Many New Atheist types use the example of the evil eye to typify superstitious ideas and social behaviour that is irrational. I try to explain the manner in which something like the evil eye can make sense to a modern person.

My son loves to make up super hero’s on little flash cards. He draws the character and then assigns them powers and how much damage each power does. He made a super Mom card. One of her super powers was a disappointed mom glare. It was on of her most damaging powers.

A trip in the poor neighborhoods on the Balkans can show you how seriously people take someone looking at someone in the wrong way. Some people call it the "evil eye." Some call it the "death stare." Some might even call it the "cold shoulder." I like to call it "protestant excommunication."
@raypatson3970
@raypatson3970 2 жыл бұрын
That's not the same. Evil eye is not the same as cold shoulder or death stare. It exists in other cultures like Islam and Hinduism as well. Hindus believe Evil Eye specially emanates from negative emotions like jealously and envy. In a populated and close knit community someone's gaze filled with envy or jealously can cause them to rob you or to gossip about you and destroy your reputation or sabotage you. Instagram and social media is a cesspit to that. People are flashing "perfect life" to others and others feel jealousy, envy, shame, etc. Those negative emotions are like a curse that can eventually come back to bite those who have no humility and flash their wealth or health in a egoistic way. And more often than not, a disaster strikes them and they lose what others envy.

I feel like it's also worth remembering that if somebody is giving you the evil eye glaring at you is probably not the only bad thing they're doing towards you. People talk and up and take other actions against each other that are too small and settle for even them to be consciously aware of. Malice is a really powerful force even if it's so repressed that a dirty look is the only overt manifestation of it.

It's called a Nazar amulet, and I ended up making a mandala to hang in the middle of! :) It's supposed to ward off the evil eye, protect you from it. Glad you mentioned the effect it can have on other people. Imagine you go to work, and walk into the staff room..and say hello to everyone. People say hello, but, one or two people give you the evil eye (and you don't notice)..(but others do)..it sows the seed of doubt in their eyes. Why are they looking at you like that? Did you do something to deserve that look? Are you not to be trusted? They now have a suspicion (no matter how mild) about you which could effect their interactions with you in the future. It would hold more power too..if the person giving the evil eye was in a position of authority.

The evil eye can be applied to a narcissist or psychopath stare. Communities that are more social in person may unconsciously or inherently have the ability to detect evil people and not necessarily evil due to one's past, but because of genetics that cause them to be more cold or self centered. Hence a narcissist or psycopath living in a community.

In narcissistic abuse, this is called gaslighting. You make the victim wonder what they did to get those looks, ("did I offend them? how? what did I do to warrant that?") and then block them from resolving the situation, bring in some "flying monkeys" to confuse and destroy them further. I have seen this happen in a work situation. The victim of this 'look' may be triggered to fight back, and then will be accused of being 'crazy.' This is so common and people have their lives destroyed because someone chooses them to target. It goes way beyond bullying, and the victim cannot report "she looked at me funny" or "no one will talk to me" to HR. In one case, the narcs would stand behnd a person who was seated working, and just look at the back of their head with disgust, and others would notice. If the person being stared at "felt the look' and turned to see, the others would avert their eyes. Crazymaking evil making every day an utter hell.

One has to remember that the ancient Greeks thought that the eyes emitted rays. Plutarch's scientific explanation stated that the eyes were the chief, if not sole, source of the deadly rays that were supposed to spring up like poisoned darts from the inner recesses of a person possessing the evil eye. Plutarch treated the phenomenon of the evil eye as something seemingly inexplicable that is a source of wonder and cause of incredulity. Pliny the Elder described the ability of certain African enchanters to have the "power of fascination with the eyes and can even kill those on whom they fix their gaze". So the "evil eye" has a direct relationship with mesmerism/hypnotism. The phallic charm called fascinum in Latin, from the verb fascinare, "to cast a spell" (the origin of the English word "fascinate") is one example of an apotropaic object used against the evil eye. They have been found throughout Europe and into the Middle East from contexts dating from the first century BC to the fourth century AD. The phallic charms were often objects of personal adornment (such as pendants and finger rings), but also appeared as stone carvings on buildings, mosaics, and wind-chimes (tintinnabula). Examples of stone phallic carvings, such as from Leptis Magna, depict a disembodied phallus attacking an evil eye by ejaculating towards it. In the Aegean Region and other areas where light-colored eyes are relatively rare, people with green eyes, and especially blue eyes, are thought to bestow the curse, intentionally or unintentionally. So watch out .. I've got bright blue eyes! lol. Among those who do not take the evil eye literally, either by reason of the culture in which they were raised or because they simply do not believe it, the phrase, "to give someone the evil eye" usually means simply to glare at the person in anger or disgust. The term has entered into common usage within the English language. Within the broadcasting industry it refers to when a presenter signals to the interviewee or co-presenter to stop talking due to a shortage of time.

You should be very careful of the evil eye sometimes those who stare you straight in the eye are trying to figure you out and are speculating you through previous negative misconcieved prejudice assumptions about who you are whislt not really seeing the real you and still maintaining an intense cold stare filled with hatred. I only pray to God to help protect us from the evil eye and evil spirits who wish to harm us with there inner innate preconcieved hatred. 🌸💕

Appreciate this. I first encountered the ancient notion of evil eye in my mid-twenties during a short mission trip to Equatorial Guinea. Upon my return home, I read "Death by Envy" by Fr. George R. A. Aquaro. Those greatest afflicted by the evil eye are those who cast rather than those targeted. Although ancient ideas about the evil eye were bound up in misinformation regarding the nature of sight, Pageau does a wonderful job of explaining how the psychological effects of "viewing people" can affect both the viewer and viewee in a profoundly real and spiritual sense. I believe I exhibit extremely mild manifestations of scopophobia of which the evil eye explains quite easily.

The impact of social rejection or ostrastasiation is even more potent in a soceity which is only made up of those immediately sorrounding you. To go through something like that may be a fate worse than death, which is likely why the doctrine of forgiveness and theosis is so central to the Christian belief structure. Today with the internet there are whole communities structured online, the physical from and their relationship don't have the impact that they used to. It'd be interesting to go further into the comparison between social rejection and purity spiralling, I think there's room for deep theological rumination in that topic.

I recently had another dream that dealt with the evil eye. I was scared to do something because a man would “put the evil eye on me” if I did it but it felt inevitable. Later I placed something near the man and he was frozen, wouldn’t interact with me. I now realize that was another talisman. I’ve been blown away at how my dreams have been directing me and clarify what I’m confused about. And the more I delve into the symbolism through various avenues, and especially exploring Christianity after years of being atheist, the clearer the lessons/messages become. Thank you for your videos Jonathan, they have been very helpful.

The hyper-analysis of human behavior in contrast to ones own. It reminds me of social anxiety. Also the reminder that the psychologically impaired remain saner than most in this info/tech world we find ourselves haphazardly participating in, i.e. social media.

It is a sort of magic. I do tons of hiring for big teams... When someone wears a nice aesthetically pleasing suit to a job interview, I not only remember them but I think to the level of attention to detail they put into dressing well. Tells me more about them than all the phrases/catchphrases/buzzwords/keywords they memorized and parroted out. And people who pay attention to details tend to do well in a lot of difficult jobs actually. There are people blessed with interview skill and communication/social skills, and they sometimes do horrible in jobs where work needs to be done.

Your description of the evil eye seems eriely similar to my interactions with my uncle. Though I think it might have a lot to do with my own perception. Is it possible to give the evil eye by accident or to perceive the evil eye where it is not?

This is completely true, I had this experience as an 8th grader in jv soccer, one of the coaches never spoke to me and gave me the evil eye ever since the tryouts. I was one of the better players and a starter at the beginning of the season and I ended up having my worst performance that year, unable to play and temporarily losing my passion for the sport. I still have an image of his eyes in my head at 22 y/o

The way I looked at it is that it is a means by which a person looks to someone. Similar to the way you describe it. But basically a means by which you look down on someone or shun them. I was thinking kind of like subtle scarlet letter.

The Eye of Sauron is an interesting subject. It took me a long time to understand Sauron's motivation, but eventually I realised that it's fear. Sauron is frightened (look what happened to his old boss), which is why he wants to see everything, to control everything, to neutralise every threat. Do people who use their eyes to daunt others, as Johnathan describes, have the same motivation?

Interesting. Thanks for your thoughts. No idea if you still go back and read these comments. My question would be (as a Catholic); would you reduce wearing a crucifix, for example, to the purely psychological dimension. I believe both to be true. In the "visible Church", sure psychology is the reason, but in the "invisible Church", what effect does the image of Christ crucified have? What does it mean to ignore this aspect? Thank you.

When you burst forth in laughter during explanations it's as though you are being startled by a revelation that has suddenly been revealed. And yet presumably, you are aware of the truth before the revelation surfaces. It's like singing, you know what singing in key sounds like, it's the manifestation of it that brings delight. Humour - the delight in revelation through manifestation?

cool video Jonathan. let me see if i got this straight, the phenomena of the evil eye describes a somewhat vague and hard to objectively trace act of negatively impacting someones life by creating and propagating a negative perception of them through subtle behavior cues to the target and the surrounding community that manifest in a multitude of ways such as lowering general opinions of the target, or the targets own thoughts being troubled by said perceptions inhibiting confidence, concentration or self actualization. all factors that lead to careless accidents, social relations being negatively distorted and the targets self-worth declining.
@JonathanPageau
@JonathanPageau 5 жыл бұрын
No I don't think it is vague, I think it can be weaponized in a more direct manner and have more devastating effects through technical mastery at levels it is difficult for us to understand in modern cultures. I think that it would not be unthinkable that someone is given the evil eye and dies the next day.
@maggus8847

thanks for clarifying. i admit to having trouble understanding these concepts as my home country where i grew up has a very individualistic, and objective worldview as the norm. If you ever find the interest i would relish hearing more about these phenomena in the context of modern communication tools such as Facebook for example. I think the hyper connected yet dissociative nature of online communication could make for some really interesting reflections regarding changes in how these phenomena manifest.
