Ariane, I’m watching this a few months after the original taped date. Trying to catch up, if that’s even possible... I’ve used the gimp in both the weights you’re using. The green gimp & the silk. Since it’s a cord with wrapped threads around it, it can be a problem threading. I think it’s great you tried using it the way you did with your followers also wanting to see how the stitches worked out using gimp. You’re very cool to do this!! I was thinking your base fabric was expected to be wool, or canvas, which would have been firmer. Someone suggested another layer... Yes, we all agree it’s a mess - a very fun stitching event! Lol! Totally with you! The texture with the gimp, the bullion stitches & knots were great! I agree adding in other threads & stitches will give it an awesome look! Thanks for this!

Thx Linda. Gimp is fun to play with and certainly can be challenging. It’s not a thread I use a lot, but it can be very striking and is great to have around just in case the moment comes when it can be used to good effect. ❤️💕❤️

And I will also say that I loved what you did with it in fact, the variegated bullions are particularly lovely, and I'll give those a go.

I've rarely used gimp threads to stitch with just a variety of thick threads and quickly learnt to use large eyed needles for the hole in the fabric to allow the thread to be pulled through but watching you with the silk gimp well, sometimes life's too short Ariana! Your sampler piece looked very effective and beautiful so worth the effort and I wish my stitching did. Thanks for adding inspiration.

@@ArianeZurcher212 Well done you. Hopefully it will work more smoothly for you off camera! I had similar problems doing a piece of crazy patchwork years ago and didn't use enough variety of needles to pull my choices of threads for the silks, velvets and damask materials I was trying to stitch. I had no needle grabbers or help and really hurt my fingers. Lesson learned the hard way (before arthritis began!). I watched the video of the girl making the lichen from t-shirts and she used watered down acrylic paint to die her fabric. People mentioned alcohol inks in the live stream and I have to tell you that alcohol inks are very intense, saturated colour so they would have to be mixed with a lot of alcohol to make them light enough. I would go with the watered down acrylics or hand dyed fabric.

Yes the alcohol inks are intense. I prefer Caran d’Ache Neo color water soluble pastels.

I found you while doing my many searches for gimp. Gimp was also used to crochet purses back in the 40’s. I’m really struggling to find anyone who makes it anymore. I found the last mill that manufactured it in the US, but sadly they stopped 2 years ago and won’t make it again. The painters gimp is beautiful but it’s way too expensive to use to crochet purses. Either I’m going to find a source to buy some spooled gimp or figure out a way to make it myself. I found Mary’s website and sent her an email. Thanks for any help you can offer. Julie

@@joycebreeden2453 No I didn't have any trouble, but I only used the crinkly cream colored one for couching. I also found, today, as I was playing with it some more, that using a #15 Milliners Needle helps a lot as it makes a larger hole in the fabric and so the gimp slides through without bunching up. I was even able to do a bullion knot and a couple of french knots.

Dear me, I did enjoy you stitching here all those years ago now, especially as I have only couched gimp so far. I'm curious to know why you don't use an embroiderer's awl to ease the way through the fabric, not to cut its fibers but to remake a hole?

Is it really necessary to greet everyone that’s joining in to watch? I think an initial hello is sufficient. It just distracts and is wasting time when I want to learn the stitching. You do a great job, I just don’t think stopping every few seconds to say hello to someone AND where they are from, is necessary….good grief. How about at the end you can thank everyone who joined in, so those of us who don’t want to listen to EVERY SINGLE NAME can stop watching.
