Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

Hi! Newbie sudser here. I was inspired to comment about your content (in general and) specifically this video. I hope that others appreciate the solid gold information you impart both here and throughout your channel. This video is valuable to me because you saved me YEARS of accidents and experiments to impart in a visual way, 1st, what water discounting is, and 2nd the effect it has on the end product. You are a walking, breathing Soap Calc!! I also like your straight faced sardonic comments! My wife has gone from... "NOW what are you doing?" to.. "Hey this is cool!" Thanks!

Perfect timing, I just used a new fragrance this week and it accelerated a lot. Tried more water but accelerated. Then used your 2,4:1 ratio instead of percent to water to oil and was able work with the FO and actually pour into mold rather than plop it in. Thanks for all the great info you give.

I just did the very same thing today! Had I known it was going to get "spicy", I'd have upped the water ante at the onset. And now, I know!!

Oh, that Smoke Whisper. So good, but so naughty. I have yet to make a loaf that didn't go a bit sideways, but I still use it because it's worth it.

Thanks for this video! I had to add some water to my solidifying soap batter today. I would have had soap on a stick but managed to get it in the mold.

I've been soaping for 5 years now (more or less) and I keep learning from you! Thank you! I have that scent too and I use it for incense because of the acceleration, now I will try it with the water addition. Thanks once again!

Thank you so much for this one. I have to re-do my son's soap and I think this will save that batch. He wanted deep activated charcoal with a mandarin and sandalwood fragrance oil. The first batch accelerated quickly, so with this new information you've given to us soapers, I think the next batch will go a lot more smoothly. Thank you again!!

Dear Mrs. Soap&Clay, I am so thankful to have found your channel. From my first (in retrospect really dumb) question on Uncle Jon's channel about 3 years ago (which he rightfully didnt deign to answer), in which i basically admitted to not knowing what a surfactant is, via some serious basic chemistry self education, and a long talk with a friend's Austrian granny, who makes no glycerine, 0% superfat curd soap - both from scratch as well as scraps, it is a pleasure to listen to someone like you. Chapeaux Madame! And long may your endeavour against ignorance continue.😊

I was just having that same conversation with myself over great smelling FOs that accelerate…I just got Pipe Tobacco from MW and it accelerated and instead of being a beast about the company…I thought, hummm maybe next time I’ll use the full amount of water that soapcalc suggests! Now, I know why it will work…

This was really cool to watch. I've had fragrance oil turn my soap right into soap dough like your 1:1 did. I'm now wondering if when that happens if you could add water to loosen it up some to make it pourable. Maybe some experiments are in order. And I love how you can change the look by adding water with the ghost swirl technique... So cool. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Ok so if your soap seizes can you just add more water and try to fix it or is it better just to throw it in the crock pot at that point and let it cook?

I have a question, hope i can formulate it so you can understand what i mean. Maybe you can explain what went sideways: i tried ghost swirls, because i thought it would be easier i made my batter with a 1.2:1 water to lye solution, divided my batter in 3 portions and added enough water in one of these to get a 2.3:1 solution. As i added the water the batter instandly accelerated and went thick, and in the mould it heated up so badly that i had oil sitting on the soap and it got heat tunnels that leaked oil. I moved it in the fridge but that doesnt help. Could you explain why this happend?
@RisaL-13
@RisaL-13 Жыл бұрын
Oh, so if you’ve already hit emulsion and you find the batch accelerating, can you go ahead and add water or is that not advised? Asking for a friend that might have a batch unmolded but still in the freezer paper because…damp. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
I have been known to do that to save a batch that was set for swirls.

Because I’m the type of gal who like to be smart-lazy, I wondered something while watching your video: is there a reason why you take the time to prepare 3 lye solutions? Because my smart-lazy brain’s first instinct would be to prepare a lye solution at the highest concentration (the one with the minimal water) and once everything is fully dissolve, divide the lye and add water to one of them? Of course, there would need to be some calculation (both for dividing the lye and for the water to be added). But for a principle point of view, is there an issue with this?
@MrsSoapAndClay
@MrsSoapAndClay Жыл бұрын
Hey! Good question. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with making one strong solution and diluting two, but that doesn’t save any time (and may take more time as the bulk lye solution will take longer to cool down) and adds an additional opportunity to make an error (the extra maths that have to be done to calculate the weight of the lye in addition to the water to get the proper amount of dilution). Many soapers use this method, also known as masterbatching.
