Great work Phil! This is the raw and gritty investigative journalism the world needs. Most media refuses to cover topics like this and if they do, they just cover it from a surface level with the intent to put their own spin on it. You go right to the source and give a real view into these issues and you do it without any agenda or aim to influence, but simply to document and show things as they are. In the US most towns have "Big Trash Day", it's like spring cleaning where they will take anything from the side of the road whether its in a bin or not. I lived in a pretty wealthy neighborhood, my family wasn't poor but we weren't as wealthy as those around us. You can imagine how wasteful people in wealthy neighborhoods can be. My dad used to go around on big trash day and collect every decent thing people threw out, especially targeting aluminum such as that found in lawn chairs (not cans). He would recycle all the aluminum at the scrap-yard and pocket like $200-300, then go on to sell the rest of the stuff at the flea market and pocket a few hundred more. He had schedules for big trash pickup and would move onto the next town when it was their turn. He wasn't homeless living on the street, had a normal job, and us 4 kids went to school and were well-fed everyday; He was just super resourceful and knew how to make a quick buck. Early on it was weird, but more and more people started doing it as the years passed, and the friends that came around my house realized how much cool shit could be found and even started doing it themselves. He was like the hipster of trash-picking, doing it way before it was cool, now you're lucky to find anything worth picking for.

@Day-ZDuke4 жыл бұрын
It’s funny, because the real truth of the situation is that society as a whole, ideally, would have a responsibility to help these people If only for the reason that it benefits society as a whole. The damage to property, the medical costs, the jailing, even just the eyesore of it all. But people living this way end up being hugely financially draining to the system as a whole. For each person that was stable and “healthy”, they can then support themselves and contribute to society instead of utilizing social services / tax dollars
@oourdumb4 жыл бұрын
@@Day-ZDuke "Society as a whole" "Ideally". Two assumptions you make that are incorrect. 1. "Society as a whole" is BS. Society is fragmented, it is not a whole. 2. "Ideally". You look at the world through a lense of ideology.
