The man who designed many experimental helmets, Bashford Dean, was the arms and armor curator at the Metropolitan Museum. You can see the influence of historical helmets in almost all of his designs.

Wow one can see how various nations later adapted these various helmet designs. Major Basher Dean really had lots of insight, he really was a genius in his field of expertise! Too bad the other designs of the genious insightful, Major Bashford Dean. Who was a Medieval Armor historian were not adapoted. As they were years ahead and obviously used by many countries. With, Major Dean's excellent helmet designs such as the US M5 or the other design which resembled the later Italian M33 helmet. Too bad they were not adapoted. The Liberty Bell helmet "Saucer" shape is what the Swedish M26, Japanese M90 and British M44 adapated also the German experimental M44 looks somewhat similar. I don't understand why the Liberty Bell helmet was so opposed by many American Soldiers, which alledgedy they mocked as a "Fisherman's Hat". As the Liberty Bell helmet looked like it offered more better protection to the wearer then the privious Broadie /Kelly Helmet. However had the Liberty Bell helmet remained there would be a problem with identification with Japanese forces due to the similarities with their Tetsubo M90Helmet. The model 5A or M9 should have been adapted by the US Military. Made with the dual shell system. While there were similarities with the M5A to the German Stahlhelm, there were also clearly differences. The M5A looks like a superior design to the M1. The American 2A looks also superior with it sloping front than the laterer M1. It appears that the M2A design was later taken modified to become the M1 helmet.

I’d like to see a modern rendition of the m8 Ford helmet. Maybe with an internal OLED displays for the eyes, & external cameras in place of the eye slats. And a fitted look, like the Japanese DEVTAC Ronin helmet.
