Great job! You'll enjoy that little potting shed for years to come and will find an affinity for it because of the hard work restoring it. One thing that I've done with new floors in old shed/barns is to make sure to seal the best you can the space between the floor and the shed walls. otherwise every kind of rodent and snake will make it their home. What I've done is to take 2x4 and cut them to fit between the vertical studs. By laying them on their widest side, you will be flush with the front edge of the stud. By attaching the 2x4 to the wall and floor, you will have effectively joined the walls and floor closing off any points of entry. To make the job easier I use liquid nails construction glue and the job goes really quite quickly.

Fantastic, what a transformation! Traditionally canes were hung in a hammock from the ceiling, in the highest part of the roof. The hammock is simply made from three pieces of garden twine, or stronger string, or even ribbon, if you please. One end, and the central string are fixed and the one at the other end can be undone to more easily insert the canes. This is the most economical use of the space, and is also usually the driest place so they will not suffer from damp or rot.

My husband and son built a 450 sq. ft. 2 story shed out of salvaged wood, stair case, floors, 5 windows, 2 doors with screen and it was meant to be something temporary. It's now been almost 30 yrs. and it is still standing as our work room, potting area and you name it building. The mice are another story, it didn't cost anything but a roof. I love what you did and the cute blue shed and may last you longer then you think. Anyone that gardens need a place for all that it takes to grow a garden. Much goodwill across the pond from Michigan

For the canes, store high up on the back wall on brackets or hung from the roof in loops of ropes. That's how we store ours in the pent roofed shed and in the pitched roofed shed we use the rafters to support the longer items. Good job!!! Xx
@Munchkinzi3 жыл бұрын
Also, just get new felt for the roof, remove the old felt, to let the wood dry out a bit in some prolonged sunnier days and then refelt to definitely ensure no more leaks. We've just done ours and the playhouse in hessian backed felt that we picked up for £5 a roll on fb!!! Even bargain hunting works to save costs but do an amazingly good job at bringing things back to life.x

Looks good, I painted my garden house the same colour. Judging by the natural oil stains coming out of the greyed wood, its built from Red Ceder which is pretty durable, but now you've sealed it with paint it should be fine for a good while. I would suggest adding a gutter and small water butt which will also help with stopping any further rot. Now the frame is secure you can pull out the bottom side planks and replace them. I recently bought a secondhand greenhouse made from red ceder. the wood was also grey and stained - but I hand planed every piece down to reveal as good as new wood underneath. After oiling every piece I rebuilt it - it looks as good as new. I am very glad you took the plunge - its very satisfying to reuse and repair.

Beautiful shed Tanya! Great job! You can put a couple of U hooks in the back of the shed (outside) and rest the bamboo sticks on it. It saves space and they will be protected from water. Also consider building shelves below the existing counter, so you can store pots and other stuff.

Hi Tanya Your shed looks great! Colour is perfect...and with some love and attention (keep up with replacing rotten wood, etc.) there is no reason that the shed should not last another 20 years! Your shed turned out great! I think your color choice was perfect. I’m also a lover of blue. We (husband and I) salvaged a Model A garage when we bought the neighboring property. We moved the old garage on a hay wagon to a temporary location. It sat on the hay wagon for 2 years before we had time to pour a cement foundation and set it in place. It’s now my garden shed or she shed and i love it. Like your project, it took hours and hours of cleaning, repairing wood, and a new split cedar roof. We added a small door and windows since it originally only had huge garage doors on one end. So much work but it was worth it. Love following along on your journey and watching you renovate and refurbish your beautiful property. Thanks for sharing your progress. P. S. I’m from Washington State, USA

We have many toxic snakes plus big snakes that will bite and hurt even if they don't have poison - so while I love the shed and the color is a sparkle of delight in the garden, I would be so afraid each time I walked in looking out for snakes. And spiders! We have black widows, brown widows, and brown recluse that have toxin and are loaded around out home here in Florida. Their egg sacks are under the planks of siding in our home and we run into huge banana spiders as we walk around tall hedges and buildings. I had a large oak snake fall onto me as I walked into our 'playhouse' outside - he had climbed up the wall and onto the top of the door. So while I do want desperately to have a shed, it will be bug tight, and no holes for snakes. I admire your tenacity in using what you have and do love the old shed and can't wait to see the potting bench from pallets, I would constantly be looking out for the spiders and snakes instead of enjoying my day working in the garden. But, seeing what you did is amazing, and I do love old things, character is a big part of that which the new things lack completely. It really is a great addition to your garden and I love the way you can look down onto the greenhouse. A birds perch view!

Tanya, like you I love the colour design of blue with white trim. As for any other suggestions, after the roof is repaired I would paint the inside ceiling white, and install a solar powered light system that will allow you to pot up seeds or bulbs when natural light is not sufficient (early morning, late evening, early spring, late fall, winter, rainy days, etc). I think I would also put the potting-up table on the opposite side you indicate in order to be able to look out at your greenhouse, bushes, trees, flowerbeds, and cats while you work. And perhaps a cheery window-box of pelargoniums, petunias, and potato vines wouldn't go amiss. Love your channel! Greetings from Ontario, Canada...😊

Looking great! I absolutely adore the colors. We were not very happy with our allotment shed originally, but I got so much positive feedback when I filmed a shed tour and we're really not in a position to replace it, so our next step (possibly this winter) will be to paint it in order to preserve it for as long as possible. I don't think bright blue will go over too well with our plot neighbors (we're right on the main path), but I'm very tempted after seeing yours... 😉

We took an old shed and completely redid it, right to the roof. Put in tongue and groove siding inside and out, window boxes on the outside. Divided the back portion in to storage for garden stuff, with a dutch door. I turned it into a craft shop, painted a faux rug at the front door. I loved that spot so much!

Absolutely fabulous what a fantastic makeover and such a wonderful end result. We DIY made a cold frame recently and instead of glass we bought acrylic sheets. I think it was 3mm thick, we ordered it online so it got delivered to us which was great and it looks exactly like glass. Brilliant for custom cutting into your own spaces odd measurements, and much safer than glass, that could be a great solution for your shed glass windows and you could just replace them as and when you need to. It’s great you managed to salvage the shed, my new shed is a second hand one and it’s been painted green with Cuprinol beetroot colour door, the door has new black iron hinges on and I’ve just bought guttering for it. Good tip about gorilla tape to fix the roof, my felt is still watertight but looks messy as has loads of weird battens on it for some reason, and I was going to change it but might try and salvage it for a while by taking off the battens and taping where they were to be sure taking them off doesn’t cause leaks!

I had similar with my shed when I moved in 2 years ago. For the roof, I managed to get some Johnsons felting sealer, it was pricey at £20 a tin, but I managed to give the shed roof 2 coats, only used half a tin. Got it from Screwfix.

I think that was a good save! Love the doors and the amount of windows and light in there. Looks great. The roof still looks damp though. I re-felted the old sheds I inherited and then used corrugated plastic sheets on the top to preserve its life even further. I also added guttering which runs into a few water butts. The amount of water it collects is pretty impressive and the plants do so much better with rainwater.

I recommend painting the floor with floor paint. That will protect the new wood and help it last longer. There are specialist floor paints that are meant to take the wear-and-tear of a floor. They are usually a light gray color. The renovation is great! As long as wood is sound, we should keep it and do just what you have done. The finished shed is charming. It seems it's good to have Josh around. :-)
