Exploring Cumbria - Askham Village on the Lowther Estate

Continuing my exploration of Cumbria, Robert Croser, my guide, has taken me to the beautiful village of Askham.
Askham is a village and civil parish in the Eden District of Cumbria. It is in the historic county of Westmorland. It is situated in the eastern edge of the Lake District National Park, about 5 miles south of Penrith. Nearby are the remains of Lowther Castle, the site of the annual Lowther Show, a three-day event of country pursuits.

Those properties are really solidly built and fit perfectly with their surroundings. I normally feel out of my comfort zone anywhere north of the midlands but the scenery in Cumbria is impressive.

I have been to Penrith then Kensit? The pencil factory. It was closed because of the flooding.keswick sorry.Passed Ullswater on the way .

A beautiful village - probably preserved due to its single ownership. I checked out the lowther estate website and a 3 bed detached house is £800pcm to rent, probably half the price of a similar property in the south east.

This would have been a good vlog if your guide actually knew something about the village Askham has a great history and modern life including a therapy center not a gym. Really doesn't show the village and area at its best and a good guide would have shown that.

my grt grt grandfather jacob thompson was friends with the earl of lonsdale and wordsworth, hes buried in askham graveyard and has painings in the penrith musium. its a beautiful little village. the history would be great but its available online also i guess.

Hi Richard, I did enjoy you video work and some of your narrative about my house and village, But where did you get your co Guide? He had verbal incontinence. Seemed to be making it all up as he went along. And many times he gave the opposite description to the truth, so much off beam it was sad and almost comical. There are many interesting stories about the Lowther Family, and the area, but he knew nothing. At 77 years old it is sad to see the slow destruction of the Lake District its beauty is its demise, 35 years ago Pooley Bridge was a beautiful village now it is dreadful, full of expensive fake eating places. It is 3 years since you produced your video, Askham now is made up of the Lowther family, a diminishing number of locals that cannot afford to live here anymore. the incomers, the second homes and holiday let houses that are now much, much more than the all time residents., holiday cottages and 2nd homes that are often empty for months, like all over the country the locals are being pushed out. In the 70's I was a guide taking coach trips around London, It took many, many hours of research, and to answer some questions I even became a member of the Playboy club in Park Lane. My talking had to match to varying speeds as we progressed through London moving quickly or at a stand still . There were a few pretentious guides like Robert and they use to irritate me. Again Your video work was very good, it is a shame that Robert was so bad. so many missed opportunities lost had he known anything interesting about the Lowther Estate and family, and the village.

Hi Rod, I very appreciate your comment. Unfortunately, my guide appeared to have little or no knowledge of the area that was reliable - others have said so - and I can only apologise for his errors. I hadn't known him long and regret relying on his so-called local knowledge.
