fun fact: Casino Estoril in Cascais inspired Ian Fleming to write Casino Royal..during WW2 , Portugal was neutral, so Lisbon became the center of espionage during the war, in which British and German spies mingled at the Casino...
@miguelhannes8755 жыл бұрын
Interesting facts about Cascais area: - Biggest casino in Europe - During WW2 it was a spy hub from both axis and allied forces as Portugal was neutral during the war - The Italian, Spanish, Romanian Royal Families were exiled in Cascais for years - Ian Fleming creator of James Bond was a spy during WW2 in this area and he wrote Casino Royale while based here. The first Casino Royale was shot in part in Estoril and Guincho beach - It is originally a fishing town and by the end 19th century became hotspot for aristocrats and wealthy people, still keeping its charm and its fishing activities being one of the biggest fish markets in Portugal - It celebrated 650 years as a town couple years ago - It's one of europe's best sailing destinations having hosted America's Cup arguably the F1 of sailing; also the ISAF world sailing championship and others - It hosts one of the best horseriding championships in the world, the Longines Global Champions Tour for 13 years now - It host the European Tour Golf Portugal Masters - It has one of the most mythical race tracks where there used to be F1 and Moto GP - bikes are returning next couple years its under negotiation - Major surfing and kite surfing destination Probably more but that's it for now : )

Fun facts: 1. James Bond first book, Casino Royal, was written...in Cascais (so Casino Royal is based..in Casino Estoril). 2. Cascais was famous for having/living there ''more kings then 5 Star hotels" (examples: Edward VIII (UK) + Juan Carlos (Spain) + Umberto (Italy) + Carol (Romania), etc)
@pixelised5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I thought it showed they didn't do their homework by saying Cascais isn't super interesting when there's actually so much more than what meets the eye (charming as it might be). It could have just been a pretty former fishermen town but became much more than that… Loads of stories which could have been told and almost mandatory places they didn't visit/show made this vlog a bit underwhelming.

Great job as always guys. Here are some more suggestions... Walk on "paredão" (nice to stop for lunch or a drink around sunset), pick up a bike and ride to "Guía" for another drink. But there's also the non touristy part of Cascais and that includes the historic neighborhood (not where you said it was, it's a little inland), Quinta do pisão (pick your own organic vegetables), cut through the beautiful park near the marina (Marechal Carmona) and walk on the dunes near praia do guincho. And you can explore tiny towns on the way to Cabo de Roca, like Ulgueira. Just more suggestions for another day trip. :)

🤗🇵🇹 👋🏻 3 of the views so far are from me 😉 I went to Cascais twice in my 3 months in Portugal. It’s a beautiful town. The first time was on a whim, with my Step-Mother after we dropped my daughter off at the airport. She has friends who had told her about it... and among her friends it’s known as the Portuguese Riviera. Love that guitar player... big happy smiles! The area was teaming with spies during WWII and did you know that the former King of England and is wife, Wallis Simpson moved there? And, Sir Ian Fleming was inspired by the Palácio in Estoril and it’s really the birth place of James Bond. Fascinating history!

if for you having a soul means being a poor city than maybe yes Lisbon was a poor city in the 90's from your perspective, but Lisbon was wild and untamed back then (watch Wim Wenders "Lisbon story" although I do think you will not like it and call it poor), nowadays is just becoming a big soulless city that has been swallowed by hordes of tourists.

Hello, Loved this video and thank you for showing Cascais area in such a classy fashion. One interesting fact about Cascais is that it is a traditional area for elites vacations, elites like the royal family (when there was one) and during the XX century a lot of European royal families came to Estoril and Cascais after losing their thrones, Giving Estoril, in Cascais municipality, the title of "the graveyard of the European monarchies". In Guincho the "u" is silent. It means squeak, probably due to the squeaky sound the wind makes when it drags the sand through the dunes.

Outstanding drone footage once again *clap clap clap*. PS: Portuguese lesson: you don't read the "u" in "Guincho", or any other word with "gui" (like the town "Guimarães") or "gue" (like "guerra" = war), except for "gua" (like the town "Guarda") where you DO read it. There. That's 80€, please.

GUYS: You skipped the nicest things about Cascais, that was really poor sorry..... As foodies, you were supposed to have something in the marina (or sail even) or other lovely restaurants, Santini, visit the fortress for art galleries or painters' house Casa das Histórias (Paula Rego) and Museu Condes Castro de Guimares , the sea museum or Cascais cultural centre or something. Also gardens, several old palaces, restaurants and a sushi hotel Casa da Guia over the sea worth visiting. You also missed heavily on the History part. Do something about Hotel Palácio in Estoril and the Casino or places to stay like luxury airbnb's or hotels, since you say you love luxury so much...
