I forgot to hit “public”. Check out the first soap that actually properly scared me out of testing. 😅

When I was a new soapmaker, I used water as a percent of oils. Now that I understand all the things better, it totally makes more sense to use ratios, and I have for the last couple of years. It was my experience, however, that the soap got way hotter the more liquid I had. And my soap doesn't gel unless I CPOP. My everyday recipe is 1.5:1 with a portion of that liquid being milk, and the other portion being aloe. I love being able to unmold and cut in less than 12 hours. If I'm using a naughty fragrance, I can cut in like 6 hours. I'm impatient so that works for me, lol! My recipe uses 25% lard, so it stays nice and fluid for even the most intricate swirls. I get that can be a challenge for vegan soapers.

I agree! I've gone down to 1.7:1 and I have found I have longer time to work with most of my soaps! Of course FO plays into this, but known FO's are slowed down for sure with less water!

Do you have a formula on lye amounts if you use citric acid in the lye solution? Or is it another video ;-) Thanks for being so giving.

This is so cool. Thank you for explaining. I like making soap as a hobby. It relaxes me from a long day at work. Plus I want a super moisturizing bar for my aging skin without costing so much because I do like to eat! Been watching too many videos from various soapers and honestly that can get really confusing. I chuckle when you speak of your chemistry background. I had to take that class twice in college :-)

See, I had to take Finite Math twice in college. That math class was cursed. 😂

I’ve often wondered about what would happen if there was less water than lye, and WAY too chicken to test it myself! Appreciate your daring and curious nature! 😏

Thank you so much I finally understand water discount you are amazing with your science of soap

This was very informative. I prefer a non-gelled soap, it makes for a more pastel color, and I'm experimenting now with water discounts that will prevent high heat. Thanks again for very useful video.

I only water discount when doing my animal fats soaps… because it takes FOREVER to get to emulsion.
@macio51022 жыл бұрын
For clarity, so an example of water to lye ratio solution could be; 1.5 (water): 1 (lye) …just trying to understand what that explanation would look like if typed/written out. Is that correct? Thank you.
@MsAubrey2 жыл бұрын
You have it right. 1.5:1 ratio is water:lye.😊

I’ll never forget when I tried to use pumpkin purée in my formula. I didn’t discount my water and it was a drippy nasty mess 24 hours later! I had to clean out my oven because I C-popped, but I’m trying again wish me luck

You can do it!

Great video. So does this mean the lowest u can go is a 1:1 ratio of water to lye in a soap? Does it produce a safe bar of soap?
@MrsSoapAndClay6 ай бұрын
Hey! You can use a 1:1 and it is a safe bar of soap, yes.

I love the metric system I use it all the time at work. I remember in the 90s they were going to switch to metric in the USA. I was so happy and kept waiting for it but alas nothing happened. I don’t even know why. Metric is so much better.
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
Ha! Yeah they tried back in the 70s to move education in the US to metric, my mom said, and it didn’t last long. Americans are stubborn, I guess. 😂

I keep shaking my head yes towards the end. Because the majority of my batches are 53oz. total batch weight… my standard amount of water is 13.3 oz. to lye at 4.9 - 5 oz. My discount numbers are 10.5 oz. to 4.9-5 oz. 😂 Ya just sorta start remembering the numbers after awhile. 😁
@MrsSoapAndClay2 жыл бұрын
Totally! I bet I could text GeorgiaMae right now and ask her what the standard batch amounts are for any of our master batches, and she would rattle it off without problems. Sticks with you when you do it enough. 😂
@MsAubrey2 жыл бұрын
@@MrsSoapAndClay it’s definitely convenient to remember if you decide to do a discount at the last minute. 😂 I think my first batch I tried a discount was my cocoa butter blend (the one you enjoyed so much), but I just was doing my “hockey pucks” so, no intricate design or anything.
