I just had a thought. So, they are the Destiny Islands, plural, because Kairi, Riku, and Sora live on an archipelago, and the main one we see is just an island they go out to to play on. (That is if I am remembering correctly, and I'm pretty sure I am.) They plan to make a raft to escape, and explore the wider world. How do they get to the play island? Do they have a boat? Why are they making a raft? I guess to leave the boat for Tidus, Wakka, and Selphie, and so they don't have to row as much on the open ocean??

I find the plot is less complicated and more absurd giving it the appearance of being overly complicated. At least until DDD. That definitely got wonky but no worse then a lot of popular anime’s. Like so many characters being “sora” is completely absurd, actually seeing it played out in game(s) it makes perfect sense. Vanitas with mask only is created when they split and Ventus was Shell like as heart was weak being fractured then ventus linked hearts with sora and could use a keyblade so Xehonart dump him with Eraqus leading to KHBBS. This link with soras heart link leads to vanitas sharing this connection but at this time sora is still a kid so vanitas wouldn't look like sora as a child but an older version closer to Ventus age. So Vanitas looked like Sora we know ironically before Sora from KH before Sora actually does since BBS is 10 years prior to KH as chronologically the first game

I know people that got into KH much later and the ONLY thing I had to explain to him to understand the main story was what happened in the games he had no interest in playing and even that was just a summary. Kingdom Hearts are games you can just have fun with and understand if you aren't intentionally tyring to confuse yourself. The details are spread out and a lot of lore requires you to do side stuff to learn. But again a lot of that isn't needed to understand the main plot. Again a good example is Xehanort heartless vs pureblood heartless. The fact is heartless with the red heart crest are ones created by Xehanort. Ones without a crest are naturally born. But at no point do you NEED to know this. Again the lore isn't complicated it's just a lot of extra details are spread out. let me put it this way. if ONLY KH1,KH2, chain of memories, Birth by sleep existed then the only plot points you'd have to remove from KH3 to be able to follow it is the existence of Xion and what happened to Sora at the end of Dream Drop distance. that's only 4 games you actually need to follow the main story and aside from reading the ansem reports you don't need to go lore hunting within them. But hey ... how about this. What do you NOT understand about the MAIN story of Kingdom Hearts? I'll answer a few questions and point out which of the 4 games explained them. Again keep in mind I'm just talking the main story not every minor detail about every backstory in the fairly large cast of characters.

No, ventus and Vanitas are not the same person, it was reveal that Vanitas is actually one of the darknesses hundred's of years ago, Vanitas enter Ventus body to control him and kill strelixia who we learn is Marluxia's sister. Ventus then trapps Vanitas inside him making it impossible for him to escape, the reason Vanitas looks like Sora is because of Ventus heart being broken in the begining of Bbs, the longer the darknesses stay inside a heart the more they become influence by the person. Ventus actually hated himself, his own weakness and when they were split, Vanitas took Ventus darkness with him, so a fraction of his heart, when Sora made contact with them he gave Vanitas a form because of the link he created by interacting with Ventus heart since there was already a connection between Vanitas and Ventus. Also when Vanitas was first form after being forced out of Ventus he didn't really have a face it was more a dark mob with red bitty eyes, it wasn't until Sora makes contct with them that Vanitas gains a face. Originally Vanitas didn't have a physical form as the darknesses don't have physical forms.

Actually...clears throat lol. The connection ventus had with sora was at soras birth or around it. Sora help fill his heart when xehanort came to dispose of a comatose ven on destiny Islands. Before this vanitas was formless in his helmet. It was until this moment that he probably took soras form, and this is also shortly before xehanort decided to leave ven with eraqus which was some years before sora was seen as a child in game.

Is not just memories of sora, they are all of his actual memories, since he was slowly losing them during the castle adventure they were being put on her, sora takes a year to wake up because his memories are being reconstructed from 0, which means he never got his original memories back but has a duplicate of them

One way i can go around the mystery of Vanitas's face upon creation, I'd be thinking he was faceless, just a shaped black head with yellow/red pupils and maybe a mouth, and the helmet helped hiding this. Then after Ventus makes the link with Sora's heart, we get the iconic face of Vanitas.

For le there are only 2 options in the Vanitas/Sora looking alike situation. #1 As Sora grew older, he began to look more like Vanitas due to the link he shares with Ventus. A kind of, becoming what they need, situation where Sora reflection of what Ventus lost and still needs. #2 Vanitas face is an omen from the future. Maybe in the sense that another who shares his face will come about that'll link his heart with Ventus and be at the center of events leading into the future KH stories. Maybe even an example of time not exactly being linear in the KH universe given the return of so many characters in KH3.
