same tones.

To my ears the more expensive pedal was a little smoother but worth the extra expense for non-pro hobbyists?....NOPE I thought the Plexi was just fine for what it was. Btw guys I just love your comparison videos. I watch them often even when I am not shopping around or in need of buying anything. God bless you, you are performing an important public service and your videos are also just a lot of fun to watch.
