One major design flaw was how the shocks weren’t set with sag, so when the shock closet to the ground wanted to compress, the opposing shocks couldn’t extend any more which prevents the shock that is taking impact from compressing.
@ninjahunterx7497
@ninjahunterx7497 3 жыл бұрын
So as in the video, the rim has to deform in order to take the impact, right? If it was done the way you said, the shocks would do all the handling.

As an engineer, the rim it self can warp if it is prolonged to flexibility at a center focal point of origin on the rim, which is the hub where the bearings are also that. That's why it is best to keep a rim very hard and stiff with spokes and let the shocks flex on a frame or chassis of a bike or car.
@TeamCykelhold

@@shot.2d_ Yeah, you can see on the video, the shocks can only compress. They cannot stretch longer without braking. So the shock above the wheel hub tries to stretch(but cannot) and the two below try to compress(but cannot either because the third shock above prevents this). So basically this configuration will just destroy the shocks and rims and probably the bike frame as well, along with the rider smashing on the pavement as a result.

also i think as the shock on the bottom compresses its working against the shocks at 2 and 10 because they would be stretching. probably the wheel would fall apart after a while as it was designed for 30+ spokes and now only has 3

@Martyr4JesusTheChrist interesting, well in any-case i still feel his wheels on his bike would still fall apart, they are designed to be supported at 36 points not 3, but the softwheel does show the design does have merit if you have a wheel designed to handle the load with only 3 spokes.

Just so were on the same page... this is faulty engineering at its finest. When one shock compresses it bends the other two out of shape. The wheels will be pretzels before you get home. The design is bulky, costly, and impractical. If those shocks were used correctly this ride would still be a nightmare because the rider is too light to cause a recoil on suspension that stiff.

Super cool, impractical, project :) In 1903 Renault made 2 cars where they used shock absorbers (5 of them) in a similar geometry to your 3. This was a suspension solution to combat the rigidity of the solid rubber used on rims at the time. That same year vulcanized rubber started being used which allowed inflatable tires. Obviously inflatable tires were far superior in solving the issue. But hey, it's fun to make impractical things sometimes. So I live this!

Not his best invention. It seems like when one spring needs to compress the others don't actually have much unsprung space to modulate. That combined with less rigidity in the rim and the overall risk of having a catastrophic failure of a spring (out of 6) leading to a serious brain injury... yeah nah lol

People experiment with things because they want to, because they can...and because it's FUN. Sometimes good things come out of it. For every successful experiment, there are hundreds of failed ones. That's how we learn.

@ruariblack
@ruariblack 3 жыл бұрын
Concept is interesting but you will probably find your rims will break over time. There is less support is certain areas. Instead of the rim being universally supported it now only has 3 support points. Even through the chain will drop and have some chain slap that is excessive for something that should be helping refuse the forced out through the rider and components. Also he took a lot of force when dropping off the ledge

It's amazing how many inventors bring designs to fruition without researching wether it's been done in the past and why not. This is one example of something that's been tried many, many times by many back-yard inventors and abandoned because it's a bad idea. Really bad idea. Wheels need to be light, because you're spinning rotating mass, so wheel weight is 3x as detrimental to performance as static weight. It's a ton of extra mass to have to accelerate and decelerate up hills. 3 shocks literally doing the work instead of one good one in your fork.
