As a long time fan of Dredd and 2000AD this was a joyous movie to watch. They nailed the look of Mega City 1 and it's a full on balls to the wall violent action fest. I have huge respect for Karl Urban for playing Dredd so well too. It was so refreshing to see a well made hard R rated action movie and it reminded me of the 1980's and early to mid 90's when action movies were in their prime. In a world where there are 5 Twilight movies and there are so many shitty horror and comedy movies that get multiple sequels, Dredd 2 deserves to be made.

They didn't hold back on the gore but didn't over do it at the same time and the "Slomo" sequences were amazing. I like an action movie that doesn't need much dialog to get the point across but can still drive the story forward at the same time. I don't know, just appealed to me but I'm a child of the 80's. This movie reminded me of an updated version of an 80's action movie at the end of the day :). Reminded me a lot of Conan the Barbarian, another movie that moves forward, driven primarily by action.

Of all the movies I saw in 2012 -- from big budget Hollywood movies to foreign air-house films -- Dredd was no doubt my favorite. Dredd is everything I wanted out of, say, a Batman movie: instead of setting up this huge situation where a city/world is in peril, just drop the character in a grounded situation and let him/her do what they do best. Not every comic book movie needs to have airships falling from the sky or lasers shooting up into the air. And Dredd proved that. And did so perfectly.

I've been a part of the "Make a Dredd Sequel" community for more than two years now, and have signed the petition and shared it with others as much as possible, recommending everyone I talk to into this type of movie to go give it a watch and buy it if they love it. If Dredd will only be one movie and not getting a sequel, then so be it. I will in that case have to accept it. But that won't stop me from hoping from the bottom of my heart they'll make it a trilogy, and do everything I can to see it happen. But since the first movie just keeps on gaining more and more fans and supporters, there really is no reason why it wouldn't happen.

Yes, agree with you completely. When it was released I was too busy to go to the theater but then later viewed it on Movies on Demand. I instantly regretted missing this film on the big screen and envy anyone who did because of so many astonishing scenes. And I as well did like a lot of things in the 95 Dredd but honestly it was primarily a Stallone movie rather than a Dredd film, mostly a color by numbers action flick for general audiences, nothing too deep or serious. Dredd 2012 went in the opposite direction and shows it was a passion project by everyone involved, truly one of those rare gems among so much cinema slop out there. Sadly it didn't take off at the box office (like Alita), but has developed a loyal fan following. Hey, some great stuff doesn't do well and a lot of garbage sells big. And you also showed an image of John Carter, an example of another great film that didn't do big at the box office.

This movie is gritty, gory, direct, yet colorful, beautiful, and with a very smart character development. My favorite action film.

I think this could also work as a TV show. With Karl and Olivia returning. I would watch it :D

Did you say this movie only had a 45 million dollar budget? Holey crap how did they make such a great movie on such a limited budget?
@narcissus795 жыл бұрын
makes you wonder sometimes huh
@jl.77395 жыл бұрын
PsychoZulu I think it’s because there are no tripple A Hollywoodstars in it. Carl urban and Lena headey are known actors but not huge. imagine it would have been Jason statham as dredd, Scarlett Johansson as the psychic partner etc. Those 45 million would have just been enough to pay the leads. I wouldn’t be surprised if urban even accepted a smaller paycheck to make the movie happen

Karl Urban was made for that role. He gets to be a scowling badass through the whole movie.

I missed DREDD on it's cinema release and I regret it. It is a violent and beautiful masterpiece and one of the best action films of latter days.

I'm not usually a fan of violent movies, but something about Dredd really drew me in and got me to watch it multiple times. It's very well paced, acted and shot.

Awesome, awesome movie. Perfect lines, perfect character depiction. I love when the psychic girl "reads" Dredd. Beautiful lines when he talks through the comms to all the people in the building, great measured words that define the character. Everything works in this movie.

Once I knew that they were Gonna release another Dredd. I knew it was gonna be good. I enjoyed the old one because of Sly. But this is awesome. I would definitely go see a sequel if they ever plan getting to it

Great video! There is such a huge mismatch between what makes a movie commercially successful and what makes it a good film. John Carter, for example, was a decent film considering the source material. I remember thinking at the time that they could have gone any number of ways away from the book and made another faceless modern reboot, but they didn't and I appreciated that. Filled it with useless special effects, though. Thinking about that, I wonder if box office success is truly a reason for studios to make sequels. I mean, if a studio has confidence in a movie, they promote the hell out of it, they make a lot of money anyway because people go and see it before they have a chance to hear how good it really is, and they can make any number of sequels even if the first film tanks, just because they believe in the concept. If they don't have confidence, you get something like Dredd, that people didn't really hear about until it was off the big screen. Isn't that like a self fulfilling prophecy rather than a cool management decision? It would be interesting to graph the profit margin of films together with the occurrence of them getting a sequel.
@GoodBadFlicks10 жыл бұрын
Siderite Zackwehdex I really liked John Carter but the studio majorly dropped the ball on the marketing.
@princeofcupspoc90736 жыл бұрын
I'm tired of films that take characters and plot, but forget the major themes of the source material. You can't make a John Carter film where the characters are clothed. The pulp-nude-titulation is central to the material. The books are brutal and visceral, and very misogynistic, total dick-waving. Hollywood keeps taking tame family-friendly scripts, and buying well known material simply for the title and name recognition. I Robot, The Puppet Masters, etc. Luckily Netflix is still in a place where they don't think every film has to be dumbed down and sanitized for the lowest common denominator.

While I didn't like the film as much as many others did, I totally see the appeal. I think to me, this was more a "laying the foundations"-type movie than anything else that was just begging to be built upon with the world further explored in a sequel. Karl Urban is perfect but the "Die Hard in an X" plot didn't quite do it for me...definitely want a sequel!

I don’t usually go for violent action movies but really liked this film. The catch-22 seems to be if a film flies under a studio’s radar it stands a chance of being left alone and turning out good, but will get no marketing support and flop. If it looks like there’s big money to be made, the studio will pour resources into it but won’t be able to resist the temptation to interfere, and it will turn out compromised and bad. If there was enough studio interest to fund a sequel, I wouldn’t hold out too much hope for it keeping the spirit of this one.

I agree. And make it dark and R-rated this time around. Something more along the lines of the HBO animated series, which was brilliant and fit the tone of the original comic more than the movie did.

Thanks for writing about it -- a cult classic that is probably going to get rediscovered 20 years from now. Wish it didn't have to suffer the same fate as John Carpenter's THE THING. It's a great movie, right up there near ROBOCOP and DIE HARD.

Dredd was as close to perfect as any film I've ever seen. I especially liked the total lack of emotional involvement between the lead characters. That was sooooo refreshing. The movie didn't waste any time. I can watch it again and again without fast forwarding through any scenes.

lol he has a bit in the Mortal Kombat review I think a lot of people missed where Shao Khan comes at the end and says "bow to me" and very quickly a text pops up with "faithfully" at the bottom...got my like, not many people would think of a Morbid Angel reference in an internet review show these days, would go over almost everyone's head...

There is now work for a Dredd series called Mega City One and Karl Urban has said how much he wants to be in it, but will just be happy to have more Dredd adaptations even if he isn't involved.
