Nicely done and good topics so far. I have an older FM100 on my RV-9A. After 10 years, it was time to send it back and have him go through and replace old worn out components. Excellent service. FYI, there is a fuel injection class they put on every year. It's on my list and everyone that has attended says it was phenomenal.

Wow, this is genius! I had no idea you could be so accurate with rubber diaphragms and springs. Super interesting
@yeagermcbipper9008
@yeagermcbipper9008 4 жыл бұрын
They really are not accurate. An EFI setup would give better performance, but mechanical systems are fairly simple. Springs and diaphragms all have ranges as they are 'analog' devices. So while a spring may test spot on a 60% compression, at 50% it could give a non-linear result due to the metal/coil etc. That would negatively affect the accuracy of the entire system. It works, it's simple, but there are better ways to meter fuel.

My father use to race a '66 Chevelle that had a 327 w/ mechanical fuel injection and he always won his class at the strip. He said the key was getting the proper combo of vacuum diaphrams and the springs that actuate the valves, needles, etc. Every one at the strip thought my father was somehow cheating, as there were constant complaints from the other drivers. They could never find any violation and, of cousre, there was always the walk-off cursing. My father finally stopped going because of all the crap from the other drivers, which steered me away from ever going to a strip myself.

Naw you really don't, EFI is way more precise. I don't think anyone would much like the starting, operation, economy and driveability of mechanical fuel injection on a ground vehicle. I think it sure is nice to just turn the key and go, you don't need to touch the throttle or anything with the EFI systems we have on our ground vehicles today. Aviation technology is decades behind in those respects, unless we talk about the computer controlled 900 series Rotax aircraft engines and they are more advanced and way more economical to run than the legacy aircraft engines. Just like the old mechanical Corvette fuel injection and GM didn't produce it for very long because it didn't work that good on the street. For an all out race car it's fine, like a mechanicaly injected engine on methanol in a Sprint car that has an injector stack for each cylinder and delivers mass quantities of fuel and air to make big power for the track, and they work best at wide open throttle for thirty or so laps on a half mile or shorter track. So you see no, not so much. In my opinion...

Yes that was very interesting Bryan, despite what I said in my prior post, I as well would have liked to have heard more specifics but yeah it no doubt could have easily taken an hour or more. 👍

@@429thunderjet2 - I hear that from everybody, but as a mechanic, I prefer carburetion. When tuned right, I can get a carbureted engine to perform very close to as good as FI as far as fuel economy goes, but with MUCH faster throttle response. Just takes a bit more effort to do so. Most of the issues with the 'Vette's mechanical FI were cold-start related (and a failure prone vacuum device used for a cranking signal), and I'm sure it cost GM quite a bit more than a carburetor. It was that and it's limited numbers that killed it. The system right here for aircraft is FAR superior to that system in every way. I'd rather have this on a modern car than failure prone electronics.
@EatPezzzz
@EatPezzzz 4 жыл бұрын
@@SmittySmithsonite Don't know what you're talking about "failure prone to electronics". I've done LS swaps for the last 20 years. It's VERY rare to have an electrical failure, and if you do the whole engine doesn't shut down, it just runs bad until you plug in a scanner and check it out. So much easier than dealing with carbs, mixture issues, distributors, and generally, 70 year old engine designs.

Great subject! Good Q&A. Some other comments/questions that would have been nice.... - at the beginning ask him how he got started in this business, did he start it himself or did he purchase it. Great opportunity to ask questions like that and better undrrstand AirflowPerf Co. - while he described all the complex parts req’d for mech FI, would have been interesting to ask him to compare his product to an alternative like electronic fuel inj(EFI). - minor question I would have asked is if the supplied injectors/nozzles are balanced or confirmed they have even fuel flow. Thx for making these vids! -

Thank You for watching! Honestly I would love to go longer and deeper into subject matter, but then most people will not CLICK on a video that is more than 20min long, and especially not 30min-60min. So I try to keep these short and to the point where possible. I would like to go back and do some "On Aircraft" tuning and see the installation on an Engine etc. .

Hey Dana H I’m not sure if your inquiry was answered by the poster or not but my two cents about the nozzles being balanced or analyzed for flow characteristics are that they have they understand the science behind fuel flow, and would verify the proper operation of each mechanical dynamic component for quality control especially because the process is as easy as assembling the system on a test bench and evaluating fuel flow against x fuel pressure at x vacuum. Even in the automotive world flow testing is essential to quality control

Bryan, Peter just put out a video explaining what he’ll be posting during flight testing. I think he was answering my question regarding videoing flight testing. I believe he was directing these answers to us both because he mentioned before that he wasn’t going to put out videos during the flight test and no one else asked this question or even mentioned it. So I guess the answer is that he is not interested in having you come down to video any of his flight testing. What if you just showed up to Cherokee Airport and started videoing his flight testing. Don’t know if you would need the airports permission?? Lol.. No I wouldn’t unless invited!!! I tried to get a answer but I guess in a round about way he gave us one. Sorry I tried. 😞

How does the flow-divider prioritize fuel to the port that is in the intake phase? It can't possibly run like a slave spark.

Because I'm no expert!!! I would have asked if there is or isn't a fix or change needed to the fuel flow calibration with regards to those that want to run 98 octane. The spacific gravity of 100LL is 68-74 API and 98oct is around 84 or maybe I'm just over thinking it haha

It really depends on what ratio you want to obtain. That would determine the jet size. The fuel is pressurized, so flow it not really a problem.

The 3 biggest wants for my certified O-320 are: > TBI > EI > GAMI100UL. It’ll run like a new engine and be super reliable with those improvements. It’s shocking how the FAA has kept certified engines in the Stone Age for ‘safety’ 👎🏻

Icing occurs in a carburettor due to the rapid pressure drop of the air travelling over the venturi, little to do with fuel entering. A carb requires a low pressure to pull fuel in as it is not supplied by a pump, it uses atmospheric pressure to push it in. This injection system uses what is essentially pitot tubes to reference pressure. 100% duty cycle fuel injection is very old, it serves little benefit over a carburettor. It is basically the same as having individuals carbs. Sequential injection is far better as it only injects fuel at the time of the intake valve being open, preventing fuel stand off. Mechanical sequential injection has been around since the 1930's which is more advanced than this, no different to diesel injection. EFI is far better than all of this, simpler, lighter, cheaper, better atomisation and far more accurate.
