When I got back from desert storm, our company told us to go to the auditorium after lunch. Nobody knew what was happening. I ended up getting 4 medals in that ceremony. Army commendation, southeast Asia, good conduct, and national defense. It was the highlight of my short army career. Top 3 accomplishments of my life. After I got out, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait gave us medals for serving. I bought them at a local army navy store. I felt patriotic after 911 and put all of my hardware in a shadow box. It's the nicest thing I own.

My army commendation medal is my proudest award. It was awarded to me for being selected as fort benning rigger of the year. I managed to pack and prepare the most parachutes in one year and unofficially also set the record. Last I checked, the record still stands till this day.

Nice. Got my ARCOM after being in the field for 30 days. I had a license for everything. I volunteered for every detail. Got maybe 3 hours of sleep a night. When I got back to my unit. Was called at attention. Commander gave me my ARCOM and made all of the E3 and under drop and do pushups. He then yelled at them to get their licenses and start volunteering more. For years I was the youngest E4 to ever get a Arcom for just being in the field. Nice story. I take great pride for my Drivers badge out of all of my medals. I kept track of every mile.

As I always like to say, your awards tell a story and those familiar can read it. I’m most proud of my Afghanistan Campaign medal, but my favorite is the National Defense Service Medal. What’s cool about the NDSM, is that you get it for war time service & those who didn’t deploy, still did their bit to support the war effort.

I was with the 91 Cav and 23rd Infantry regiments and got the metorius service medal, two ARCOMs, and the highest award was the soldiers medal. I saved a drowning PFC at Fort Carson and did CPR until first responders arrived. We used to keep on touch, but when I got out 8 years later, he was on track to be a DS at Fort Benning and we fell out of contact.

I've maintained that for almost my whole career and I served 9 years, 1998-2002, 2003-2005, 2007-2009, had some breaks in service here and there but squeezed 9 years in with 6 total deployments 2 of which were in the Balkans. Awards and decrations are interesting. I think you are authorized both the WOGT service and expeditionary matals. I only got the service metal. The overseas service ribbon i dont think you get that due to the fact that there is a service metal for that. You get the ribbon if you are assigned to germany, italy or other countrys. For your MSM you should be able to call your last unit to see if it was approved. If it was truned in then they should have it. I was in on and off from 87 to 02. I got out on a medical. My most important award is my UAE jump wings i got in 96. My next one would be my Italian jump wings i got in 99.

I was company clerk and shared a quonset with several of the S1 clerks who didn't get up for PT one cold December morning in Korea. The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal is for everyone that served during a time period roughly Sept 2001 to 2015ish don't quote me on the dates but you earned it. The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal was given out to those that served in areas that didn't have a campaign medal for that area at the time. So i.e. my first tour in Afghanistan their was no campaign medal to award so I got the Expeditionary Medal. The next tour to Afghanistan I got the new campaign medal for Afghanistan that came out that year. Mostly those in Kuwait got the GWOTEM.

@@christopherchaos You qualify for the GWOT-SM for sure. The GWOT-EM was for those who served in OIF before the ICM was awarded. Once the ICM was awarded, there is the option for choosing one or the other. After Op New Dawn started (2011 or 12), the ICM was no longer awarded and only the GWOT-EM was given out. Given your story, it sounds like you could potentially milk the system to ask for the GWOT-EM for your first deployment and the ICM for your second. But since the ICM was retroactively approved for time served when the GWOT-EM was awarded you are not wrong for only having the ICM. The campaign stars would be on your ICM regardless if you choose the GWOT-EM or not. However, if by example, someone only went to Iraq once and chose the GWOT-EM over the ICM, then they would not have any campaign stars as those only apply to the ICM. Bottom line is that your rack looks correct based on your story. No need to dig into it deeper. - I served 16+ years ending as a Major. I have the GWOT-SM, GWOT-EM (which is authorized additional stars for additional periods of recognized service), and the ICM, among many others. Thank your for your service and service on this channel.

Hey Chris. I am really struggling on what MOS to pick. Thanks to the future soldier prep course, I can finally enlist despite my tape. I was originally planning on 12b, but i scored a 98 on my asvab, and everyone in my family (which includes many, many former infantry marines) want me to chose something in intel or cyber. For context, I have a 4 year degree in game design and worked as a software tester before being laid off this past spring. I've wanted to join since high school, but my size always stopped me. Now that I've got the chance, I'm conflicted. On one hand, I always wanted to be combat adjacent, and 12b seems like a great MOS. It also has a lot shorter training time than many of the signal/intel/cyber MOS's, which matters since I would like to put an OCS packet in when I can, and that whole process takes up to a year and doesn't start until after AIT. So, I've got the desire to be a warfighter and blow stuff up as a 12bravo, but I'm also tech savvy enough to handle anything those more computer related jobs can throw at me, but spending almost a year in AIT sharing a room with 3 other guys doesn't sound like fun, especially being in my later 20s and having already done 5 years of the dorm life in college. (yes, i know barracks are shared too, but from what I've seen you at least get your own bedroom) Any advice you can give would mean a lot.
@christopherchaos
@christopherchaos Жыл бұрын
I think if your intent is to put in for OCS later then find a MOS that you will have fun doing but also one that you would not mind doing if OCS does not work out. There could be a situation that will not allow you to go OCS or you don't make it and IF that does happen you dont want to have to go back to an MOS that you hate. Just be prepared for anything and have a plan for best case scenario and worst case.

Getting an Army Achievement Medal for driving a bus is absolutely insane. Most unit awards are awarded years after the action for which they were nominated and the Army doesn't keep unit rosters so there's no way for them to know who to notify. I saw many of your videos because i was curious what it takes to join the army and how it is to be an enlisted or an officer. I also was curious whats with all that medals. Man, US army awards you with many many medals. In first place i thought it was happening only in movies but thats not true. Moreover you gain ranks every now and then. As an enlisted in Greek army let me share whats happening here. To be an enlisted in the IT department "as i am" it takes at least a bachelor degree from university. In general the ranks we gain are 5. We start as private for 1 or 2 years. It depends if we served as soldiers "all males are obligated to serve here for a year". Then we gain the rank of corporal where we serve for 5 years. Then there is the rank of sarge for another 7 years. Moving on there is the rank of staff sarge where we serve for another 7 years. The next rank is sarge major for another 7 years. Finally before our career come to an end we are awarded the rank of regi sarg major for a month. Lets move to the medals. The amount of medals we get are only 2. These are called "successfull service" or "medals of patience" as olders used to call them, class 1 and 2. Closing let me ask you. Are those medals actually mean anything to you or its something irrelevant? Nice video btw 🇺🇸 🇬🇷 🫡

We all get our complimentary kudos, and haters are going to hate ("no one cares" comment). In the Army, at least, there are the following categories in my mind: Valor awards - 'nuff said, I didn't officially get any. We got an allotment of ARCOM/Vs for Baghdad, and those went to two other junior enlisted. Once approved, when higher asked why the entire squad wasn't submitted, we were told that we'd all earned them, but only two could wear them. Generally speaking, if you see an ARCOM/V, BSM/V, or higher, the Soldier earned it and often should have gotten a higher award but had rank get in the way. Impact awards - in the video, stuff like the bus driving, gate guard, etc. Sometimes these are BS blanket awards handed out because a group of Soldiers pleased the approving authority (AAMs passed out on FOB Shank for those who set up the Crossfit gym for the officers). Sometimes they are for one-off events that deserve individual recognition. Participation awards - campaign, overseas, NCOPDR, etc. "I went there, did that, etc." Gimme awards (depending on service era) - NDSM, ASR, Good Conduct Medal (keep your nose clean), etc. Finally, what I'm most proud of, but is not mentioned in the video: permanent unit awards - earned by the unit while you're serving. My unit (3/187) earned the highest (PUC) while attached to 3ID during the Battle of Baghdad when I was still a PFC. We later got a MUC for service in Northern Iraq. My next unit, The Old Guard, received an ASUA for the Reagan funeral and 2005 Inauguration. I was still with the 101st for the funeral, but there a few months later and marched in the Inaugural Parade. My unit got another MUC in Afghanistan (they were basically hand-outs by then), and my penultimate assignment saw two JMUAs, though since I was assigned to the Army side and not the Joint, I'm not entitled to claim them.

I dont know if I have done anything cool enough for that but that still would require someone to put me in for that. That is not automatic.

Christopher, in regards to this video and the one you did on army medals in general, doing a video on how a plain basic ribbon rack without the NDSM and no combat deployment might possibly look like. Might make a good video for the channel.

I find it ridiculous that the US Military will award people medals for just doing their job properly, as of its a noteworthy achievement. In the British Commonwealth Realm forces this list of medals would only translate to 3 medals. You have to actually go above expectations to be awarded a medal, be deployed to earn campaign medals or special service medals… for the latter 2 aka “I was there medals”.

There’s two types of medals; they’re decorations & service medals. Decorations are awarded for valor, meritorious service, or outstanding achievement. Service medals are for campaigns, good conduct, long service, unit awards, or other category not involving valor or meritorious service. The British have a large number of valor awards, in different degrees, but few service awards. You mock the US awards, but certainly others can mock yours too! Jubilee Medals, come to mind, for starters… However I understand that your condemnation of US awards comes from ignorance & not malice. I would say your awards are incomplete and many British & common wealth service members who served honorably were short changed by lack of recognition.

@@infantryricky6807 just because someone has a critical and/or opposing opinion does not mean it’s out of ignorance. Unlike many people I only hold strong opinions and use strong words when I know what I am talking about. I standby my original comment, it is accurate in its criticism of the US awarding system. BTW, your comment about the jubilee medals smacks of ignorance. If you don’t understand why they are awarded, than you’re just a hypocrite on top of your arrogance. How ironic.

@@James-zg2nl But you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to US awards, that's why I pointed out your ignorance and the fact that you can't accept accurate criticism actually proves you to be the arrogant one. Talk about irony! And yes, I know what I'm talking about with Jubilee medals, I looked it up. It's awarded to service members with at least 5 years of service at the time of the Jubilee (and coronation too). Talk about getting an award for just doing your job! But I know, if the Brits do it, that makes it perfectly logical, honorable and respectable, but it if the Yanks do it, now that's just ridiculous! And guess what, James, the British government agrees with me that their awards system is incomplete, because they just instituted the Humanitarian Medal and the Nuclear Test Medal... Ain't that just rewarding people for doing their job?!? You bet, by your ignorant definition! We Yanks already had medals for those, so you Brits and Commonwealth are copying us! Oh, and the British Ministry of Defense is mulling the creation of their version of the Purple Heart too! I guess you guys are just ridiculous too.

Just got done watching your video. You said you got 4 overseas ribbons. 2 for Korea and 2 for Iraq. But you can't get overseas ribbons for Iraq or Afghanistan. Those are combat tours they are not duty stations.

You can. Per AR 614-30 you can get both the Overseas service ribbon and Iraqi campaign medal if you are there for 11 months or more.
