I'm 82 now, and this video reminds me so much of my younger days when we too had a small cottage with an acre, chickens, a pony kept in a neighbor's field, a duck & we hand dug a big septic tank ! Phew - many happy years of slog & adventure with 4 kids ! We eventually went back to suburban life for many reasons, but the dream never left me - such a lot of fun but you need plenty of energy. This property is a really wonderful prospect for a young family ! A lucky new owner !

Am sick to death of hearing ignorant, bitter, misinformed, racist boomers spouting their bile and nonsense even in this country, because their own lives haven't turned out the way they hoped and so scapegoat asylum seekers and migrants for their personal failings. @@sharons7617 Very much depends where you live. Walk around certain parts of Dublin and I can see those figures being true, but not where I live in a small town in rural Ireland. I feel very safe, never had a bother walking anywhere here. I also don't walk like a potential victim, I stride with purpose head up. Anyone looking for trouble will look for the easiest targets and that's not me. Especially as I carry a gardening knife for work. Much of England is a kip (would never live there) but that's down to successive Tory government policies making the rich richer and the poor poorer and less educated. There's plenty of second generation migrants living here and they never bother me. Most do very well in school and many better than some white ethnic Irish in fact. This is not England and we haven't had large scale immigration. Far less than people think actually. Largest immigrant population is Polish actually. We're a tolerant and welcoming people, I want it to stay that way. The kind of widespread racism and xenophobia found in England has no place here and far right parties don't get elected - none of them get enough to even get their deposit back so we reject their divisive hateful rhetoric. It's not cheap to renovate these old properties correctly, using the correct materials so that you aren't just creating loads of problems. Any building without a concrete floor would require underpinning to have a concrete foundation poured, definitely not cheap. Cheap land in Ireland is cheap for a reason - either it's not suitable for growing crops on, or it's in a location where there is no infrastructure (like broadband), or the renovations required to bring a house up to habitable standard would cost a few hundred thousand euro. Planning permission in Ireland isn't straightforward either, people qualified in planning are required to submit applications and drawings, and to comply with all the regulations for a valid planning application. I'm Irish and have first hand experience of old houses.

This was a fun alternative to the farm updates. That really is an amazing property! While I don't know a lot about it, I would consider turning an acre or two of woodland into a permaculture food forest.

Awesome idea for future videos. Buying a property similar to this is what I plan to do in the next few years. You are a pleasure to watch.

Came across your channel today and now following with great interest. Off grid/homesteading is where I want to be in 2023 (once current personal project is finished). I have looked at Ireland at its possibilities many times and this video just reinforces what I was already feeling. Great work. Great production. Fantastic insight and content. One very happy viewer who is looking forward to more of the same stuff!

Cindy Im 83 live in aus but born UK. My desire is to own a tiny house but not allowed here. I wonder if councils accept in Ireland. If I could get out of this hell hole I think Id be tempted. Only want to rent as too old in the tooth to buy. I think this young Mossy Bottom lad is great and I admire him so much. This new style blg is a fantastic idea.

@@libbyanderson3752 I’m in the midlands of Ireland. I’ll rent my spare room to you €80 a week, if your nice I’ll do it cheeper. Your never too old for an adventure. You can relax in my wooded garden and plant to your hearts content. We’ve had ducks, chickens, hedgehogs, rabbits, dogs, cats etc. who all shared my garden and I live in the centre of a large town. It’s my little paradise. I’m very lucky.

Loved, loved, loved your analysis of this property. For me, knowing the per acre cost of land in the area without any buildings would be helpful since I viewed the cottage as a complete tear-down. Also, including one more data point would be helpful: distance from Mossy Bottom 😊. Looking forward to more of this new series 👍🏼👌🤗.

As a narrowback, I can tell you Boxtee, or however it is spelled, is the best of Irish dishes. Fired with butter, nothing better.

You're great and that's good. What's bad is advertising cottages like this....which get mostly bought out by people who want second homes, holiday homes, which inadvertently raise the prices of properties. Gentrification in other words. In areas across Ireland it's now difficult for someone to build or buy as prices have escalated beyond means of the average person.

I am sitting out this long long long hard lockdown here in Melbourne, Australia, remembering my life living in a rural nature conservation area for years. Looking at your wonderful new series reminds me so much of the dreams, the reality we experienced. You have thrown 5 years of experience, and thought into this video. What a gift you are making to everyone. I love the gentle unselfish way you approach this. It is so PRACTICAL, so often when people talk the dream they forget to mention all those negatives, and mostly forget to say how many skills you need to acquire and just how much very hard work it is. The other thing people don't talk so much about is how much money you need available to become self sufficient. What a blessing you are.

I love your videos and am interested to see the rest (an Irish guy living in Germany, so this is a taste of home). However the only worry I have here is (and call me pessimistic) that these detailed videos of places to buy could attract the wrong type of buyers to those areas, e.g property developers and people who, rather than live a self-sufficient lifestyle like yourself, would instead buy the land/property and turn them into Tourist rentals/ AirBnBs etc...and change the unique character of the area. What are your thoughts on that?

Daniel I love love all your videos and especially this one exploring old cottages and all it’s land. I wish I was as knowledgeable and gifted as you. My intention is to buy a wee place in Donegal but where as of yet I don’t know. Love how gentle and loving you are to Mossy and all your animals. Thank you for showing my country Ireland
