I recently had code P0019 on my 2013 FPIS. CEL came on after I stopped for fuel. Drove 2 minutes down the highway and same thing loss of power etc, I tapped on top of the valve cover suspecting the vvt was stuck. after I did that it ran normal again. I changed the oil and filter the next day. It has not come on since. However I am thinking about changing it still.

It sounds like the vvt oil control valve stuck on you. Luckily they are relatively easy to do & cheap.

I have 2011 Ford Edge 3.5. Timing chain was replaced along with water pump. After started I got P0018, checked life data and found intake cam in bank 2 has -20 degree, exhaust cam bank 2 +2 degree, bank 1 intake and exhaust +2 degree. Cut open oil filter and it was clean, no metal. Replaced bank 2 solenoid - no luck. Timing was correct, double check it before put everything together. Also when I gas it timing didn't change, same degree in life date. Is that because the car has P0018 code?

Here is the first pinpoint test: "Does the VCTADV PID, VCT_INT_ACT PID or VCT_EXH_ACT PID indicate VCT movement while the VCTADVERR PID or VCT_INT_DIF PID or VCT_EXH_DIF PID maintain close to zero?" If the answer is NO then need to power/ground B2 intake vct solenoid: "Does the engine reduce speed, run rough or stall with the jumper connected?" If the answer is YES "The concern is not present at this time" But you obviously have a problem. Have seen it where the crankshaft pin shears off and when service is done like water pump and timing work it will set codes after. The only way to check that is to remove the crankshaft gear and inspect the pin but you want to make sure you cover all your bases first.

So it won't start? It may have jumped timing and is too far off to start. I would start by running a compression test. If all cylinders are low then you will need to turn engine to top dead center and make sure all the marks line up. Have seen one spin the crankshaft gear throwing the timing off.

Before you spend another minute on it, remove the oil filter and cut it open. If there is any metal then the engine is probably toast. There should be absolutely no debris anywhere in the oiling system. Here is the video of when this one came back:kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHmugZaoZd2Voas&ab_channel=RainCityWrench The cams, and mega cap will require removal for thorough inspection at the very least. If you have a damaged cam journal and have repaired it will still be a ticking time bomb and your money will be thrown away. Have a new or used engine that has a warranty installed. Hate to be the bearer of bad news if it ends up being worst case scenario. Fingers crossed

So what was this part called exactly? Great work!
@raincitywrench1173 жыл бұрын
It can be called a few things: variable cam timing solenoid, vvt oil control valve, variable valve timing actuator. All three are the same thing just depends on what the different manufactures call it. Strange how they can't call it the same name. Oh yea, just looked up the valve on ebay & it says vvt solenoid actuator. LOL

My 14 taurus recently decided to act up. A few days it's was starting hard took 2-3 times more than normal. Then it decided to not start one day after work. It was showing p0016 I change all the cam sensors. It wouldn't start without pumping the gas. When it started it was rough and bogged down. I got it to drive home but it died a few times when stopping but it'd start again with pumping gas. It's throwing p0016, p0018 and p0019 now. I tore motor down to check timing it's still in time. I did the timing chain and water pump about 30k miles ago. Should I do crankshaft senor next or cam phasers?
@raincitywrench117 Жыл бұрын
First thing I would do is cut the oil filter open and visually inspect it real good for debris. If the filter looks good then you will need to get a scope on it and check the desired cam angle vs the actual. If one of the phasers doesn't match then you need to inspect that oil control valve for sticking or metal in the screen. Swap control valves with another to see if the problem switches banks. If all that looks good then sounds like one of the phasers is bad. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHmugZaoZd2Voas&ab_channel=RainCityWrench

@Rain City Wrench I checked the control valves they were clean, and I tested them by opening and closing them by putting power to them. The thing that stumps me is how it went from one code then it went off and then the other 3 popped up. I'm also getting code for weak battery, could this possibly cause this? Is there a way to check the phasers without taking them off?

Bank one is the right side (back firewall side) There are two camshaft sensors sticking out the back of each cylinder head. B1SB would be the outer sensor on right bank. If you have a scanner, here are the first two tests to perform for P0017: "Some vehicles require higher RPM s and loads to actuate the VCT system than others. The VCTADVERR PID , VCT_INT_DIF PID or VCT_EXH_DIF PID should be close to zero whether actuating or not. During rapid VCT movements, the VCTADVERR PID , VCT_INT_DIF PID or VCT_EXH_DIF PID may momentarily deviate from zero. Drive the vehicle while exercising the throttle to generate VCT movement. •Does the VCTADV PID , VCT_INT_ACT PID or VCT_EXH_ACT PID indicate VCT movement while the VCTADVERR PID or VCT_INT_DIF PID or VCT_EXH_DIF PID maintain close to zero?"

Well, you pretty much have to pull the valve cover, remove the oil control valves and inspect for metal debris. If there is any metal then bad news cause it will need an engine. If everything looks good then most likely it has a bad oil control valve. Have codes pulled, if misfires are on one bank then that will be the side to look at. Bank one is the firewall side. Yep, sounds like same problem. If you don't have access to a scanner then I would momentarily ground each bank 2 vct oil control valves to see if the idle speed changes just like in the video. It could be a stuck oil control valve or plugged bank 2 catalytic converter.

If it was mistimed then most likely it would start throwing codes almost immediately but still wouldn't rule out being timed incorrectly. You could have an oil control valve sticking. Will need a scanner to check the cam PIDS. Did you get it figured out?

@raincitywrench1174 жыл бұрын
Most definitely. If one of the phasers is stuck advanced/retarded then it can cause cam/crank correlation codes, rough idle, misfires, etc. If one of the VCT oil control valves is stuck open then it will throw the timing off. With the engine idling, briefly energize each of the left oil control valves like I did in the video. If the engine rpm does not change then something is wrong with that camshaft timing. Will either be a stuck VCT oil control valve or camshaft phaser. Make sure you check for metal contamination like I did in this video and the follow up video. ANY metal at all in the filter or up at the camshaft megacap will be bad news. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHmugZaoZd2Voas&ab_channel=RainCityWrench

A partially plugged catalytic converter on bank two can cause misfires on that bank and low power issues.
