Luke Kenny aka the berzerker was a drummer for a death metal band. He was in a car accident and banged up his back. He couldn’t drum anymore because of it, and got onto programming drums with industrial hardcore techno. A few years later he gets the idea to bring in what he knew from that genre and mixed it into death metal. Creating a fusion of some of the most extreme genres there are. He went into photography and video production after 2010 or so. Also his girlfriend is in the TATU cover, probably for her for a laugh. It’s all true.

@@superiormusic I know this is the ultimate "boomer" comment, but I don't think this generation of metal fans is as concerned over discovering bands from before their time. Could be wrong but its been my impression talking to people today and seeing comments/what bands get followed. All that being said, regarding Berzerker I was talking to a lot of Aussie metal fans at the time, so could be my bias. Still though they definitely were getting some borderline mainstream press, keep in mind another masked band came out right before so they were definitely talked about.

One of my favorite bands of all time, easily. I own their "Principles and Practices" DVD, and have watched it more times than I'd like to admit. Luke's commitment to getting that first album done was absolutely insane, basically bankrupted himself to make it happen. I'm so fucking glad he's finally making music again :)

Speaking of why they abandaoned their masks, as I remember, in one of the interviews he said that those soaked in too much salt from all the sweating, they literally fell apart after a tour. Also, I believe, after the disband Luke was working as a wedding photographer of all things, stating that it was bringing far more money than he ever could doing metal.

My brother made me listen to The Berzerker when I was like 10-12, and my mind was blown. They used to be one of my favourite bands, but it'd probably been close to ten years since I listened to them at all, so this video gave me a huge nostalgia rush. Listening to their self-titled album right now, it's still great. I had no idea they'd reunited, but that's really exciting if they actually get something done.

I found The Berzerker due to my love for Slipknot's IOWA and how Jordison said how Deicide's Legion was his inspiration for extreme drumming during that time, so I found out death metal due to that. I dove further into Roadrunner Records artists but it was limited. I then found Earache Records and checked out everything on their roster, including The Berzerker. I was blown away by how unique they were and how bat shit heavy they were.

What is cool is that luke kenny never forgot about his hardcore side, even before this album was released he released a record called full scale riot as kenny gee and then in 2006 another one called boom breaker in an italian label. He also played in several hardcore and speedcore parties (i think one of them was I Hate Trance) as a DJ with the berzerker stage name as solo project, i literally can't love him enough hahah.

Sam was definitely an unsung hero. If you listen to his first solo album as The Senseless, you can hear riffs that were used in the S/T Berzerker album in their original form as Sam wrote them. Much slower and groovier but still really damn good but that first album from The Senseless also has a big influence from The Berzerker. Well worth checking out of you want a chill version of The Berzerker and to see where some of those insane riffs came from originally... Really hope that 6th album from the boys finally sees the light of day eventually

I love The Berzerker and discovered them back around '99 after getting into Slipknot and masked bands. I think either 'Reality' or 'Forever' was on a magazine covermount CD and that's when I first heard them. A major point not mentioned in this video as to why the music video for 'Reality' was banned was also because of the still images from autopsies. Although supposedly the most extreme band on the planet, I kind of take that with a pinch of salt and see that as a bit of marketing hyperbole. There are definitely bands that have songs I would consider 'heavier' than those of The Berzerker, and although the drums initially seem super fast and impressive, really aren't once you strip away the triggers. There's footage of Gary playing drums both with and without the triggers on the DVD, and it's night and day what you hear. Sure, every note is being played but there's no power behind it and sounds nothing as monstrous as the final mix. Not to mention the fact that if they were so fast, and therefore so hard to duplicate, they wouldn't have gone through a bunch of drummers to play live. Even Luke himself played drums during some early shows and he's just the vocalist. The incompetence on display during the recording of the first album as shown on the DVD also just makes one wonder about the overall proficiency of the band. I get the feeling that much more established extreme metal musicians could have pulled off something equally as precise and brutal with far less effort and fuss. Definitely a unique and cool band, one of my first, but only to take them for what they truly are. I also wish they'd have kept the masks, even though they felt more of a gimmick than Slipknot's, as it leant a level of visualization of what the band sounded like. Once the masks came off, they really just blended into the background of the dozens of extreme metal bands at the time.

I have the 4 easily accessible albums I probably won't bother with the 5th because of the crazy price of it. I came across The Berzerker on Limewire or Kaazaa around 2002. I was only able to get Cannibal Rights to fully download. At that time it was impossible to find there available cd's anywhere that weren't under $50 because of the damn import fees. It wasn't until about 2015 when I was finally able to get their first two albums for a reasonable price.

I've never been fan of The Berzerker but if you are yourself a fan of this band and metal mixing with extreme electronics in general, you should give a spin to a French band called Lex Talionis. Their music is something like death metal was going martial and orchestral with some speedcore drumming. Their first two albums "Inhuman Violence" and "Supreme Aggression" are more metal oriented, their third and final album "Guitarscreamachine" went in a more electro way but still being extreme in its own way.
