So this premise is exactly how I started my business six years ago. Same story, started with one storage locker, then scaled up to five, as proof of concept dictated that I needed more space. Then decided to lease a 960 sq ft commercial building and get out of the storage lockers for my own, and my customers’ convenience. And now, two moves and six years later, my business Gideon’s Gallery is well established, and occupying a 5,100 sq ft building in Syracuse NY with 3 employees. Hearing you talk about this was like reading a page out of my own story, neat stuff! Cool of you to share this with everyone!

So the stuff you sell in your shop, are you getting it from like craigslist and FB marketplace? How did you acquire so much inventory and is this a type of business with a slow ROI?
@JoshamungasRex
@JoshamungasRex 4 жыл бұрын
In the beginning the money was much better to be honest, because it was really only me, and virtually my only overhead was the storage lockers I paid for. The way my business has evolved it has definitely turned into a much slower ROI, but it's because I planted my feet and decided to do this as a career move. In the beginning, before I made the contacts I have now, I would acquire furniture by looking for deals at garage sales, Craigslist, and local auctions. I would buy with my gut when I felt there was money left on a piece. And at first, there was definitely some trial and error. But like Ryan Pineda mentioned, you develop an eye and understanding of how, and what to buy. Additionally, stores like Goodwill and the Salvation Army were always worth checking for neat items with money left to be made on the backside. I came into this business with about 10 years of selling just about anything on eBay. I was an avid garage sale-er and always looking for ways to supplement income. Obviously not everyone has that background going in, but I had a fundamental understanding of how to flip items and what to generally look for. The furniture was just a shift from dealing only with small ebay-able items into trying something new and seeing how it worked. I have always looked at buying and selling used furniture as somewhat recession proof in the sense that among the many constants in life, people will always move and people will pass away. And there is a void that exists in between those two constants which leaves room for someone to find a way to make a few extra dollars while providing a service to those people. That and the fact that especially in a time like now, as we navigate through a pandemic, people are trying their best to stretch the dollar and shopping secondhand is a great way to do that.

Watched this video about a week ago. I’ve sold many things on marketplace and Craigslist, and this made perfect sense. I have a truck, access to a washer and steam cleaner, so I thought I may as well try it out. Found the perfect sectional for $150 the same night I watched this. Picked it up the next day, cleaned it, relisted for $500 and it sold within 2 hours. $350 profit for one couch. Going to use my garage and flip one at a time, can probably flip one every 3-4 days. Appreciate the video, great side hustle!!

My Dad started doing this as his "side hustle" in his 20s in the 1970s. No electronic or internet buying or selling platforms of course, but plenty of large weekly printed classifieds publications where he would source his products (books, vinyl records, toys, sporting goods) to flip. He was very successful at it, plus with markets and garage sales. We used to do it with him as kids in the 70s, 80s and 90s. He only really retired from it all not too long ago (and my mum was an eBay power seller in her categories). She'd buy stuff in her category for as little as a few cents that *each* resold for $50 or more. My wife's Dad was the same, but mainly with vintage jewellery, right up until his passing last year. You can be *any* age and have a great side hustle.

$8000/mo at $200/couch is 40 couches a month. So that's like 2 couches each work day five days a week. So you gotta find the couches, that's at least half an hour searching and half an hour buying and picking each one up, and then you clean them up and take pictures, that's like half an hour each, then at least half an hour each on selling them, meeting people etc, then half an hour on each delivery. So we're at about 2.5 hours per couch minimum and you probably can't scale much beyond 40 couches a month by yourself, but if you can get your avg profit margin to $250 and keep your time invested to that 2.5hr minimum, that's $100/hr before fixed costs (storage & truck). Certainly beats driving for Uber, and if a couch is a pain and takes twice as long you're still making more per hour than most jobs.

@@JPhamJun I love my tacoma. Early 2000's with the 6' bed are great. Those trucks last 300k plus and you can get them for pretty inexpensive. If i were you start finding free stuff in your area and just sell it for cheap. Just random stuff, I did this at the beginning and made about 1k my first week if you do that save that money for a few weeks now you have enough to buy a truck. Then start picking up free couches. Don't start investing your money into couches until you see its good in your area. But with a truck you can help people move, post ads for moving or hauling stuff to the dump. Anything, landscaping, the list never ends what you can do with a truck

How is it going? I’m 18 and going to college but have always ran side businesses throughout highschool, summers I would charge 20-50 to clean window wells(always had business), I would flip candy bars at school(easy $100 a week just by being present in class and school and people knew where to find me) tried to flip a Chevy Malibu with the money I was making (lost $500 and knew I had to be more experienced to do it) I learned how to cut hair and make a cut $60 a week for the past 8 months on servicing 3 clients usually in one day for a week and could make more if I promoted it more, the past few months I’ve been studying the market though... I’m genuinely interested in how well it does I feel I could potentially have this as a stream of income along with other hustles

Ivan Scarpino I love your work ethic bro I honestly wish I had friends like you. I never met someone around my age that was as hungry and motivated as myself. I’m actually 22 now but I’ve been the same way throughout my life you my friend actually have a lot more on your resume then I did at your age so I’m excited to hear where you end up. I’ve always been hungry to make money as a entrepreneur just didn’t know how to do it exactly until recently. The In home daycare business is booming we started this because my wife and I were having a baby and wanted to find a way to be there for her and this was the smartest idea we’ve ever had and we actually never made this much money working a 9-5 which is mind blowing to us. Before Covid hit we were making roughly 6k - 7k a month which is 72k - 84k annually where I come from this is a lot of cheddar cheese especially with the fact that we don’t have to answer to anyone but God 🙏 we are a family of Faith. But then Covid hit we dropped down to 4K - 5.5k monthly which isn’t bad compared to millions losing there jobs but now we are expecting to hit 9k + this month of August to get even close to 10k in one month is mind blowing to me. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot more opportunity to grow and expand but man I’ve never had this much money growing up. So we are definitely blessed and very thankful with the flip a couch business it actually brings in good money too but I’ve been so busy haven’t had time to work on it. As of right now the most we made profit off of Flip a couch business was 1.2k in the month of June I believe but that was completely side hustle work. Keep grinding bro! My motto since high school to myself was “never settle” be Humble, be great full, but don’t settle because the moment you settle is the moment you will never pass that position you are in. Does that make sense ? If you settle now you won’t see how great something could have been. Nevertheless you are on the right track. My one and only advise to you is to put God First and you truly will be unstoppable. The Bible tells us with man things are limited but with God anything is possible. So when you have the love of God flowing inside of you literally anything is possible God bless you bro! And what’s your IG would love to add you and stay in touch if your coo with that? It’s good to surround yourself with business minded people.

I LOVE hearing things like this!! I grew up selling/flipping things for extra money. It just seemed like an obvious side hustle and gives you a little rush when you actually make a profit. So many people would give a little side eye or think it was weird. So glad there's more people sharing their experiences and how they got started 👍🏽👍🏽

I figured this out this week when my wife and I sold our couches that we had owned for two years for almost the same as what we paid for them new! We then used that money plus $130 more to upgrade to a way nicer reclining couch. The first couches sold within a day or two and we didn't even have to haggle with the buyers! It's solid side hustle for sure!

I'm not buying it as a viable business. People are NOT spending a lot of money on used anything! I have tried selling brand new expensive items only to be offered a couple of dollars, and I'm not the only one. My favorite part of Storage Wars is when they go through the units and talk about how much they're going to get for ratty old furniture and used appliances. I laugh because everything can be had new for a few dollars more, ain't nobody buying old crap for that kind of money!
@ftsmallwood
@ftsmallwood 4 жыл бұрын
@@sharonm.2453 Yes, but it depends on the type of item. Some type new items just don't hold their value. For the most part, good new furniture in the store costs big money. Sure, you can buy the cheap stuff, but it won't last and is junk.

Pro tip (I do this when I have the space) search estate sales. I've gotten couches/chairs for $10. Sadly the owners are often elderly, so the couches are not as used and the families don't want to deal with the headache of moving a couch, especially out of state.

My wife was unemployed for a month until she was starting her new job at one point and then later I ended up being unemployed after she started her job. During both these times we would pick up cheap or free things from marketplace and would sell it. This helped us stay up to date on our bills. We stopped once we got back on track but have started again recently to make extra money. It’s helped us a lot with any expenses we would question to make. But now we have the cushion to rely on.

I tried doing this many years ago. You have to pay for storage space for your inventory. Another thing to consider is moving a couch is a 2 man job. You have to pay someone to help you move it twice! When you buy it and when you sell it. Also what if you sell it and try to deliver it but it won't fit through the door? Did you move the couch with your girl friend??

My buddy and I use to flip sofas a ton, we somehow found tons of good quality sofas being thrown out, took them home and cleaned them all up. We priced them all 100+ and offered delivery for another $50 on top and people loved that. At one point we had over a dozen couches stuffed in our house and made a little over 2k selling them in one weekend. Couches are a hidden gem in a mess of junk sales.

@@brayanmarquez8985 hi! I actually did not start with couches, my first item was a gaming chair that was in excellent condition that I had bought for $25 and sold it for $130. It was around $140 brand new. Then I began to get more items that did not occupy a lot of space since I live in a small apartment. My tip is to try to look for items that are in great shape ( no tears, stains, scratches, etc) clean them a little, take really good pictures, provide a good description and post it online. Facebook marketplace is a good place to start. From there you'll see what items sell more than others, target the ones you sell faster so you don't accumulate too many for long periods of time. I hope that works, keep us updated! And lastly, do not be afraid of buying items, the first one is always the scariest but it comes at a great reward!

What to do to start: 1. Pick what you want to sell. 10:53 • Make sure it is something people are selling _daily._ 2. Research the value. 11:39 • Higher margins (cost-sale ratio) can be better. 3. Make sure it's convenient for both seller and buyer. 12:22 • Convenience can help provide discounts for yourself. • Free delivery can be a powerful convenience. A few tips when looking for inventory: • When looking for deals, search multiple key words. 13:33 • Pay extra for convenience. 14:20
