I stayed at The Luxor this past August and having not known about the existence of the big piece, I went to the titanic exhibit expecting a collection of tea cups and passports. When I saw the big piece I initially assumed it was a replica. When I read that it was in fact real, I had to ask an employee just to be sure. It was the highlight of that trip.

There is also a "Small Piece." I don't recall if it was raised at the same time as the Big Piece or not. It was sent to a metallurgical lab at, I believe, Missouri State University in Rolla for analysis. A friend of mine, a Titanic researcher named Paul Grote, went to see the piece and got to handle it. He sent me a fragment of the hanky he used to wipe the rust off his hands in an envelope smudged with the same rust and with a little arrow drawn on it by him with the words "Titanic rust."

As a las vegas native the big piece is one of my favorite things to see. Its not advertised to tourist as a money grab like everything else is. Your ticket has the story of a passenger on it and at the end you get to look through the list on the wall to see if your passenger survived or not... (My passenger survived. I regret losing my ticket as i dont remember his name now) but it was very humbling experience. The big piece is like the last thing you see on the walk through. One exhibit you have to stick your hand into a pool of water that was the same temperature as the ocean that the passengers died in it was very emotional for me. Its a very respectful and educational experience.

The wreck site is better described as a memorial site and not a graveyard. There are no bodies remaining in the wreckage, ocean scavengers, the oxygen in the water flow as well as the pressure is enough to destroy any trace of remains. Especially with 100 years+ to do it. Leather boots are treated so of course those will survive longer than a decomposing body at the bottom of the ocean
@BradfordGuy5 жыл бұрын
I believe it is still considered a tomb and treated as such, even though the bodies no longer reside there; maybe a bit human remains still within the ocean floor - what would be dust, on dry land. You can see the clothes and boots though, obviously where the bodies had lain for decades. A very eerie and sobering sight. I cannot imagine what those people went through, on that cold, still night.
@hannahoffman31044 жыл бұрын
Well the bodies in a “regular” graveyard also decompose so I don’t see why that specifically would dequalify the titanic as a graveyard

Jessica Ayala In 2003 they pulled up a teapot and fused to the bottom of it was an engagement ring with a finger bone still in it... There’s preserved bodies under the detritus.
@Jimmy_Sullivan4 жыл бұрын
Also, the vast majority of those who died, died of hypothermia on the surface of the ocean, where it sank. I think the wreck site should be protected from looters and artifact hunters and the recovered items shouldn't be sold to private collections, but we still should try to recover and preserve as many artifacts as we can and put them in museums. As this video mentioned, these artifacts will be in a few decades the only things left of the ship.

I just subbed. The guy has a good voice and good scripts. He's quite funny without seeming to try to be funny, if you get my meaning. His videos have been coming up on my recommended viewing for a while but I wasn't that interested. If he is coming up on a lot more people's lists he will rocket in subs pretty quickly. Biggest one I ever saw was iDubbbz. When I subbed to him he has 130,000 ( roughly ) and in less than 9 months later he has over 2 million and has videos that have over 10 million views. Guess KZbin can make some people rich after all . . .

They brought this piece to Chicago at the museum of science and industry. It was a exhibit and you pretty much got a card in the beginning that said who you were what your class was and why you were on the ship. You then get to see actual artifacts and the big piece that they allowed you to touch. And at the end you checked the wall to see if you aka your person lived or died. And they people you got to be were actual passengers. It was super cool to experience that.

I remember watching a documentary on the Titanic and they had a major portion of it where they covered the raising of this piece and it resting on the bottom of the ocean again. Always bummed me out because I thought they'd never get it. It makes me happy to know that it actually did get brought up finally.

Lucas Versteegh yeah, it would be nice to have all three still up and running. Or even in museums. There's also a lot of controversy about if it's the Titanic lying on the bottom of the sea bed.

I've heard some speculation that the RMS Britannic could be raised. Despite the bow being crumpled, the ship is intact and in far better condition than the Titanic.

I subbed your channel on the grounds that I like your narration delivery style. There's just not enough mirth on this subject elsewhere on the 'Tube. Back in 1991/2 I did a massive research job for a stage play about the 1912 BoT Court of Inquiry into The Loss of RMS Titantic because, being the 80th anniversary of the disaster, the British (Maritime section) Board of Trade reopened their 1912 inquiry with respect to Captain Lord and the Californian - because the 1985 Ballard expedition had found the exact location of the wreck site, the BoT were able to conclude that Captain Lord was much further away from Titanic than previously thought. Hurrah! Captain Lord is innocent! ... of a crime which didn't exist in 1912 ... But despite the BoT 1992 ruling (in the Public Record Office) folk still bleat on about Captain Lord's 'guilt' of not going to the aid of Titanic and saving everyone on board, even though his ship was trapped in an ice field. I read somewhere recently (2018) that, back in the day, Lord should have been horse whipped. The first night of the stage play was April 14th 1992 and those jolly nice chaps at the BoT phoned the theatre an hour before curtain-up so we could make hurried script changes. Years later I discovered a distant relation was (allegedly) on Titanic ... but wasn't amongst the saved. As for the 20-ton lump, I remember seeing that on the local news swinging unsteadily on the end of a hawser wondering why anyone would desicrate a grave just to prove a point of which we already know the result. When Officer Herbert Lightoller was asked a long and rambling question by Sen. Smith at the American Inquiry he replied, "The result, Sir, was she sank."

When I was 6, which is around when I was obsessed with the titanic, we went to the traveling exhibit that had the big piece; I think it was shortly after they recovered it. I dont remember much from that trip, other than the warm glow of the incandescent lights outside of the big tent they had the exhibit in, and the fact that one of the staff let me go under the rope and touch it. They still had water misting on it, to keep the oxygen in the air from rusting the steel (the water at the bottom of the Atlantic is pretty oxygen deprived, which is part of the reason the ship has remained in such good condition). Such an amazing and tragic story.

It's rather surprising to me that the Titanic was "accidently" found by the US while looking for the USS Thresher. That is to say, Ballard was being paid to locate the wreckage of the Thresher, but also wanted to find the Titanic. There's a rather interesting documentary on here about him and his status as a wreck finder for those interested.

why were the Americans allowed to take the piece it should be on display in the Titanic Museum in Belfast.

It was actually Titanic I.N.C who funded it, who are an English Corporation and as such I has no idea why it's in America in a bloody casino.
@jasonhilton597 жыл бұрын
Kieran Murphy actually rms titanic Inc is over any artifacts including the big piece and funded these dives and are based in Atlanta Georgia USA (my backyard) so that might explain why it's in America. But I hate the thought of it being in a casino and prefer it be where it was born.

I agree with you. The wreck and her artifacts should belong to Belfast. They would treat the wreck better than it has been treated since her discovery.

@@TitanicFan1997 A good portion of the failed salvage attempts were done by Titanic Inc, and British salvage operations looking for treasure. In fact, as I recall, it was a British salvage team that admitted to destroying the crow's nest.

Well, since this is a USA funded company, and initiative, probably never. Americans (stupid term. brazillians are americans too. As are canadians and mexicans.) are not known to be sympathetic towards other disasters that they can't yell about on the street, along with other nationalistic bullshit. ... Yes, i am refering to 9/11, which is sad, 2k people died, but honestly, get the fuck over it. Some documentary about prisons: "Even in this world, post 9/11."
