Um... No? I mean his Indonesian is understandable but saying that it's like native is an exaggeration.
@jjryan1352
@jjryan1352 Жыл бұрын
@@Henry-pm9pe no, it's clear he's been studying it for some time. Even in the first year you will still have what linguistics refers to as "first language interference", meaning people carry over the accents and cadences of their native language into the foreign language. He doesn't have this. He has the right syllable stresses and cadence, which means he sounds a lot like a native.
@Henry-pm9pe
@Henry-pm9pe Жыл бұрын
@@jjryan1352 Are you Indonesian? 'cause I am. I know he's been studying Indonesian and it's good but sorry to say, he still doesn't sound like a native. If I were to rate his Indonesian skill from 1 to 10, with 10 being native, it's probably 7 or 8 -ish.
@jjryan1352
@jjryan1352 Жыл бұрын
@@Henry-pm9pe even your own score is near native. No non-native is going to get a 10. So you disproved yourself. Nobody meant he literally sounded like a real native. 🤦🏻‍♀️ His accent is correct with no mistakes. What he does say he says properly. People who have spoken a foreign language for +5 years often still can't get the accent right.

Ryan went and embraced the culture. Many travelers go to the monuments, the statues, the museums and stuff. That's cool but speaking, dancing, and acting as if your a citizen is beautiful. Being one with the people. Ryan has made my love for languages come back after the passing of the great Moses McCormick aka Laoshu.

Most Indonesia tourism is SFW tho. Drugs are forbidden by law and prostitution/gambling/nightclub are taboo, although you might find some if you looked hard enough. If your idea of having fun is cocaine-fueled orgy then Indonesia is not the place to go. Keep this in mind if you guys want to go to Indonesia.

You should go to the Netherlands also, I mean New York used to be New Amsterdam, still full of Dutch influence, and Indonesia as well. Might as well check out the Netherlands too. This coming from a Dutch guy with partial Indonesian roots. Enjoy Indonesia, I haven't visited for a while because of the Covid situation and other circumstances. I miss the food and vibrant life in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. Try nasi goreng seafood there, it was my go to food. Nasi goreng seafood with cap cay and some satay!! Ok selamat jalan disana, veel plezier daar. Groeten Oh btw, I think this the traveling you're doing now and combining it with your language skills is amazing. Traveling + exploring new foods + using your language skills is a great concept and I think the right step for this channel to grow much further beyond the current 'limits'.

Indonesia is an amazing country to visit for anyone looking to go. Actually staying there is reletively inexpensive with 5 star hotels running you like 15 bucks a night at some places. Though flight costs will be where you find the most trouble. Also you need nerves of steel to last over 24 hours flying there. Goodluck. Some things to be aware of though before going is that toilets are often just holes in the ground though most hotels have western designs. Also the street food is something that you kind of have to build up an immunity too overtime or it can make you sick. Also when it comes to admission to sites or even like resteraunt prices, you really should be able to speak the language, because if they know you are an ignorant tourist, you will be scammed. They will upcharge you if they think they can get away with it. Also a lot of restrooms aren't free in certain places, though it's also not that expensive. And I think it is a given since it's the 4th most populous country in the world, but the cities are extremely crowded and many of them are quite filthy as well. So most of your site seeing is a lot of natural beauty as well as ancient sites and nationally designated historical sites. But a lot of the cities are very crowded. Also don't even try to drive, the roads are basically a battleground of who can get through first. Let people expierenced drive you. Also expect some things to be spicy. Like Indonesian chicken isn't always spicy, but if you go to a KFC, it'll be spicy and their will be rice with it. Also as fun as going to a zoo may sound, a lot of zoos in Indonesia are privately owned and their owners often times don't take very good care of them. I Know there are some places where the animals are probably taken care of well. But mainly avoid Bandung and Surabaya, they've garnered the reputation of "death zoos". Also even though Islam is the biggest religion, it's pretty lax for most people. I've always said it like this "Indonesia is a muslim country in the sense that America is a christian country." The majority are followers of that particular faith though they follow it at varying degrees, with their own cultural beliefs added on. When Islam came to Indonesia, it was more like a spice or a special sauce people put on top of their already existing meals. And to add to that, not everywhere is Islamic. Bali is still very much a hindu province, and a lot of the smaller islands are predominately Christian. Also maybe take the oppurtunity if you are into stuff like anime and pop culture, to looking into buying that stuff there. Due to inflation and prices and all that jazz, products in Indonesia are just flat out cheaper when converting IDR back to USD. Like 1 USD equals 15,000 Rupiah. But for us a soda may be 1 dollar, and to them it may only be like 3,000-5,000 Rupiah. So the USD holds a lot of value abroad.
@TKDragon75
@TKDragon75 Жыл бұрын
Also you'll end up eating a lot of food with your hands because a lot of things we in the US eat with utensils they just don't feel the need to use. Using my hands for stuff like rice has gotten me strange looks around here because I kinda just picked up the habit from my dad. I eat a lot of things by hand.
