The Corfe Castle train is an absolute must. You will love it, a little steam line with 2 stops, very reasonably priced for ALL the children, with volunteer station men in trad. dress! Corfe castle, Dorset, Poole Harbour, the Isle of Wight, you could do a great 2 week holiday with an Air B n B on the south coast.

You finally made it to Dorset. I moved here from London years ago and have never regretted it. I started in Shaftesbury north Dorset and now live in south Dorset about 6 miles, a simple bus ride from Bournemouth and Poole. The whole area is beautiful both coastal and inland. Try checking out some of the great seafood restaurants and cafes. Also the Jurassic coast is rich in fossils. A world heritage site.

One thing to remember about our coastal towns. The seagulls are experts at removing food from your hands without stopping mid-flight. I have seen them snatch a full serving of fish and chips from someone as soon as they sat down. They are the Spitfire pilots of the bird kingdom. The funniest was when a seagull snatched food but was attacked in flight by a group. The food dropped into a young woman's lap on the beach and the whole flock of seagulls descended on her at once.

Welcome to Dorset. Bournemouth right along to Bridport is a pretty amazing piece of coastline. You've got the beaches but also Poole Harbour, Studland, Swanage (and taking the steam train to Corfe Castle - National Trust membership makes stuff cheaper). Then there's Lulworth and Durdle Door. We're just outside Weymouth and then there's Portland. Chesil Beach and all the cliffs right along then to Bridport and beyond. There is so much history here, right from the Iron Age to WWII. I thoroughly recommend a good few days exploring the area. You can always end the day on a beach. In the other direction from Bournemouth, you have the New Forest and of course the Isle of Wight - that one is not a day trip. I can tell you that it's cold and foggy here at the moment, with a frost due tonight. I live in the countryside, so we get frosts but not a lot of snow. It knows how to rain here, but not as much as Wales or Ireland. Just for reference, it's the English Channel, not the Atlantic. That's a bit further out.

Lovely video guys Bournemouth is a beautiful place we go there as a family pretty much every year we love all of that area Next time Go check out Poole next it’s literally next door to Bournemouth the harbour is I guess Beverly Hills by comparison large beautiful homes by the water,if you like shopping though Poole is superb and it has such a lovely vibe Poole your love it Another place for you to go and visit is Swanage it’s a little seaside town not far it is like going back in time it’s totally unspoilt so chilled apart from when they have the carnival the beech is perfect golden sand it’s so quaint there’s nothing like eating fish n chips looking out to sea watching people fish, you can see the isle of White across the water you can drive there takes half n hour where you can take in along the way Corfe Castle which is strikingly beautiful If you park up at Corfe go have a Dorset cream tea in the gardens scones jam and clotted cream pot of tea perfect and then take the steam train on to Swanage You can if you want to by pass Corfe take the ferry across the water from Poole to Swanage it’s an experience as it’s pulled by chains, Swanage is an experience of its own for me there’s nothing more perfect it’s a Jurassic coastline on New Year’s Day people walk along the sand dunes to Poole There is so much to see in these locations blue lagoon monkey world but another beautiful place to go and check out is Weymouth with an incredible beach so much to do, we always go to Sea Life Dorset is a dream i wish I could live there, maybe some day I will we can all dream it’s a place of my childhood we owned a family caravan so like a lot of Londoners it was our holiday destination, Bournemouth is for many a place to retire, it’s a lovely place take in a show at The Winter Gardens life is chilled there for sure, anyway nice video

What a lovely post. Bournemouth is now my home town. I live close to the beach and it never gets any less beautiful every time I see it. Next go down to Alum Chine ( walking distance from Bournemouth along the beach) , walk up the Tropical Walk then on to Westbourne village and top it off with traditional fish and chips at Chez Fred's . A cheap day rider bus pass will take you to Sandbanks, Studland, Corfe Castle and Swanage. Or take a lovely boat ride from Poole Harbour .

We were nearby one weekend so we popped down to BH and like you we were impressed. And it was summer, so the beach and sea were gorgeous. Definitely one of England's top resorts. And unusually for us, it's a town that's younger than the USA!

Really enjoyed this video. I've lived here all my life and got quite used to all the sights and surroundings, and seeing someone else discover everything in the area made me reconsider and think about how privileged I am to live in such a nice area. I suppose because I live in the area, I'm more used to hearing the local's complaints about Bournemouth and the surrounding areas of Dorset (Poole, Southbourne, Boscombe etc) which mostly amount to complaints about how run down certain areas are, which is true, but possibly could be a case of a vocal minority complaining. There are areas which need a lot of work, and it can sometimes feel like the people aren't always the best, but overall the place is lovely. It's a shame you hadn't come down a few months either prior or later - it's always busy both in summer and over the Christmas period. There's always things going on in the gardens and on the seafront in summer, and over Christmas the square becomes full of winter stalls, a bar, and the gardens are decked out with Christmas lights and trees. If you get a chance to visit in December, I'd 100% recommend it. If you come early September there's also a yearly airshow, with displays happening all along the seafront. Here's a few other places worth visiting: Both Bournemouth and Boscombe Pier Oceanarium (Which you walked past on the seafront) Pavilion Theatre (might be worth catching a show here, you'd have to see what's on. The building itself is old and some of the architecture is beautiful, and the main auditorium is always great to sit in and watch anything.) Boscombe itself - I'd expect many people to tell you to avoid this area, and it is definitely one of the more run down places in the area. There are efforts being made to regenerate it though, and there's a good selection of shops along the precinct and in both the Sovereign Centre and Royal Arcade Far end of the Upper Gardens - The second park space you found is known as the Upper Gardens. If you keep going down those paths and underneath the main road overpass, you'll enter into a quieter area of the gardens, which is just as well used and beautiful. You can follow this quite far down; there's a few bridges, a pond at the far end and more trees, and it makes for a nice walk or bike ride. If you're interested in the surrounding areas, then definitely give Southbourne, Christchurch and Poole a visit - all within a bus ride away from the town centre. The rest of the Dorset/Hampshire coastline are also great places to visit - try Durdle Door, Lyme Regis, the Isle of Wight or larger cities in Hampshire like Southampton or Portsmouth. I could go on forever.

The really spectacular seaside towns in the South are in Devon and Cornwall. Take a trip along Lyme Regis and Sidmouth, the Jurassic coast, and along through all the small fishing towns.

@@MacandBlair Fort Nelson is free too, part of the Royal Armouries One of "Palmerstons Follies", a group of huge (expensive) forts to stop Napoleon taking the dockyards But he never came. If you ever visit let me know, I worked there reinstating the fort to it's current condition from the WW2 anti aircraft battery it had been repurposed to. Victory and Warrior are fantastic, and will really fire the kids imagination. Southsea by the funfair is the Round Tower where Henry VIII watched the Mary Rose sink (the Mary Rose is another attraction at the Dockyard...but extra cost) so is worth an amble, and watch the only commercial hovercraft ferry come in. (£25 crossing.... unnerving...you can see why it never caught on tbh)

Just 4 miles west of Bournemouth is ‘Poole Harbour’! 100 square miles of inland water where 3 islands sit, Brownsea Island being the largest. Very beautiful. Further west still is an ancient village of ‘Corfe castle, partly demolished by Oliver Cromwell after the English civil war. You guy’s will love that…👍

By the way, it's pronounced 'bornmuth' with an almost silent 'u'. Bornm'th. There's a place in Wales called Barmouth, so your pronunciation could easily confuse people. Well, Brits, anyway! ;)

I love seeing people visiting Bournemouth for the first time. Lived here for 10 years and it has definitely become home. There's some really incredible places along the Jurassic coast I'd recommend. Weymouth and Sandbanks are worth a visit. Swanage is pretty nice too, plus if you get the ferry from poole you'll pass old Harry rocks. I'd also recommend Lyme Regis which is a lovely town with some absolutely incredible views, especially on a sunny day, the golden cap can be quite the sight to behold when the sun is low. My favourite place personally would be Westbay or Bridport harbor. It was the setting of a few TV shows but most notably Broadchurch. Although it's less of a hidden gem then when I was there as a kid, it still is a truly beautiful place. It's great for a morning stop before heading to Lyme Regis at the very least. I do hope you manage to come back soon and explore more of the local area and please do visit Bournemouth again! 😁

Nice one I lived down here in Bournemouth 32 yrs now it’s a great place to live the church you were next to has got Mary Shelleys grave in it just up the steps on the right has you walk up throw it and them gardens go bk for about 3 miles it’s a good walk and there’s a carp pond hafeway it’s a good place to stop for a coffee but take a flask and you shud check out sandbanks pound for pound the Real Estate Or land if the 2nd most expensive in the world some nice houses down there but good to have a walk round and dream maybe one day .Cheers🇬🇧🙂✌️

Hi Mac (and the gang), another great Ferris wheel start, in my hometown! It's fantastic in the summer. Seeing as you mentioned Redwoods, in the New Forest, not far away, you can find a pair of Giant Sequoia, one of which is over 150 feet tall, not far from the "knightwood oak", that maybe over 500 years old. Look 'em up. Well worth a visit next summer, but it will be "busy"! You could be brave and visit in the winter. Thanks for the vids. 😀

a great thing to visit in Bournemouth in summer which I do every year is the Bournemouth air show u just sit on the beach taking in the rays and meanwhile above you the air display involves world war 2 planes/ red arrows/ military planes and helicopters it's a fantastic day but get there early the beach fills up mighty quick !! 😁😁

I don't know where you are staying family USA, but my feelings are that you should take in Portsmouth Historic Harbour if you can, although maybe not a children's day out. A bit of history there like Nelsons great warship HMS Victory and others. You can actually walk round Victory which is in amazing condition. Just a few steps away are the partly recovered ruins of King Henry V111 flagship 'The Mary Rose'. Lots more to see there, will take you all day and longer.

This is a great recommendation, and can be fun and informative for kids but not great for babies on the older ships. With 4/6 children I'd do this one on a weekday with a ride on the boat to Gunwharf Quays for something to eat, the food and drink inside is not well priced.

Thanks for posting. Next time you visit Bournemouth be sure to visit the Russell Coates Museum, it is a Victorian gem. Just north of Bournemouth you will find The New Forest, by 'new' it was founded shortly after the arrival of William the Conqueror 1066, well worth a visit.

When you do a swing through the south coast, don't forget the Isle of Wight -- very special. And I ask all the south coast folk: do you think of the Channel as The Atlantic Ocean, or something distinct?

The UK has around 12,000 miles of coast line. Hence why its such a very varied and beautiful country. Being so compact no sooner are you out of one town you're in another. There's more crammed into this fabulous land than anyone can imagine. To qualify as a city (usually) it has to have a cathedral. Take worcester, a population of 103,000 but...it has a beautiful cathedral and is a beautiful city to boot.

The Gardens continue a long way in the other direction, you can almost walk from one end of town to another through gardens, Hengistbury Head is a great beauty spot with views of the Isle of Wight and Bourenmouth. And it's always worth taking the Chain ferry from Sandbanks to Studland, seeing Corfe Castle, and Swanage for a more traditional feeling town. The ferris wheel isn't popular with locals, it was put there after the hot air balloon was taken away.

Just nestling next to Bournemouth is Poole Harbour reputed to be one of the largest and most beautiful natural habours in the world. It's great for boating and fishing if you are into either and I'm not sure if it's still true or not but at one time the homes there were the most expensive in the world.

The New Forest has roaming ponies and deer. The ponies in particular just stop in the middle of the road and the deer appear from nowhere. So, you need to take care when driving through. The New Forest was an ancient royal hunting ground. Later, it became the source of oak to build ships for the Royal Navy. There are great pubs in the Nee Forest but it does get packed in summer. Any accident (with deer, etc) and heavy traffic means queuing for hours.

Bournemouth is great! My hometown is about 40mins away in Southampton and it's one of the main cruise ports on the South Coast. We don't have the gorgeous beaches but we do have the Titanic museum because the Titanic launched from Southampton. We have amazing parks in the city centre. If you love urban green spaces Southampton is ranked the third best in the UK for them. Newcastle and Stoke on Trent are 1st and 2nd. But aside from the central parks we have the common land which is where the peasants used to be able to graze their livestock for free. The New Forest isn't far away either, bridging Dorset and Hampshire. Truly a beautiful place. If you visit Lyndhurst in the New Forest you won't be disappointed. You'll see wild ponies trotting around the village. The other things I'd recommend Southampton for though are the Tudor House museum and the medieval walls. You can also day trip to the Isle of White from Southampton on a ferry. I highly recommend a visit there too. Maybe a good weekend trip to do with the kids in the summer.

Its much nicer in the winter in bournemouth, theres lights up everywhere huge trees in the gardens markets by the pavillion and temporary food stalls

Bournmouth is very popular with older (what Spaniards call Third Age residents) holidaymakers and as a place to retire. With Brighton and Blackpool, these Three Bs form the backbone of the political convention circuit in the UK. My personal preference is for the nearby cities of Salisbury and Winchester or for the delightful harbour and sailing town of Weymouth. Your kids would love the Dinosaur Coast around Weymouth and the unique Dinosaur Museum at Dorchester, Dorset's old county town (Casterbridge in the Thomas Hardy novels). I think Bournmouth is the smallest town to currently have a Premier League team.

Please do not miss Weymouth in Dorset it's just around the coast westward from Bournemouth called the "the English Bay of Naples" where many US troops set off for the D-Day landing many losing their life within hours. Where King George III and his court spent their Sumners in the late 1700's lets not forget Henry VIII two castles nor the Napleon Fort .Where the famous Victorian English Author Thomas Hardy based many a novel, where the worlds first torpedo was developed and tested with its magnifcent beach and a historical harbour its a very special place so many pubs and restaurants and having more sunshine hours than most places within the UK .You will need more than a day to take it all in. Ps FYI it's not the Atlantic Ocean on the south coast it's the English Channel at this point of the coast line

From my understanding, I think for a place to be called a city it requires a cathedral. I would very strongly recommend the series pillars of the Earth. This will give you an entertaining experience of the start of cathedrals in this country in medieval times.

This is a good 'city' rule but there are many exceptions. Guildford has a cathedral but is not a city. Southampton is a city but has no cathedral...
