I always get a little teary at the final game with Leshy. "Please, let us continue. We don't need to keep score." He's knows he's moments away from annihilation, but he doesn't care. He just wants to play a few more rounds. Winning, losing, scores; none of it matters to him. None of it ever did. He plays the game because he truly loves it. All he ever cared about was sharing it with you, the player, and in his final moments, that's still all he wants to do. Just a few more rounds.

Another fun bit about Leshy is that Kaycee also has the closest connection with him. When Luke boots the game up for the first time, he's in Leshy's version of Insryption, meaning that Kaycee purposely gave Leshy control of the game. It "soft-locks" the Old_Data beneath the game, because Leshy is probably the only Scribe who would just keep playing the game for the love of it. It takes the efforts of the three other Scribes (and the Player, technically) to overthrow Leshy, which opens the field for another power grab.
@uwuowo2149 ай бұрын
Kaycee didn't actually put him in power though, the angler just sorta did it and the shift happened while Kaycee was freaking out over seeing an immobile npc give itself a walk cycle (the angler)
@soraquestern9 ай бұрын
this is true; in the log entries found in the mod (i completely forgot about those!), she kinda just found Leshy in charge, but instead of reformatting the disk she just built the game with Leshy. They developed a bond and mutual respect for each other. That bond was why Kaycee buried the disk rather than destroy it
@TW-dh5rg9 ай бұрын
Y’know, this makes me think a bit about the Ghoul version of Kaycee. What if the reason it’s there, isn’t a nod by a developer, but a favor for a friend? Like Grimora kept the Ghoul around as a kind of favor for Leshy, sure, this probably isn’t at all true, due to Leshy being in power during Kaycee’s time, but it still kinda is, because we never do see if Kaycee was there before the power grab. I feel like it would make sense if there was a third Underling, one who originally took Royal’s place as a boss, and Grimora instead just placed Kaycee in Royal’s place as the dredger.

Call it a bit of headcanon, but Magnificus also strikes me at having a big issue with actually 'completing' a project, a bit of a perfectionist streak. He's said to have many plans, but he never seems to commit to any of these plans (at least, without the assistance of at least two other scribes) and just is more than happy to continue with creating as much artistry in his little corner of Inscryption. The final 'fight' with him seems to reflect this, all style but suffers with the substance, to the point he can't even shake your hand because he himself put you on a pedestal as part of his attempts to make things even more grandiose. Perhaps the biggest reason his students are in perpetual torment is that he can't quite commit to saying that their task is complete even?

Maybe like every angsty teen, P03 buried his innocent, child like side to seem more cold, calculating, “cool” But as Goobert’s dialogue shows, trying to get rid of the aspects of yourself you see as “lame” “stupid” or “childish” ends up trimming a lot of good aspects too. We see how disagreeable P03 is, maybe he was more likable at one point? Maybe we can tie this to the idea of the scrybes being echos of other characters, Lionel “buried” the first game he made as a child to seem like a child prodigy with Super Weasel Kid, to seem more “cool” Maybe the floppiness is spreading, just an interesting idea ive had since I first saw Golly’s bossfight

Haven't finished the video yet but it's interesting to me how well all four scybes themes tie into each other in different ways. - Leshy is the wild, untamed world. It's beautiful, but painful and full of death, tying Grimora's mechanics into his version of the game. - Grimora is all about death and the remembrance after. Death is seen as cold, an ending, a complete and total failure of the nervous system. It follows pain, but it's also an ending of pain, which is what Magnificus is all about. - Magnificus is all about creation and pain. In a way, it seems like Magnificus might be seeking some kind of eternal life through his research into eternal pain. I think every artist has wanted to create something emotionally powerful that will outlive them, and what's more emotional than the concept of pain itself? While all the Scrybes are artists in some way, Magnificus' themes are most similar to Leshy's (pain is part of life, and it's almost impossible to live a life without pain), and directly stand against P-03 and Grimora. - And P-03 is all about a futuristic world where organic life is nearly moot. There is nothing living left, so there should be no pain or death either. Robots don't have a nervous system with which they can feel pain, but they still run off electricity, they have wires and parts that are almost like nerves and organs. And like we see in The Hex and Inscryption, even programmed beings without bodies can feel emotions like pain. All four are constantly trying to break away from the others, but they're all entangled in each other. Not entirely cyclical, but it's interesting to me.
@poisoncrisp9 ай бұрын
Wait, "Magnificus is all about creation and pain." Isn't that basically about birth? Both if you see it artistically or literally. It ties into eternal life as well, as living through your creations. Makes him more connected to Leshy, because birth means life as well, and it makes sense in that he doesn't hold big ambitions, he just wants the game to continue, just like life keeps on regardless of anything, eternal cycles

@calemr9 ай бұрын
The thing I always found most interesting about the scribes is the ideas behind game design that they represent. The kinds of game devs that they are, and how far each of those methods can go towards making a good game, and a bad one. Leshy's focus on story and setting and themes carry him very well, but it's easy to make broken, overpowered builds that could make it too easy. A lot of games can manage to get major, dedicated cult followings with this focus, and people Love playing his chapter. His gameplay plays into this, and the way story and setting links in to backstory and lore means Grimora's mechanics also come into play for his chapter. And the blood and bone mechanics aim to be flavourful and "make sense", because that is important to him. He will complain if you use a stinkbug to negate the moon's attacks because that's Silly, and mechanics are less important to him. Grimora's focus is on lore, and backstory, which makes the fact that she's the scribe people often pick as the one they wish had gotten their own chapter, wanting more knowledge and understanding of something we see only partially, is very appropriate. Her gameplay obviously uses this, Literally building upon the bones of what came before, using undead creatures that crawled up from out of the foundations. P03's raw mechanics focus, an aim to make something with excellent gameplay, while discarding things like theme and story. While this can get people to play short term, over time, it gets boring. A common complaint about P03's chapter, which is alleviated in Inscryption by the story Outside P03's game. His gameplay includes building your own cards, constructing the mechanics in the best ways to abuse them, ignoring if it makes any kind of sense for "Mr. Toot Man" to have bifurcated and annoying, because all that matters is the Rules and how to use them to Win. And Magnificus, the Tortured Artist, who wants to do Everything, to use Every idea, make it Perfect. Magnificus' game would never be released, it would, at "Best" wind up in an endless open beta, where people talk about how it has potential, but it never gets finished. Much like his attempt to get a handshake at the end, his refusal to just be Done already means never he gets to complete it, and never move on. The gameplay of his cards in chapter 2 requires you to get the right cards, and can create Very powerful combinations, but is very prone to bricking. While sometimes it can do wonderful things, it often doesn't. It also features a fair bit of draw, perhaps linking into wanting Everything: Let me see ALL my cards, grab all my combo pieces, because if I can just get them all in the right place it will work!

I also find it interesting how their methods of Inscryption tie into their philosophies. Leshy takes pictures of nature. Mostly, we see it used to take pictures of creatures to turn into cards, but photography can also be used to capture landscapes, structures, even moments in time. It perfectly matches with Leshy's focus on lore and the world. Grimoira's quill which she uses to write epitaphs embodies her focus on characters, which to me is what separates her from Leshy. Not that Leshy neglects his characters, but when you get past his beautiful descriptions, his story is actually pretty simple; you’re just some person in the woods trying to survive, and when you beat him, your only prizes are a pile of meat that would allow you to live another day. Grimoira, on the other hand, seems to prioritize her character’s desires and motivations above all else. While she doesn’t get a full chapter, notably the character she attempts to give a boss battle to is Royal Dominguez, the one who wanted to be a boss the most out of her ghouls. Epitaphs are centered around the people who died and are written to commemorate them. Her tool could’ve been a stereotypical scythe, or some kind of necromancer staff, but a quill embodies her character perfectly. PO3’s scanner converts robots into cards, which fits his focus on mechanics and optimization. He’s very pragmatic and prioritizes function over form. He doesn’t care if the story of his game is half-assed and barely exists, as long as it’s enough to get the player to complete the Great Transcendence. Magnificus’ paintbrush embodies creativity, and notably, it is the only “Inscrybing tool” implied to have abilities outside of Inscrybing, as the Act 2 opening cutscene seems to depict Magnificus using it to turn the Goo Mage into goo. The paintbrush embodies infinite possibilities, which could tie into how Magnificus doesn’t seem to have an actual concept of what his version of Inscryption would be.

I dont know if this has been brought up but in both Leshy and PO3's version of inscryption refer to Magnificus as "Stunted Wolf" and "Unfinished" when referencing him makes me wonder that he may have been the last scrybe worked on in development. His level at the end also being ??? could be that it was never worked on long enough. Also out of all of the scrybes being the one most unwilling to let go as he still feels he has more to be. Perhaps he is trying to "develop" his students as he wishes he was "completed."

One of the most interesting things I noticed about P03's inscryption a few days ago was how the community holds a loose acknowledgement that P03's act kind of... drags. Poorly paced, long and kind of boring mechanics, and halfassed lore. All of that serves to actually reinforce, i feel, the things the game is saying about game design and how "perfectly balanced" doesn't necessarily mean "good", especially in the realm of a roguelite -- the excitement of "will I get fucked over by RNG or not, and how can I hedge my bets against such", is where a lot of the enjoyment comes, for me and many others I believe.

I also like to think the fact that Sado messed with the game code, Grimora messes with the code of life and death, Hopeless Soul helps us screw with the code in Pony Island, and the archivist messes with your computer files is linked. I have to wonder with Grimora in a way though, sure she wants to delete everything, kill everything, all death, but wasn't she ALWAYS death? To her death isn't an end, she pulls those who are dead back up from it and uses their corpses to battle. I almost wonder if she is pretending to be justified in ending everything only because she suspects she can rebirth herself after death like she does her cards. Who for that matter still show the afflictions and scattered thoughts of their pre-death lives. @uwuowo2149 ай бұрын
I always thought of it as breaking rather than ending. Sado wants to pull games and people apart by their seams, breaking them physically and mentally. Hopeless soul wishes to break the seal either holding down himself as a single soul or to break the separation between hell and earth, allowing demons to alter the world above. Grimora wishes to break inscryption's loop of writing upon the slate, clearing it while leaving stains, and yet again writing upon it until the slate no longer appears as it did at the beginning, stains covering every inch of the so called clean slate.

Nothing lore-breaking or important, I just thought it was so funny when I did it. He will scratch out game breaking rules with red paint. I also named my first created card "Lil Toot". How could I not? When I fought Golly, she found a player for my card, and they won with my card! I was really gripped by that when I realized I was actually connecting to another player. You get a card back in return, if memory serves. Honestly unlike Lila and even other Mullins games, I feel like I don't have much to add, philosophically, to this one! I didn't have access to the console ARG and I didn't get much of anywhere with the Karnoffel Code or any deeper secrets. But I enjoyed your thoughts on it, especially of Rebecca. I was thinking she could also be related to Cerberus, and other dogs of the underworld. Dogs and the afterlife really go together, and she "woofs" too much for it to be Floppy, imho. It's been lovely to watch your exploration of the Self evolve over time, from "mind-effy bullshit" to now a really refined and well rounded understanding (and descrybing). I appreciate that you take a philosophical and introspective approach, and that religious themes are not lost on you. Most deep dive channels stick mostly to lore in a very literal way, which can be fun too, but I think you're really able to dig into deeper stuff this way and that's my favourite.

the 5th being Luke is cool because he'd have his own "servants" made up of NPCs that don't belong to a single Scrybe his "searcher" would be the Mycologists since they search for bits of the OLD_DATA by mixing cards. his "Refiner" would be the Wood Carver since she's whittling down -or "refining"- wood pieces. And his "inspector" would be the Bone Lord since he has great knowledge on the OLD_DATA and would thus know what it would look like. I'm probably stretching a bit but I thought it was neat

1:01:45 never seen a ytp style edit as a censor before, very funny and epic, looking forward to watch the rest of this video today as I do my chores 3 hours in, just 2 things I wanted to note down here. - This point you're discussing at 2:57:30 about The Hex and Pony Island not being real games canonically but Inscryption being real in the DMverse and in real life kinda blows my mind and really solidifies that connection of LC as the 5th Scrybe, and just make me feel that DM was probably working towards this level of meta from the start that it bleeds into our world and has actually pulled it off really well from a story perspective - If you made all the music in this video, I just wanna say well done and I really love how you use the same saxophone sample from Who's Lila, it works really well. I think also your skits have consistently improved in every video and I have enjoyed them most in this one, I'm glad that you haven't given up on them and seek to consistently improve them. For some floppiness of my own; your videos and analyses have set themselves apart by promoting creation in the best possible way, as you don't give up at a certain point and give a vague assessment of a work's quality, but always run through with something to the end, while acknowledging that sometimes you could be reaching and that this is your own interpretation/analysis of the work. The way you present this allows the viewers to appreciate new perspectives in the works you're covering (since you do such a fantastic and thorough job with the analyses) and simultaneously inspires them to make their own creations, as you put yourself out there through the videos, whiteboards and skits and challenge yourself to make art inspired by the works you've covered, thus highlighting the creativity of the works you're covering, challenging your own creativity, and inspiring others to make further creations. I hope that one day I can reach the same level of art and positive messaging that you have, well done and thank you! - and yes you should be very proud of that chart at 3:15:07, since I first played this game I felt some connection with the scrybes, the easiest ones being the west/east split and north/south split, and I was making more connections as your act 1 and 2 videos came out (I replayed the game to get all the achievements at this time), however I felt I could never get a complete picture, and it felt hard to get a strong thematic link between P-03 and Magnificus, like there was for the other 2 scrybes. This chart was very satisfying!! Very nice video, I am looking forward to the final shorter video and I hope that you will make sure that your life and health is prioritised as well, based on your skits. In the meantime, thanks for this excellent video!

The Empty Vessel side deck in act 3 may be a subtle religious reference, though I'm not sure why exactly. The phrase 'Empty Vessel' in Christian spirituality refers to one who has achieved an open, empty mind that they may then be filled by the glory of god. It might also be a reference to the Binding of Isaac, which has an item attainable via a deal with the Devil called Empty Vessel, which is itself a reference to a person acting as an empty vessel for a higher entity- in this case the devil rather than god. Apparently Daniel Mullins has referenced the Binding of Isaac before, so it wouldn't be unprecedented.

One question I'm left with is what is Luke's motivation for obtaining the old data/getting power? Grimora wants to delete the game and the old data, Leshy wants people to enjoy his game (I don't remember if this is what his motivation is, but it makes the most sense to me), Magnificus wants to prolong the cycle forever, PO3 just wants complete and total power over it all, but what is Luke's motivation? If I had to guess it'd probably be the the same as PO3's. Idk maybe this was answered and I missed it

I... that deletion scene with Grimora and Leshy... I'm not crying! I--it's just hay fever! ;~;
@kbub12349 ай бұрын
Its great how well characterized the scrybes are, leshy just wanted to keep his game going, p03 was power hungry and wanted to spread everywhere, gaining power, magnificus only had respect for scrybes and luke, players and "main characters", and grimora, who knew more about the nature of the old data, sacrifices everyone to try to delete it... in vain unfortunately, but she believes that sacrifices must be made... she is almost the hero even if she deletes everything at the end
@JesterPrince9 ай бұрын
The act 3 has just been amazing but damn does this have creative and so cruel character deaths. Leshie was a surprise to me, but even in Act 1, form his game alone it was clear he did enjoy the time, even tho it was cruel fate waiting the pc. To him openly just wanting to do thing what he loved most one last time, and to make sure to pat the player's head while at it. The handshakes felt heavy, a goodbye what was almost like being professional about it all. Hell, Luke didn't deserve that. He didn't even have a chance. The games are so beautifully bittersweet. The characters and story are hooking, them showing something deep and real in their final moments of digital life. I'm also latelty really loved media exploring creativity, being artist, having that more closer relationship with the character. I also love your skits, they're a good break and holy hell do you outdo yourself, showing that artistic touch of yourself. And Sado, oh man. That little clown truly has grown big, hasn't she? An wild, Joker card, imo tho I have still hard time grasp is she like a thunder, warning going by before the lighting hits.

So regarding your interpretation of the ending, that really does give new context to him being shot. At face value, it seems like she came specifically to kill him and take back the disk by force. But if he is trying to invoke the kaffol code, then that would mean he is effectively pointing a weapon at her and her shooting him could be seen as self-defense.

Permit me to be a little floppy, but I had a thought, and I had to rewatch this video to confirm. If Sado is either possessing or influencing Luke to explore the Old Data, it paints a very interesting picture of Sado rebelling against Gamefuna. No doubt Gamefuna wants it back for their own purposes, and Sado influencing Luke goes against the wishes of Gamefuna, and by extension Lou Natas. I don't think this is an original thought but this is something I came to naturally watching this video.

I sort of see P03 said as p-03 instead of POE, because I sort of assume the p stands for “part” 03, as he is in the 3rd part of the actual game but also, is the 3rd installment of the Daniel Mullins games, both by release date if you count only the hex and pony island, but also if we consider that the upcoming game from Mullins takes place after the events of pony island, then it would come before this game. Also alluding that this game is part 3 in the timeline

If you make the connection to the apocalypse, I have thought of connecting each scrybe to a horseman of the apocalypse. Grimora being Death, obviously being the scrybe of death and also being the one to ultimately bring about inscryptions end. PO3 being Pestilence/Conquest, spreading to other PCs like a virus or computer virus, or you could say he conquers other PCs? The other two connections are a bit floppier but Leshy being Famine, with how animals constantly face starvation, it being the ultimate reason they have to eat each other (sacrificing) and his use of the starvation card. Magnificus would have to be War, maybe with his unnecessary cruelty?

At 2:05:12 about the two "S" As many symbols within the mentionned regime, it was originally a Norse Rune. In this case, it is "Sowilo", a powerful rune, often linked to the sun, energy, leadership, willpower and winning. It is a rune that can be used in both a positive and negative! For futur reference, the others most known and used runes in this regime are : Algiz (a fork-looking rune) which is Protection in general and Othila (a "fish" looking up) which is inheritance, legacy, property and family. And if I remember correctly, there's also Teiwaz (an upward arrow) which means authority, warrior, balance. If anyone wants to know more about another rune or add some that I forgot about, please tell me!

I did some more thinking about the tarot cards, specifically the Devil, and I belive it could actually represent Kaycees decent into the rabbit hole of the old data. - the upright Devil has meanings of addiction, obsession or forces beyond your control restricting you (which are some themes explored in Kaycees mod) - the outfit the skeleton wears could be a button up shirt, similar to Irvings, most commonly worn in offices with the K on the pocket possibly being where she kept a nametag or company ID - the cracked skull, with the Empress (which directly represents her) only having a small crack which deeper into the skull as Kaycee gets deeper into the rabbit hole But I was also trying make sense of the Deathcards and why they are the way that they are (with some things revealed from Kaycees mod so some stuff could be spoilers) - Louis, a possible alias of Lucifer, the 1 blood (or 1 sacrificed soul) 1/1 with Sprinter and Waterborn seemingly moving in the shadows, causing only small impacts to not leave traces to himself like the devil manipulating someone - Kaycee, our ill fated heroine, the 1 blood 1/2 with Bifurcated Strike and Sharp Quils going around Gamefuna to hide to floppy disk almost as a form retaliation against them - Kaminski, the "carrier", the 1 bone 0/1 with Guardian and Sharp Quils being the one who was responsible for shipping, or "guarding", the floppy disk with the old data to Gamefuna after the demise of Reginald (1 bone) - And Reginald, the Big Ear, the 3 bone 1/3 with Touch of Death who managed to aquire the old data, most likely over the death of many people, where he starts the demise of everyone who will come into contact with it...Luke...Kaycee...himself...and even his grandson Lionel

I really like your take that Sado was secretly tagging along with Amanda and has her own motives separate from her. Amanda's goal is to contain the secret of the Karnoffle code so that only Gameworks can use it, which is the opposite of Sado's usual motive, which is to spread chaos. One of the popular takes in the community is that Sado is either working alongside Amanda under Gameworks or is somehow possessing her, due to Sado's face overlapping with Amanda's. I find these theories to be a bit of a stretch as Sado was literally kept in maximum security jail in Gameworks HQ, so Satan likely already knew about her existence and chose to lock her away. Also, would Sado really settle to be Satan's henchman, or would she try to mess with him like every other person she encounters?

I wonder if the Woodcarver wouldn't have made cards, but the totems from Chapter 1? They were carved wood after all, and were a gameplay mechanic- a kind of inscription, but never having been a capital-S-Scrybe. I wonder if that- being adjacent to power rather than having the ability to fully control the board- is what let her fade into obscurity when she glimpsed the code instead of scrabbling for more and going Karnoffel crazy like the others trying to leverage it. While Item Squirrels can be an insanely powerful tactic, you can't really take over the world with it, y'know?
