One of my favorite things about SCP Foundation is how so many of the SCPs take silly-sounding concepts and realistically depict how dangerous and/or horrifying they would be, and this reading is a prime example of that.

That was getting real intense for a minute there towards the end. I’m very impressed with the author’s ability to be so creative about such a mundane thing as a sack of potatoes. And I was pleasantly surprised that the team was rescued. It seems like all the other stories involving research teams are told through found journals or video footage. I wouldn’t be surprised if a red T-shirt isn’t part of the standard issue of equipment when going on exploration. But I digress, great narrating Gemo thank you.

+ZMmaster One SCP-871 yes it's similar, and also with this SCP there's a vagueness to the origin of the scp. this really is more fascinating than scary. like, it seems as if that entire universe is literally potatoes, but it wasn't always that if remnants of humans are there. maybe they invented a self-cloning potato but couldn't keep the numbers down enough and everyone died off? maybe that universe is just potatoes, of course its possible that its just an area where there are potatoes, seeing as there is oxygen meaning the entire planet must not be covered. but it makes you wonder how there is even a bag that acts like some kind of dimensional entrance, and why the potatoes don't keep growing into our universe.
@screamingcactus17538 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's something in the atmosphere. Some bacteria or virus or toxin that "kills" the potatoes when they pass to the other side of the bag. But that wouldn't explain the root vegetables from the outside of the bag begin replicating when they're introduced. I think it's an enzyme that escaped into the atmosphere on that side and infects any living thing with a similar genetic makeup as a potato, giving it the ability of asexual reproduction.

Beyond the funny "death by potatoes" aspect I have a few ideas about this one. Does anyone remember how the Irish potato famine began? The country began to farm them, and depend on them to a high degree until the disease started to wipe the crops out. The entire country suffered. But what if the people of Ireland could have genetically modified the plants to be resistant. They could become heartier, even seen as the answer to world hunger, if they could even grow without being planted. Replicate them selves at a rapid rate and then be harvested just as rapidly. The catch was that there was no end to the growth and after enough time had passed, this other world destroyed themselves.
@cheesewizard39659 жыл бұрын
Or GRU-Division P are assholes who made a pocket dimension, created the sack, and made infinite potatoes, then destroyed the alternate dimension with potatoes.

spencer davis Definitely possible. The other demension's somewhat familiar things like concrete and the earth, grass and dead tree point to some degree of human presence at some point in the other world. We didn't see enough to know if those traces were a whole other world or just parts of a pocket world to house the unending potatoes
@Fontana227 жыл бұрын

@egglord77367 жыл бұрын
Okay, I have a little theory on how this came to be. I feel like in another universe, a team of scientists invented a way to 'solve world hunger'. And by that, it meant potatoes that grew more potatoes, over and over again. It seemingly went well for a short while, but then there weren't enough people to keep eating them all. Eventually, the situation got so out of hand, they literally suffocated in potatoes. They just covered EVERYTHING. That's probably why they find a bike and a dead tree.

After the reading I was curious if you read the exploration log. I like the hopeful attitude about curing world hunger, but it seems like the people of the 'potato world' tried the same, and it backfired. At that exponential growth 1 potato would become millions in a week. In a year, there would be nothing left... but the mighty spud. Anyway, great as always, Gemo. Can't wait for the next one :)

+AM Clem I think the endless pizza box would be better for ending world hunger, except to people who don't like pizza. Then again, I'm sure stuff like that is contained not because of the harm it causes but the greed it would inspire.
@TheGirlInFandomWorld8 жыл бұрын
So... alternate Earth with a food crisis, hence the dead ground and tree. Someone somewhere takes a basic vegetable, i.e. a potato, and somehow makes a self-replicating form that will never run out. Either the potatoes replicated too fast to control and killed everyone, or the population died out in some other way and the potatoes lived on. Either way, I'm glad the Task Force was okay, I was almost crying by the end. It sounds stupid, but your voice acting was AMAZING.
@Riokushinaku8 жыл бұрын
Well, the grass and trees would naturally die, as they had no source of sunlight.
@TheGirlInFandomWorld8 жыл бұрын
Rio Which begs the qusetion... how far beyond the atmosphere do the potatoes go???
@Riokushinaku8 жыл бұрын
Well, if the potatoes still followed the same rules as normal plant life, the ones that got up high enough would die due to the extreme cold. However, the ones that keep growing underneath would continue to push them up. Theoretically, they could be pouring out into space. However, if this was the case, the atmosphere would no longer be present. So, at the time the exploration team came into this world, the potatoes hadn't fully pushed the atmosphere out. Given the fact that there was also still oxygen left, there should have still been a significant amount of atmosphere remaining. Leading one to believe that the potatoes hadn't piled up too far, relatively speaking.

I think it's because they needed specialized tech to get around and traditionally D-classes are outfitted with stock standard hardware store grade stuff, they don't even get guns. I guess since there wasn't a perceived risk of death to the operatives and the fact that they needed experimental gear meant they didn't want to use the expendables.

My idea as to what happened to the potatoe universe is there was a shortage of potatoes and a scientist genetically modified potatoes to grow at an exponential rate, and thought they had fixed the problem only realizing to late that the potatoes grow to fast to be consumed and they overtook everything, as to how the potatoe sack ended up in our universe is anyones guess.

Personally, I like the bag of holding potatoes, partly because I love potatoes and potato-based dishes. I have a few suggestions for anyone looking for new SCPs to read, ones that they may not have heard of:-SCP-349: This one is called "The Philosopher's Stone and the Graveyard of the Immortals"- it's a graveyard for people who tried to make themselves immortal and features a few famous mythological names like Nicholas Flamel. Also, Death seems to be kind of a dick as he-or whatever killed these guys-has some pretty snarky epitaphs written on the tombstones.-SCP-719: It's a TV that sends a message from some entity that causes people to spontaneously combust. It features the entity "He-Who-Made-the Light" who is a nice subversion of the whole Dark is Evil trope. Seems Light can be evil too.-SCP-1871: The Vorpal Sword, which is a nice shout-out to Alice in Wonderland. Also, it's a vorpal sword for all the D&D nerds too. This one has a personal connection to me as I did a report on the book in my Victorian Lit class.-SCP-1909: This one is the tomb of Alexander the Great. For history buffs, this one is just cool.

I have a theory on this: this "Potatoworld" is an alternate dimension of our world. My theory is that somehow, these humans there managed to create these constantly regenerating potatoes. however, they duplicated infinatly, literaly filling the entire universe. so the same people somehow developed a portal to our world, to get rid of the potatoes, in form of the sack. however, it was too late, and they couldnt do it. but, I noticed how the team managed to find both dead plant life, complex human inventions and a house, but no trace of humans or whats left of them. so, my theory goes that the humans built colonies udnerground. I mean, they could've died out, but considering there doesnt seem to be any corpses, nor do the potatoes fully eradicate objects, it seems more plausable to me
