Lou, just to clarify things, the W43 was not a 'hemi'. it was a 'pentroof' engine. The W43 was a 4 valve engine, with two intake valves and two exhaust valves per cylinder arraigned in a 'pentroof' layout. A 'hemi' engine as the name implies has a round or 'hemispherical' (ie - 'half a circle') combustion chambers with the intake and exhaust valves facing each other on opposite sides of the combustion chamber and thus a 'hemi' can only ever have two valves per cylinder as the port layout would be impossible to have four valves connecting to their corresponding ports in a circular fashion.

Martmns, Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Since the spark plug wire go into the valve covers like a 426 Hemi, I'm going to get a LOT more views if I call it an Olds Hemi.

Hello Lou, James, Lou, you are with one of the most prolific and standard setting gentlemen in the hobby. I am glad you and James have hooked up. Many of the features in the restoration/build you will never see; that is how far this went beyond a normal restoration. As an example, the trim work inside the seats duplicates the factory to perfection; something that will never be seen. Matching the weld discoloration on the driveshaft is another example of the detail. Then there is the W-43 455 Engine. The work and parts fabrication go beyond belief. Pattern makers, molding specialists and machining experts helped James and his crew bring it all together. A true 1,000-point car. I am happy to have participated in a small way by recreating the chambered tailpipe equipped on this outstanding piece of Oldsmobile Engineering History. Thank you both for sharing this presentation.

I do wish Oldsmobile would of put this engine into production. True the insurance industry was coming down hard on the muscle car - performance with upcoming emission standards, but, Oldsmobile could of produced the W 43 for motorhomes, RVs, and even the boating applications. It is said to be 4 valves per cylinder, special reinforced block w/4 bolt mains, special forged cranks and rods to handle 600 to 700 Hp 455 cubic in motor( really 485 here). The one that got away. Thanks for bringing it up here.

James Kryta of Inline Tube has been one of the heavyweights in keeping Oldsmobile history alive. Olds was doing some wild stuff back around '70 and I remember seeing the Olds experimental engines on the cover of Hot Rod back then. What I wouldn't do to see a real magazine road test of this car to see what could have been. Unfortunately, muscle car magazines seem to be going the way of the W43 Olds- extinct. I was quite fortunate to be a GMI co-op engineering student in 1970 with Oldsmobile Div as my sponsor. I do remember 2 of the W43 engines setting in cradles at the Building 64 dyno labs. It's interesting that GM was doing different experiments with their engines in theirs various divisions. Here's this one you're showing us from Oldsmobile. I'm aware that, around the same time, Buick motor division casted a heavy duty 455 block with 4 bolt mains; of which, only two were produced. But it was being considered for a GS Stage III, which never made it to production. I suppose that GM could foresee the future fuel shortage crisis coming. And who knows what trouble John DeLorean was also giving them at the time. They were also experimenting with the wankel engine around that time. It's just too bad they called off all bets and shut down production on their innovations.

Stunning car...and that Resto is amazing. A W-43...WTF Just awesome. It's like the RAM AIR Pontiacs...no, not the RAIII, RAIV, or even the "regular" Holy Grail RAV - there were SkunkWorks motors from Pontiac too. RA VI & RAVII motors were modified 428s with single and dual quad carbs, supposedly putting out 630-650hp

Awesome story. seems like this is a Tribute car instead of an original built around an incredibly historical engine. If you're recreating manifolds and body tags, you're not working with an original car. It is a beautiful car though. The "S" on the door was not for "Supreme." These were two different trim levels; Cutlass Supreme and Cutlass S. It's amazing how the Cutlass is getting more popular these days. I drove a '70 Cutlass to school in the late '80s, but Camaros were still the most popular. no one ever said "I want an Olds", until they rode in one. My high school friend kept begging me to sell it to him. I see them all over marketplace today and the prices are very high for mediocre condition. I still love them today. '69-'72 were the greatest looking Olds in my opinion. '65-'67 were pretty cool, too. This gut did a great job. If I had it I'd drive the wheels off it.

What was so great years ago was the fact that there was a car for everyone, from large expensive to small inexpensive compact cars. A large Cadillac to a small Falcon with a 6 cylinder 3 speed manual transmission. Alas, gone forever. I dont even enjoy driving anymore, too many drivers that think they're driving Indy cars.

Fine, Lou. You pretty much dropped the mic with this, and if you can top this off with something else, I assume it'll be in the lines of a time machine that you'll use to go back to 1914 and interview Henry F. about his 'Assembly Line' contraption. Sometimes you're annoyingly good at keeping us awake in the dead of night with you videos (just two or three times a week, unfortunately). Fantastic find! Hats off.
