We use that kind of phrasing a lot in Spanish, it is called "pretérito perfecto" (perfect tense). I've never realized it was mixing future actions with present verbs until now that I hear you explain it in English!
@marinopayan7338
@marinopayan7338 6 ай бұрын

These things are all about the playing the game from 0 to 1 conditionals and vise versa. What is remarkable is the present perfect softly comply with both grammar rules. It is hard to learn separately each tense, because some tenses are secondary, but in groups it becomes much easier. It is a specific of the way how do the British perceive the time.

Your video is invaluable! Since “after” and “when” are giving the similar meaning in the example. I’m wondering whether the word “before” is applicable in this case. If I connect the two sentences with “before”. Will it be correct in term of grammatical point of view. Ex. I will arrive at the school before you have finished your work. I’m hopeful to hear the answer coming from you. Thank you very much!

Hi Greg. It looks like using Conditionals 1 but instead of Present Simple here is Present Perfect. Is the difference between "Can I borrow that book when you have finished..." and "Can I borrow that book when you finish..." that the first option means you can give me the book a day or a month after finishing? But the second one means the minute after you finish? Thank you :)

Same in German where "Futur 2" would just sound so much more complex than the simple "Perfekt" form. "Wenn ich das Buch gelesen habe" > "Wenn ich das Buch gelesen haben werde" Would it even sound reasonable in English to say "I will give you the book once I WILL have finished it"? :D

Some linguists distinguish between time references and verb tense. So speakers can use adverbs to make verb phrases refer to future events eg. "After I have finished my lunch..." but the verb "have" is still present tense (perfect aspect). Some argue English has no future tense as other ways are used to refer to the future. "Will", for example, as a modal, is not a tensed verb.

Hello there. The sentence on bottom is curious. I'm bemused, I don't know whether using after past participle (finished) gerund (reading it), or infinitive (to read it) or present simple (read it). «When you have finished reading it». Greg, give me a hand, would you?

Another example of past to talk about future is something like "If John came to the party, he would have a good time." The party here is in the future. Past tense is used because we don't think he will come.

There is a memory when Dumbledore says to Snape "When you have killed me Severus..." which means what Snape has to do after killing Dumbledore.
