Exploring A Huge Abandoned Religious Juvenile Detention Center

I worked at this facility from 2005-2010. I started on 3rd shift monitoring the kids at night, worked on the Skill Building Unit (building with the cells), and also worked in the medical dept. The facility and land was donated to Holycross by Henry Ford and was originally an orphanage.

in 2008, 9 juveniles were buried ALIVE under the foundation of the chapel approximate location was under the framing of the back door. There is an underground passageway in the wall next to that door that has since been covered over. You walked right by where that opening is and the juvie's skeletal remains are thought to still be down there. In 2014 there was a ceremony held by some of the guards of which I was one and that's all I'm going to say about it. Michigan.

I'm not sure about modern x-ray machines but I'm pretty sure the older machines are required to be secured due to their radioactive contents being very dangerous in the wrong hands. Some people got in trouble because they didn't secure a machine, and some criminals decided to see what was inside.

sure would be great if the useful stuff in those buildings could be donated to places that could use it. I also wonder if they removed the radioactive material from their dental x-ray machine. Hopefully they did cause whoever finds it accidentally gonna regret it.

Why was that place closed? Other than normal maintenance it is really nice. The pool and ping rooms were awesome, my boys and i would have helped ourselves to some late night party gaming back in the day.

@Flat Sign you're wrong in this case. This wasn't "kid jail". This was a facility as an option to actual lock down.

The idea was to give these young people the life skills they needed to function in society/community that they weren't taught at home. The housing was set up as a micro community. School, store, cafeteria etc. Those "time out" rooms were for those who attacked others etc and the unit was used to give them the extra skills they needed to transition back to the micro community & ideally one day leave the entire facility with the skills & education to function in the world.

Because people complain when kids are reprimanded sternly. Kids can call authorities on their parents now and parents have given up, why go to jail, let the kid run amok and become society's problem.

@Flat Sign It should never get to the stage where a child needs anyone but parents to discipline them. The reason these places exist is laws barring parents from doing what is necessary to get a child in line. My dad whipped our asses red with a belt or whatever was handy, my pals that ran rampant over their folks are dead or in prison. I never understood what "This is going to hurt me more than you" meant until I had to aggressively discipline my child and the younger the better. Same thing, my daughter's friends were pregnant or addicted to something or other by the time they were 15. Now children have more rights than a parent concerning discipline, that's backwards.

@Flat Sign ; Actually you make sad and wrong assumptions about Holy Cross Children Services (Boysville of MI). I worked at the campus for many years on two separate occasions. The campus had eleven groups of youth who were housed in a residential group setting. The groups were divided by special learning groups (although almost every youth had an IEP), mental health needs, offense type and there was a sex offender group. All students had access to medical and dental care along with mental health services (including psychiatric services). Youth had daily (M-F) group meetings and attended an onsite school staffed by MI certified teachers and there had been vocational education including auto shop at one point. There were substance abuse groups along with advocacy groups conducted by treatment specialist. Youth had daily activities after school which would include sports, recreation room, movies, fishing, swimming, sledding and so on. Every youth received phone calls once a week and the facility operated a bus service to bring families to campus on Sundays. All families had a family worker who visited them in the community to work on treatment issues and facilitate home visits. In general HCCS / BV was a great organization ran by amazingly committed staff that worked hard to help kids and families throughout MI. The campus in the video is southwest of Saline (MI) and was the largest of several facilities ran by HCCS. The campus is on property given to the Brothers of Holy Cross by Henry Ford and the original maintenance building is building that was originally built by Mr. Ford. The video narrates many places incorrectly because of a lack direct knowledge. The actual home administrative office for HCCS is directly across the street from the campus. I should also note that just north of the first building shown (medical facility and Ommundson dorm) there is a house that was occupied by the director of HCCS Brother Francis. Additionally there is at the front of the facility a large home that was used to provide living accommodations for Brothers if Holy Cross some of whom taught on the campus. The facility is not actually "abandoned" as there is onsite maintenance and there are ongoing "rumors" that one or more groups are in the process of purchasing (or trying to purchase) the property and I hope this occurs before the facility falls further into disrepair.
