And like all other Irish tales, this story is told a thousand different ways and has a thousand differences in each version. It sucks that there is no one true version but it is also great for anyone wanting to write their own story with it.

There was probably at least 4 versions told in the 4 provinces. The Book of Leinster is slightly different in detail than the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of the Four Masters and id imagine the older stories like the Tain had slight differences dependin on who you were telling it to. Id say a bard in Ulster would tell the story slightly different that a bard in Connaught with the host being cast in a more positive light.

That was common. In ancient Ireland every kingdom would depict certains characters as villains or heroes. Lugh is an example. In some version he decides to fight the warriors of Medb while Cu Chulainn rests. In others he just heals his son.

The story is found in the Gundestrup Cauldron, and the original tale goes like this: Donn Tarbh and Fionn Bheannach were once two swineheards, they are gods of wine, agriculture, harvest and beer. An Donn Tarbh represents the season of spring and summer, while the White Bull represents Autumn and Winter. Méabh is actually the goddess of sovereignty, sexuality and ruler of the Middle Realm and all the springs of water. His husband is Aillil another name for Mac Óg (Aonghus) son of An Dagda and Bóbhán. Feargus is actually the equivalent of Poseidon, a God of Oceans and Earth, and king of the Middle Realm. When Cú Chulainn, a god of vegetation, cattle, mankind and thunder realizes that Méabh wants to steal the Black Bull, he chops down an oak tree, and places it between Connaught and Ulaidh, and places as taboo to anyone who dares to cross the border, first needs to jump the oak. Three men trie to jump it with a horse, but they fail. Fraoch (Nuadha, Neachdaine, Ealcmaire) the husband of Bóbhán, crosses the oak with his trumpeters and sons. And faces his father in combat, they both struggle in a river, and finally Cú Chulainn drown the only son he had with Méabh (Aoife). Three days later, Fraoch comes back to life. Méabh steals the Black Bull, and both animals fight, and the Black Bull wins, as a symbol of spring overcoming winter. There is something to clarify, and that is that, Cú Chulainn is not the son of Lugh, but of Conchobhar Mac Nessa and Macha a goddess of horses and rules the Upper Realm with Conchobhar.

I really have a feeling that alot of the Celtic lore, mythology and tales will be used in TES6 High Rock much like Skyrim used alot of Norse mythology. The find a hill become a king quote about High Rock actually points to all the various Kingdoms in Wales, Britain, Scotland, Ireland and Gall.
